MRS. JOAN GUTHRIE, M.B.E STATE Commissioner 'THE CHALLENGING SIXTIES' Published in Girl Guides Association (Queensland, Australia). All rights reserved. Researched by Miss Margaret Sycamore. Compiled by Mrs. Nola Warneke. Final typing - Headquarters. Since 1990, some terms have been altered - District Commissioners are now 'District Leaders'. Local Associations are now 'Girl Guides Support Groups'. MRS. JOAN GUTHRIE, M.B.E 'THE CHALLENGING SIXTIES' SPECIAL OCCASIONS. Mrs.M.O. Guthrie came into office as State Commissioner at the beginning of 1966, with Mrs. G. Hamlyn-Harris and Miss A. Shaw as Assistant State Commissioners. During Mrs. Guthrie's term of office, many activities were enjoyed on an annual basis - the presentation of Queen's Guide Certificates at Government House, Commonwealth Youth Week, Guide Week and the Guiders' Dinner. Our representatives attended meetings of many organisations, for example Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women's Association, A.Y.C., Good Neighbour Council, National Council of Women, Boy Scout Religious Advisory Panel, Wild Life Preservation Society, T.V. and Film Board, Commonwealth Youth Week Committee and United Nations Committee. There were numerous Guide and Scout activities - camps, hikes, square dances, social events and especially service projects. In 1970 Ranger Guides were invited to take part in the Gang Show for the first time. The Local Associations of the State continued to provide valuable support. Two very successful State Local Association Conferences were held during Mrs. Guthrie's term. Apart from the annual events, many exciting things happened each year The outstanding feature of this year was the happiness and joy of our Jubilee Celebrations to mark fifty years of Guiding in Queensland. (It was in 1915 in Queensland that a small group of girls banded together and persuaded Miss Marjorie Grimes to become their Leader. They designed their own uniforms and were enrolled as GIRL ScoutS by Scoutmaster A. Cribb of Ipswich. However, on discovering that under the rules of the Movement, it was impossible to acquire Guide certificates and badges, unless a central committee of representatives was formed, the decision was made to put the troop into recess until the Movement was officially initiated in Brisbane. On 15th November 1919 at Government House, Brisbane, in the presence of Lady Goold-Adams, a number of representative citizens assembled for the purpose of forming a committee to establish the Girl Guide Movement in Brisbane. Miss Marjorie Grimes then became Captain of the first Girl Guide Company, the 1st Tarragindi Company.) 1965 culminated in the Jubilee Dinner attended by Lady May Abel Smith and many Guiders and Commissioners from Brisbane and country areas. It was the occasion for our farewell to Mrs. C.A. Burcher, and gave an opportunity to express deep appreciation for all that she had done for Guiding during her term as State Commissioner. Mrs. Burcher was congratulated on the honour conferred by Her Majesty in the awarding of the Member of the British Empire, for her many years of devoted service to Guiding. To mark our Jubilee, Jubilee Awards were presented by Lady May to many faithful members of the Association. Thinking Day was celebrated in Divisions, in many cases in conjunction with the Scouts and Cubs. The Thinking Day Fund amounted to $ and was sent to the World Bureau to further Guiding in many parts of the world not as fortunately placed as Australia. Our Australian Chief Commissioner, Mrs. M.A. Buntine, M.B.E., visited Queensland on her way home from Papua New Guinea. She attended a Rally in Cairns and a Local Association gathering on the Atherton Tableland before

flying to Brisbane to be guest speaker at our forty-fifth Annual Meeting. Scouts and Guides farewelled Sir Henry and Lady May Abel Smith at a Rally at the Exhibition Grounds on 5th March The May fair, a combined effort organised by the State Council and the Local Associations as a Jubilee gesture, was held in New Farm Park and opened by the Lady Mayoress, Mrs. Clem Jones. It realised a net profit of $1428 for Association funds. Her Excellency, Lady Casey was appointed Australian President. A Guide Shop was opened in Toowoomba, housed in the Guide Hut moved from Margaret Street to the Civic Centre. Warana Festivals were held in some cities and country towns of Queensland, and the Girl Guides Association helped wherever possible. Members of the Senior Branch and Queen's Guides in conjunction with the Senior Scouts were asked to be colour bearers at the flag raising ceremony in the Botanical Gardens for the official opening of Warana. Five hundred Guides marched with our float in the Warana Procession. They also participated at the Festival of Thanksgiving and took part in the tableaux, Brownie Guides and Guides forming the Guide badge in honour of our Jubilee Lady Mansfield was welcomed as our new State President. Three delegates and two observers attended the Australian Council meeting held in Adelaide in 1966 prior to the World Conference, which was held in Tokyo. Following the World Conference, Lady Baden-Powell, together with many of the delegates including Mrs. Buntine, travelled to India for the official opening of the World Centre, Sangam. It was decided to take a long, hard look at all aspects of Guiding in Australia in the light of then present-day needs. This followed trends in other countries and the decision was made to set up State 'Work Parties', with an Australian Co-ordinating Committee. It was unanimously agreed that the principles as set down by the Founder, Lord Baden- Powell, had stood the test of time and would not be changed. The Guide Revue was held on two nights at the Rialto