The biggest attraction is the 300-square mile Shenandoah National Park, located in the northern half of the Valley, just east of I-81. The Park received approximately 1.17 million visitors in 2003 (for reference, Grand Canyon National Park received 4.12 million visitors; the Lincoln Memorial 3.27 million visitors; and Everglades National Park received 1.04 million visitors). Staunton boasts a thriving art and music scene, access to some of the best outdoor recreation on the East Coast, and one of the most authentic farm-to-table culinary experiences in Virginia. 8 Staunton began as a waypoint and trade center for early American travelers moving along the Great Wagon Road and routes west from Richmond. Its location at two important road intersections is still one of the city s strongest assets. Two U.S. Highways (Routes 11 and 250) intersect in downtown Staunton, and two U.S. Interstates (I-64 and I-81) intersect just outside the city limits. Staunton is considered a transportation hub as it offers advanced access to rail, highway and air. Staunton s ground transportation network includes major highways like Interstate 81, Interstate 64, Route 250 and Route 11. A full host of freight logistic companies also service the area. With Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport being just 20 minutes away, there is commercial air service with United. Charlottesville Albemarle Airport, a 45-minute drive from Staunton, offers service with US Airways, United, Delta, and American Airlines. Air service is also provided by Dulles International Airport (2.5 hours), as well as Richmond and Roanoke (1.5 hours). Downtown Staunton is served by Amtrak lines including The Cardinal line (New York Washington, DC Cincinnati Indianapolis Chicago) and The Crescent line (New York Atlanta New Orleans.). These visitors are attracted by recreational opportunities in the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains, the rich Civil War history, and the numerous attractions in the 13 counties and numerous cities and towns located along the corridor. Staunton is served by Junctions 220, 221 & 222.