Theatre in May. This was a new venture for the Association and the bright and attractive show demonstrated what a wealth of talent we had within the Movement and gave valuable training to all who participated As part of her extensive tour of Australia arranged jointly with the Boy Scout Association, the visit of the World Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell, to Queensland brought great joy to all sections. She officially opened the All Australia 'Camp Kumanka' held at Kindilan for 600 Guides from all States of Australia and from Papua New Guinea. The adoption of campsites by Divisions helped the Kindilan Committee in clearing and preparing the area for camp. Rangers, Rovers and Guide Patrol Leaders enjoyed an informal gathering organised by Miss Shirley Granlund for Lady Baden-Powell at Riverside Ballroorn. The Chief, as well as delivering an inspiring address, taught a song with much gusto A great deal of time was given to studying the trends in Youth Leadership as it affects our Movement, and reassessing our program. With the planned move into the new Eight Point Programme in the latter part of 1969, the main aim was to help both Guiders and Commissioners to become geared for its implementation. At the Executive Meeting held in Sydney in August 1968, State Commissioners from all States and Papua New

Guinea farewelled Mrs. M.A. Buntine, O.B.E., on her retirement from office as Chief Commissioner of Australia. Mrs.Buntine handed over the badge of office and the Chief Commissioner's Standard to Mrs. J.R. Price, O.B.E., M.Sc., who was offered warmest good wishes for a very happy and rewarding term. Mrs.Price has had a long experience in Guiding and had represented Australia as Leader of the Delegation to the World Conference in Japan and at the Asian Region Conference at Sangam, India. To celebrate the 80th birthday of the World Chief Guide, early morning Thinking Day gatherings were held. Reports were received from all parts of Queensland of the success of this idea - from the metropolitan area where 3,000 members met on the riverbank at New Farm Park at 6.30am, for a most colourful ceremony, to where Guides and Brownies gathered on the summit of Castle Hill, Townsville. One District gave a layette to the first baby born on 22nd February and members visited mother and baby in hospital. The Chief Guide expressed the birthday wish that every member should add another new member that year, and this challenge had already been taken up in many countries The year 1970 marked the Diamond Jubilee of the Girl Guides Association, sixty years since Lord Baden-Powell started the Movement. An Act of Incorporation was granted to the Association by the Queensland Government in March, 1970 and tributes were paid by members of both sides of the House to the work done over the past 50 years for the girls of Queensland. At the Australian Council meeting held in Brisbane in April 1969, delegations were welcomed from all States and Papua New Guinea. The Australian Chief Commissioner, Mrs. J.R. Price, O.B.E., made her first official visit to Queensland. It was at this meeting that the delegation to attend the World Conference of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in Helsinki, Finland, was briefed. Mrs. G. Hamlyn-Harris, Assistant State Commissioner, was a member of the Australian Delegation and when she returned, she passed on the impressions and enthusiasm gained from this most important gathering. One decision reached was the inclusion of Australia in an Asian Region within the World Association. This was for a three year trial basis and would bring Australia into even closer touch with our Asian neighbours. In May 1969, the Commissioners' Residential Training and State Division Commissioners' Meeting were held at the Townsville University. This was an outstanding success and well attended. A very big change was the introduction of the new Eight Point Programme. This was officially launched on 'Implementation Day', 23rd September 1969, with the simultaneous distribution of handbooks throughout Australia. Brownies, Guides and Rangers received their handbooks by boat, train, plane, fire engine, ice cream carts and even from sky-divers. They were presented at Government House and other venues and occasions such as candle-light ceremonies, rallies, and churches to make this a memorable event for all members of the Movement. Preparations for the launching of the new program were spread over a period of two years. Badge changes and adaptations in the various sections kept Advisers very busy, not only within the State but in co-operation with the newly-appointed Australian Section Advisers. The fact that the transition to the new program was completed so smoothly was a tribute to all those who took part in what, for us, was a major change of outlook. The Girl Guides Association of Australia initiated a scheme to promote Guiding in towns in the outback areas which were springing up round mining and other developments, and also in remote towns which States had difficulty in helping because of limited finance. Meetings took place between Scout and Guide Commissioners at State level to map out the best way for Scout/Guide co-operation to be carried out. Reports from almost all Divisions showed that there was very close liaison between the two Movements and that activities such as hikes, square-dances, social events and especially service projects were proving very successful. Ranger section were invited to take part in the 1970 Gang Show for the first time. Rover/Ranger co-operation continued and resulted in several weddings. Mrs. V. Dempsey and Mrs. P. Meikle gained the Guiders' Bushcraft Badge. Mrs. Dempsey also gained the B.-P. Badge.

The visit in 1970 of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Patron of our Association, and herself a former Guide, was an especial joy to us. We were represented at both Civic and State functions, not only in Brisbane but also in towns throughout the State, and many Guides travelled great distances to greet the Queen was also the bicentenary of the landing of Captain Cook in Australia and Guides joined in celebrations in many towns throughout the State, and took a prominent part in the Thanksgiving Service at the Exhibition Grounds in Brisbane. SERVICE TO THE Community Anti-Litter Campaigns were well supported. Many litter bags were distributed by members, and the sight of large numbers of uniformed personnel busily engaged in cleaning up parks, etc. must have given the public greater awareness of the need for more care in disposing of litter. Added to this was the planting of trees and shrubs to make our surroundings more attractive. 1965/66 Good turns - a few typical examples were : support to many church and charitable organisations, help to the Red Cross Blood Bank, collections of medicine bottles for a hospital, upkeep for Korean orphans, making feeders for a group of sub-normal children, planting trees in a Tourist Rest Centre, painting outdoor furniture for a kindergarten and cleaning the yard for an Aged People's Home. A Brownie Pack had a "little brothers and sisters" afternoon to give their mothers a rest, and the Local Association organised a "Learn to Swim" drive. Service given by the Senior branch included Bring and Buy for United Nations, Afghan rug-making for church missions of all creeds, Mothers' and Fathers' Day gifts for parents and aged folk in Homes, tray covers and other gifts for Old People's Homes, Blood Bank assistance, a second-hand bookstall for hospital funds, helping a Y.M.C.A. Old People's party, a T.P.I, party, organising games for Bush Children's Health Scheme Homes, continuing service every Saturday afternoon at the local Hospital, fortnightly reading and answering correspondence for a blind lady, alfoil and stamp collecting, making charts and booklets for Lone Guides, manning Cheerio Stall at Brisbane Exhibition, and the Cadets held a Girl Guide House yard cleaning session. The Jubilee Good Turn amounted to $1, at 31st March 1966 and amounts were still coming in. It was a contribution to the Cunnamulla Natives Welfare Association to provide and equip a house for an aboriginal family where they would learn to care for a house of their own. It was to be a far-reaching scheme - for as one family was declared ready to move into their own house, another family was to be chosen and they were to take over the Guide house for a maximum period of four years until they too were trained and moved on. 1966/67 During the year the following have been helped not by giving money in most cases but by actual effort in collecting clothing, blankets, toys, magazines, or making a variety of items for use : O.P.A.L., Save the Children Fund, Hong Kong Flood Appeal, Korean Missions, Meals on Wheels, International Refugees, Milk for India, Salvation Army, Braille House, St.Vincent de Paul, Enoggera Boys' Home, Tufnell Home, Sub-Normal Children's Association, British and Foreign Bible Society, Seeing-eye Dog, Aboriginal Missions, Red Cross, UNICEF, New Guinea Missions, Senior Citizen's Clubs, Cripp.led Children's Homes, Brisbane City Missions and Hospitals. Donations were sent for the support of Korean, Moroccan, Tibetan and Indian orphans. Many Companies and Packs gave books, clothing, and bandages for refugees in Vietnam. A group of Rangers travelled to New Guinea at their own expense and worked for a week at a Crippled Children's Home. Service in their own community was given by participating in the Anti-Litter Drive and by such efforts as clearing beaches of broken bottles, clearing up around schools, cleaning the local War Memorial (an annual effort), polishing the Council Chamber walls, covering church hymnbooks with plastic, picking a crop of navy beans and donating the proceeds to Meals on Wheels, giving night-dresses to two patients who had lost their belongings in a Hospital fire and donating fifteen vases to the Maternity Section, giving a bus seat, washing the Blue Nursing Service's cars each week, child minding at hospitals, just some of the good turns gleaned from Division Reports.

1967/68 Guides, Guiders and Rangers under the Leadership of Mrs. E. Heymer staffed the hospital and worked as secretaries and telephonists at the Boy Scout Jamboree in Brisbane in January Despite the intense heat, the girls did everything that was asked of them cheerfully, and earned the admiration and gratitude of the organisers of the Jamboree. Typical service projects carried out by Ranger Branch were collecting and washing bottles for hospitals, making Christmas decorations for the Meals on Wheels Christmas dinner trays, cleaning and painting at the Sheltered Workshops for Paraplegics. A combined Service Project was for Kuni Babies. A request was received for Rangers to help a priest in Papua who was trying to bring members of the Kuni tribe together to live in villages instead of in scattered family groups, to raise their standard of living and help the babies who often suffered from exposure and malnutrition. The Ranger Branch adopted this tribe, forwarding babies' clothes, soap, etc. and the priest distributed a parcel of clothing for each newborn baby. A healthy bank balance was built up so that powdered milk, cod liver oil, baby foods, waterproof capes, etc. could be forwarded to the Kuni people. The response from the Rangers was wonderful, and many Brownie Packs and Guide Companies also contibuted. Examples of service from Lone Section - soap and toilet bags sent to Red Cross for Asian children, dolls' clothes for Homes, assistance with Meals on Wheels, knitting jumpers for Homes, puppets for children at Mission Station, help at hospital, collecting stamps for Extensions, toys and dressing dolls for under-privileged children. 1968/69 The two years 'Kuni Babies Project' was completed. The tribe was learning to help itself. The Rover and Ranger Council Service Project for 1968 was to supply and deliver Christmas hampers to families of prisoners on behalf of the Prisoners' Aid Society. Lone Brownie Good Turns included saving used stamps for abandoned Chilian children and for work in New Guinea. One Pack made Christmas baby bibs for an orphanage. Lone Guides collected used stamps, made dolls' clothes for a mission, collected and distributed magazines to a local hospital, made donations to the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, made a compass game for a Brownie Pack, special regular farm jobs and a continuing service where a Guide has been doing all the housework for her grandmother for over three years. 1969/70 Australia adopted the suggestion made at the World Conference in Finland that our service project for three years would be "Conservation". The State Jubilee Good Turn was to support the Autistic Children's Association. At the beginning of December 1970 the Christmas Story was given full voice by Brownies, Guides and Rangers who took part in the Girl Guides' Carol Service and Nativity Scene at St.John's Cathedral. The Dean of Brisbane. Bishop C. Muschamp, read the story accompanying the nativity scene before an audience of 600 people. The State Commissioner presented a cheque for $3800 to a representative of the Autistic Children's Association in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of World Guiding. Reports from Divisions indicated the enormous amount of worthwhile service projects carried out. These included practical help to Aged People's Homes, Hospitals, Children's Homes and work for the handicapped as well as civic service in keeping parks and beaches free of glass and litter and the planting of shade trees. Help was also given to projects in other countries and Companies and Packs continued to support children in underprivileged countries through the Save the Children Fund. SERVICE TO THE ASSOCIATION Willing Shilling. This effort was the children's contribution to Guide funds. They did small jobs locally to raise money for their own areas, Divisions and Headquarters. When decimal currency was introduced in 1966, the name of this service to the Association was changed to "Cents for Service".

The Biscuit Drive was another annual way the girls helped raise money for the Association. Exhibition Stalls. There was a tremendous and concerted effort from the convenors and willing helpers who manned the two stalls annually in Show Week. In consecutive years commencing 1965 helpers raised $1400, $1400, $1056, $1300 and $1000 profit. Improvements were made to the Snack Bar and Cheerio Stall as required by the Health Department. A bus for the use of 'Guides' in Afghanistan was presented by the Girl Guides of Australia in Members also contributed generously to the "hands across the sea" fund which brought Guides from overseas countries to 'Camp Southern Cross' in Victoria in Rangers worked as orderlies at State Trainings, Guide camps, etc. TRAINING All aspects of Guider training continued to expand. The gift of a training van by Mr.C.Hughes, M.L.A., was much appreciated. It was really tested in country areas and proved a great success. State Secretary, Miss M. Munckton, resigned to take up a training position and was in charge of the bus. An extra Trainer in the field, able to carry equipment and shop goods proved a great boon to the Guiders and Commissioners in the far outback areas of the State. Campcraft trainings were held at Headquarters and were also included in state trainings at Kindilan and Bluewater. The Association assisted twelve Brownie Guiders to be present at the All Australia Brownie Guiders' Conference in South Australia ( ). Advisers and diploma'd trainers attended the Australian Training Conference in Victoria in 1966 and in Perth in January Regular Commissioner trainings were held for metropolitan and near-metropolitan Commissioners. Correspondence training was used for Commissioners in isolated areas. A residential Commissioner training was held at Cool Waters, Yeppoon (near Rockhampton), and was the first held outside the metropolitan area for a number of years. The State Court of Honour was also held during the week. A special belt badge was issued to participants to mark this occasion. State trainings were held at Bluewater and Kindilan. A Commissioner Training Certificate was introduced ( ). April, 1965 and 'Kindimindi', a camp for Patrol Leaders and Guiders held at St.Ives, near Sydney, was attended by representatives from Queensland. Under the Leadership of Mrs. E. Grigg, Assistant Training Adviser, the Diploma'd Trainers and Branch Advisers launched a new three year training plan. 1966/67 This year was a particularly busy and interesting year. There was a marked increase in membership together with a heightened awareness of the need among Commissioners and Guiders for Leadership Training. The work of the State Training Adviser, Mrs. R.S. Moore, and the State Training Council brought training within the reach of every Guider in the State. It was a tribute to many women in the drought-stricken parts of the State that they continued to give both time and effort to Guiding. The floods in North Queensland had also taken their toll in possessions and property. Queensland was delighted to act as the hostess State for the Australian Extension (handicapped) Guiders' Conference Training which was officially opened by His Excellency, the Governor, Sir Alan Mansfield in May 1966 at Kindilan. We welcomed Guiders who worked with the handicapped from all States of Australia and from Canada, India and New Zealand. The result of the week-long discussions and training showed that the handicapped

girl was able to derive great benefit from Guiding and that she in turn could give a great deal to our Movement. The State Aboriginal and Island Affairs Department approached our Association with a proposal to extend Guiding to the Torres Strait Islands. We undertook the training as Guide and Brownie Leaders of students, sent to Brisbane to train as teachers and child welfare workers. It was to be a concentrated plan of training, hoping that in twelve months they would be trained sufficiently to allow them to open Units on their return to their various Islands. A training for trainers was held at Glengarry, N.S.W., in January /68 The State Government recognised the need for Youth Leadership Training by making a grant available for groups with an established Leadership training program. The State Executive sent a team of four Diploma'd Trainers, Assessor, Ranger Adviser and State Training Adviser to the Australian Training Conference in Perth during January The agenda was Packed with training items and necessary changes in syllabi and training methods in preparation for the introduction of 'Tomorrow's Guide' as it would apply to Australia. The Guide Adviser (Mrs.R.G.Williams) and the Brownie Adviser (Mrs.F.Axten) arranged for the training of seven girls who had been brought to Brisbane by the Aboriginal and Island Affairs Department. These Guiders opened Companies and Packs in their own Islands. 1968/69 Mrs. Hamlyn-Harris, three Division Commissioners and the State Training Adviser attended the Australian Commissioners' Training in Adelaide in August Mrs. D. Frost, who gained a Queensland Experimental Pack Holiday Training Certificate, travelled through parts of the State to help warranted Brownie Guiders wishing to gain their Pack Holiday Permit. Division Commissioners, trainers and Training Council members were present at a Training Conference weekend in September 1968, when new handbooks and programmes were discussed and trainings given on the Eight Point Programme. During January 1969, for the first time a Guiders' Campcraft Training was held. This was at Mt.Nebo on private property and proved very successful. At the Training, Miss Margaret Hale gained her Campcraft Diploma. Eleven country Guiders, who were assisted financially to attend this camp, reached the Permit standard in Camping. 1969/70 The preparation for the launching of the new program was spread over a period of two years and involved a great deal of planning on the part of both Trainers and Commissioners under the Leadership of the State Training Adviser, Mrs. R.S. Moore. Badge changes and adaptations in the various sections kept Advisers very busy, not only with the State, but in co-operation with the newly appointed Australian Section Advisers. Under the Leadership of the State Section Director, Mrs. L. Manning, advisers smoothly ushered the Guiders and children into the new syllabus. With the move into Regions within the State, the Training Council's calendar revolved around Area Leadership Trainings. Those already held showed that many more Guiders and Commissioners would be reached and as a result the establishment of Regional Training Teams was on the horizon. Miss Pat Kelman travelled country Districts for six months, training and helping develop new areas. Miss Audrey Lawrie was appointed to the Australian Training Committee. TRAINING QUALIFICATIONS 1967/68, 1968/69, 1969/70 Guide Diploma - Miss A. Lawrie. Brownie Training Certificates - Mrs. J. Nelson-Grade, Mrs.P.Dwyer, Mrs.B.Roberts. Campcraft trainings were held at Headquarters with Leaders gaining more practical training at camps at Kindilan and Bluewater. 1965/66 In August 1965, a Jubilee Bushcraft Camp was held at Kindilan, with 144 Guides in attendance, who were tested for Camper, Pioneer and Hiker Badges. Three Guiders and fifteen Guides travelled interstate to Camp Kindimindi, a Patrol Leaders' Friendship Camp at St.Ives, N.S.W., and two Guiders went to the Guiders' Friendship Camp held concurrently. Miss M. Langdon was awarded a Campcraft Training Certificate. 1966/67 A bushcraft camp was held at Bluewater for Guides of North Queensland. Testing was for Camp Tenderfoot, Camper, Pioneer and Hiker Badges and a total of 64 badges were gained. Camp Advisers in many Districts were able to arrange Camper Badge trainings, followed by a Testing Camp, and these were very popular with the Guides. Campcraft trainings for Guiders were included in the State Trainings held at Bluewater in May and Kindilan in August. Advanced trainings were given at Guide Headquarters in September and metropolitan Guiders were tested for sections of their permits, tenting, screening, etc. at two Guide Hut grounds in June. As Miss M. Hale, our Travelling Trainer, moved about the State, she was able to test country Guiders working towards Camp Permit. With ten more sites cleared at Kindilan, each with water laid on, there was a splendid opportunity for camping in pleasant surroundings, with ample scope for bushcraft activities. Campsites were being developed in country Divisions and suitable places for Pack Holidays were being 'discovered'. Queensland Guides visited New Zealand for a Heritage Camp and Adventure Trail. 1967/68 Camp Kumanka at Kindilan in May 1967 was opened by Lady Baden-Powell, who stayed for dinner and a campfire. A successful bushcraft camp was held for Guides from areas remote from Camp Advisers and Bushcraft Badge testers. A special day was held in July for testing of the Camp Permit at Chermside and East Brisbane Guide Huts. Campcraft trainings were included in the May Bluewater training week, and a weekend of training was given in August, while general trainings were being held at Kindilan. Approximately eighty Guides, Guiders and Rangers were on the staff of the Scout Jamboree held at Jindalee in

January 1968, helping in various capacities but mainly as Nursing Aides. 1968/69 Many Districts availed themselves of the opportunity to purchase tents at greatly reduced prices from the Boy Scouts Association at the conclusion of the Jamboree. A special drive by the Camping Department during the year to increase the number of Camp Permits and Licences was reflected in the reports of many more camps held. More and more children were having the thrill of living together under canvas and taking part in the exciting activities of camping. Brownie Guiders who qualify for the Pack Holiday Permit have been rewarded by the joy that Brownie Guides have in living and working together Guides and 28 Extension Guides have camped, mainly under canvas, and 883 Brownie Guides have attended Pack Holidays. A series of Campcraft Trainings were held at Headquarters, and in May a camp for Guiders without qualifications was held at Kindilan. Bushcraft camps were held at Bluewater and Kindilan during the August holidays. 1969/70 A survey held this year showed that camping was still the most popular activity in the Guide Program. Camp records showed that 3,110 Guides camped during the year and 340 Brownie Guides attended Pack Holidays. This figure included 92 Guides who travelled by plane to attend the International 'Camp Southern Cross' and 7 Extension Guides also attended Camp Endeavour held at the same time in Victoria. Mrs. M. Frost was the Trainer-in-charge of a Pack Holiday weekend training, which seventeen trainees attended in April A series of campcraft trainings was held in April 1970, also a special meeting of all metropolitan bushcraft testers to discuss standards and methods. Camps for 'Guiders without qualifications' supervised by trainers were arranged in June, and eleven adult Leaders availed themselves of this opportunity. Later in the month the Leaders and their staff attended an evaluation meeting. A campcraft testing day was held in July for metropolitan adult Leaders. In August over 400 Guides took part in the Jubilee Patrol Camp Project. These Patrol Camps were supervised by Trainers, young Guiders and experienced Ranger Guides. Between August and November other Patrols participated in Patrol practice camps throughout Queensland as part of the same project. As a result there was a great upsurge in the number of Patrol Camp Permits gained. Miss Z. Stormonth conducted a series of trainings for potential Campfire Leaders in September. In October, campcraft trainers and Guiders took part in the Guide/campcraft training held at Kindilan. Camping qualifications gained : / / / / /70 Camper Licence 3 Guider Camp Permit 12 Pack Holiday Permit 6

Mrs. Larsen, a Commissioner and former Brownie Guider from Canada, enthused our Guiders with many ideas for fun and imagination in the Pack, at well-attended training sessions. Training sessions in the metropolitan area have been well attended. Earlier in the year training was given in Carpentaria, Condamine and South West Divisions. Twelve Guiders attended the Brownie Guiders' Conference in Adelaide during April. They found the Conference very stimulating and have passed on their experience to Guiders in their Divisions and to others at Headquarters training sessions. This year six Guiders gained Pack Holiday Permits. Alterations in the Pack Holiday Permit requirements made it possible for more country Guiders to obtain Permits and so many more Brownie Guides should enjoy the fun of a Pack Holiday. 1966/67 The number of enrolled Brownies increased by over 700. Mrs.Kibblewhite became Queensland's first Lone Brownie Guider. Miss Gwen Abraham retired as Assistant Brownie Adviser for the North at the end of 1966 and Miss A.Fredericks accepted the position. 1967/68 Mesdames J.Nelson-Grade, P.Dwyer and B.Roberts gained Brownie Training Certificates. 1968/69 Brownie Branch continued to progress and several new Packs were opened. The training team had the added strength of Mrs.J.Dalliston, Warwick and Mrs.D.Wendt, Landsborough. They worked towards and were presented with their Warrant Training Bar. The Training Bar was a new innovation and it was hoped it would prove helpful when the new program would be implemented later in the year. Interest strengthened in Pack Holidays partly due to the Pack Holiday Training weekend and the untiring efforts of Mrs.D.Frost of Ipswich. Mrs.Frost, who gained a Queensland Experimental Pack Holiday Training Certificate, travelled through parts of the State to help warranted Brownie Guiders towards Pack Holiday Permits. This was undertaken in consultation with the Camping Department. At Kindilan a new Brownie Cottage larger than the previous one was moved on to the site and when alterations were completed it housed 18 Brownie Guides and staff. 1969/70 There was an increase in the number of Brownie Guiders qualifying to take charge of Pack holidays. Brownie Guides enjoyed a wide variety of activities - both individually, as indicated by the number of Journey and Interest badges earned, and as Units in the form of Pack Ventures and Good Turns. Brownie Revels were conducted in many Divisions providing the opportunities for making new friends and for widening the Brownie Guides' concept

of the Movement. Guide BRANCH From many changes to the program were made. The high standard of First Class testing was maintained, but experiments were carried out to provide more varied, relaxed and interesting tests. A very big change was the introduction of the Eight Point Programme on 23rd September Many girls gained their Queen's Guide Badges : 1965/ / /68 38 (presented at Government House) 3 (at Cairns) 1968/69 45 (36 at Government House) 1969/ /67 Ninety-one Guide Guider Warrants were issued. Forty-four Queen's Guide Badges were issued and 84 First Class Badges - of the latter, seven were issued to Guiders. At Government House in April 1966, Sir Alan Mansfield presented Queen's Guide Certificates to 34 of our Queen's Guides and three other Queen's Guides received theirs within their Divisions. A successful State Patrol Leaders' Conference was held in August. 1967/68 Guides and Guiders took part in the airport welcome to Lady Baden-Powell in May 1967, and many were present at Kindilan when Lady Baden-Powell officially opened 'Camp Kumanka'. Mrs.G.Sloane capably directed and trained Guides for the Guide item "The Fire Bird", which was part of the Festival Hall welcome. Guides were also included in the choir. Patrol Leaders thoroughly enjoyed entertaining Lady Baden-Powell at Riverside Ballroom. A Guide Guiders' seminar held in July aroused interest and was well attended. The theme was 'Our greatest limitations are those we set up in our own minds'. On that occasion Mr. Haydn Sargent was guest speaker. During August a Creative Arts Camp for ninety girls took place at Kindilan. Qualified instructors from without as well as within the Movement graciously gave of their time and talents to interest the girls in drama, music, folkdancing, sketching, painting, clay modelling, stencilling on fabric, bark pictures, mapping, adventurous cooking and knotting. A news-sheet, 'Guide Talk' (especially for Guides), was distributed one to each Company by our Guide Branch as a trial edition. 1968/69 Guides represented the Association when they took part in a Guard of Honour at Parliament House during the opening of 'Youth Parliament' and Guides marched in the Warana procession. In the glorious setting at Kindilan, ninety Guides had a memorable time experimenting with activities of their choice, during the 1968 Creative Arts Camp. Sketching from nature, painting, creative embroidery, totem-pole decorating, clay modelling, puppetry, making backdrops, producing creative cooking and adventurous knotting, bark picture making, drama and campfire were some of the activities enjoyed by the girls. On the last day the girls were encouraged to set up a display of their handwork. Five Guiders and seventy-five Guides completed their First Class test and forty-one Queen's Guide Badges were awarded. Two Queen's Guide certificate presentations were held at Government House - thirty-eight were presented by Lady Mansfield in April 1968 and thirty-six on 9th March Three girls received their certificates in their own Divisions. A meeting of Commonwealth Knowledge badge testers was held in April. The Guide Branch committee members accepted with regret the resignations of Mrs. N.G. Kidd and Mrs. G.W.

Bagster, both experienced First Class testers. Mrs.Bagster was also a Creative Arts Committee Chairman and members were delighted when she received the award of the Oak Leaf prior to her departure for Victoria. The Creative Arts camps were introduced to Queensland at State level by the Guide Adviser and her committee. In January, Mrs. R.G. Williams resigned as State Guide Adviser to take up her new appointment as State Camping Adviser. A well-deserved award of the Red Kangaroo was presented to Mrs.Williams at the Annual Guiders' and Commissioners' Dinner. 1969/ saw the first complete year of participation in the Eight Point Programme which proved to be very successful with Guides in all parts of the State taking part in many new activities. Patrol Leaders from all over the State attended Conferences and Trainings at Kindilan and Bluewater and others not able to be present answered questionnaires following discussions on the new program with the patrols. The overall reaction to the Eight Point Programme was one of acceptance and enthusiasm, both by the Guides and their Leaders. The visit of Her Majesty, the Queen, to Brisbane during the bicentenary celebrations in 1970 saw six of our Queen's Guides giving excellent service acting as ushers at the City Hall. Creative arts was a very popular part of the Guide Program and it received extra emphasis in 1970 when many workshops were held in country centres as well as the metropolitan area. Camping and other outdoor activities were still the most popular in Company and Patrol programs, and the Camping Department encouraged many more Guides to gain Patrol Camp Permits. Ranger BRANCH Apart from the regular meetings and a program with a strong emphasis on service, the Rangers enjoyed many extra activities. Some of these were annual events - a swimming carnival, Rover/Ranger Ball, Ranger Regatta, Anzac Day services with H.M.A.S. Moreton, and other activities included such events as camps, sports, a cruise, concert, dinners, rallies, hikes, rock climbing and theatre visits. Programs included make-up demonstrations, fire fighting, public speaking, singing, home decoration, police instruction talks on traffic laws, accident reports, evils of drink-driving, inspection and instruction on hospital routine, car maintenance, physical eduation and a discussion night on 'parentteenager relationship'. 1965/66 There were 2 Cadet Companies, 25 Land Ranger Companies, 5 Air Crews, 4 Sea Crews, 2 Extension and 4 Lone Companies. One Ranger gained her Aboriginal Certificate and three Lones carried Mrs.Buntine's Standard in Atherton. Ten Lones gathered for a memorable weekend in Cairns. 1966/67 Mrs.E.C.Davidson completed her term and Mrs.C.Beedell was appointed Ranger Adviser. Those who attended the special camps in New Zealand and Gladstone formed some very firm and lasting friendships and shared their experiences by getting together to show slides and souvenirs - and to talk. The Gladstone Venture was a grand success. Ranger and Cadet Council was formed and helped the Ranger Branch Council in organising various functions. 1967/68

Sea Rangers from Mackay and a Lone Land Ranger from Bundaberg joined with Rangers from all parts of Australia and overseas in an exciting venture to Alice Springs from Adelaide. An exciting event was the visit of the Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell, particularly when Rangers, Rovers and Guide Patrol Leaders met in an informal, happy and relaxed gathering at the Riverside Ballroom. Nobody present will ever forget the atmosphere. The Rover/Ranger Council organised various functions - the Ranger/Rover Ball when twenty-four debutantes were presented to Dame Annabelle Rankin, a dinner dance, sports day, camps - all very successful functions. Miss Ranger, Nadine Warfield, won the Miss Warana Quest in /69 R.A.N.C.A. (Ranger Cadet Council) Easter Venture for 1968 was a bus trip through northern New South Wales. Interesting activities included visiting rock caves, bushranger haunts and gem collecting. Rover/Ranger activities were again enjoyed. The Annual Ball held at Cloudland was a great success, with nineteen girls being presented to the Hon. Mr. Fletcher, Minister for Education and Cultural Development. 1969/70 Fifteen girls attended the South Australian Ranger Moot. Ranger Guides joined Senior Scouts in their Easter Adventure to Tewantin and the Cooloola Sands. This was so successful that in 1971 the girls were invited again and took part in both the North and South Area Adventures. In 1970 Ranger/Rover Council arranged their first Service Camp for Crippled Children. This proved so successful that the camps have continued every year since. The Girralong Extension Ranger Guides enjoyed many activities including day hikes, barbeques, ten-pin bowling as well as joining active Units in their programs on some occasions. They organised a picture evening and donated the money raised to the Autistic Children's Society. EXTENSION SECTION The Extension Section Committee met at regular intervals. This section was growing and an increasing number of children with handicaps were being absorbed into active Units throughout the State. Invitations extended for the girls to take part in a variety of outdoor and other activities were very much appreciated. 1966/67 The Assistant Extension Adviser, Miss Avis Wood, who was handicapped herself, died suddenly on 1st May Patricia Wain, a Wybenia Brownie, gained her Golden Hand. The Extension Ranger Company at Ipswich became the first Extension Trefoil Guild in Queensland. The All Australia Extension Training Conference was held at Kindilan in The Conference with its theme "opportunities through Guiding" gave added knowledge and new ideas to all. 1967/68 A new Guide Company was opened at Headquarters. Wybenia Brownie Pack enjoyed a Pack holiday at Kindilan with the Beaudesert Brownies in spite of the terrible floods everywhere. The Rangers continued to make good progress and had some wonderful outings during the year, while the Toowoomba Guide Company gained two Red Bars and two Second-Class Badges. They also held a camp in April 1967, which was much enjoyed.

All the Brisbane and Toowoomba Extensions celebrated Thinking Day 1968 with a bus trip to the Queensland Agricultural College at Lawes, and this gave many Guides and Brownies their first real contact with farm animals. Extensions were at the airport in May 1967 to meet Lady Baden-Powell and many were thrilled to shake hands with her. 1968/69 Extension Section increased its number with the re-opening of the Montrose Brownie Pack which had been in recess for some years. This Pack was run by two new Guiders. Miss H. Lewis and Mrs.Minty, who have half the Pack handicapped, the remainder active. This arrangement seemed to work very well. These Brownie Guides attended a Church Parade in their Division for Thinking Day. The Wybenia Brownie Pack at the Spastic Centre was progressing under the Leadership of Miss M. Ellis and were indebted to Mr.J.Sneddon and Wavell Heights and Northgate Nundah parents for transport. Extension Brownie Guides during the year took part in Division and District activities such as swimming carnivals and revels, all of which were much enjoyed. Beaudesert Brownies and Mrs.Snow took the Wybenia Brownies for a wonderful Pack Holiday at Kindilan on the Queen's Birthday weekend. The Guide Company in Toowoomba and the Waminda Company in Brisbane continued to progress and enjoyed attending and taking part in District and Division activities during the year, and also joined together in October for a camp at Kindilan. Ten active Guides also attended this camp, but unfortunately, although it was intended to have some camping outdoors on this occasion, all Guides and Leaders were forced to camp indoors, owing to bush fires which made camping in tents too dangerous. The Girralong Rangers made good progress during the year under the very able Leadership of Mrs.Berridge, and several times these girls have held very enjoyable musical evenings for the entertainment of parents and friends. The Rangers, beside their regular meetings, have had a number of outings including a visit to the Brisbane Exhibition, and they have also attended a weekend camp at Kindilan, all activities being much enjoyed. 1969/70 The Guide Company at the Montrose Crippled Children's Home re-opened after being in recess for some years but unfortunately was forced into recess again because of the unavailability of Leaders. The Brownie Guide Pack at Montrose was still functioning. Extensions were represented at a Conference of the 'Australian Council for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled' in Sydney during May In May, members of the Girralong Ranger Guide Company were entertained on a week's holiday in Sydney. In January 1970, a party of Ranger Guides, Guides and Leaders travelled to Yarra Junction near Melbourne to attend the Extensions International Camp "Endeavour". It was the first time many had been away from home and a tremendous adventure. Lone SECTION Guiders expressed appreciation of the 'Captains' Newsletter' which was compiled by the Lone Adviser three or four times a year. Ranger numbers increased greatly and a number helped with Guide Companies and Brownie Packs. Lones were grateful for the invitations to take part in camping and other activities with active Units. Service continued to be an important part of the program.

Production of the magazine 'Gilliana' continued. 1965/66 Closer contact was maintained with interstate Advisers during the year by means of tape recording and this proved valuable to all. Three Lones carried Mrs. Buntine's standard in Atherton and ten Lones gathered for a memorable weekend in Cairns. One Ranger Guider, Mrs.M.P.Goodworth, obtained her Training Certificate on Postal Guiding, and she assisted greatly with the training of new Guiders from the Lone point of view. A new Ranger Company was formed in the north under Miss R. Blogg's guidance and they met together several times during the year. This was a means of keeping together some Queen's Guides who would have been lost to the Movement. The Ranger numbers have increased greatly and a number are helping with Guide Companies and Brownie Packs. A Supporters' Committee formed last year amongst the parents was proving popular and successful. 1966/67 A Lone Guide was awarded the Gilt Cross for bravery in a swimming rescue. A Lone Guide, 2 Lone Rangers and a Lone Guider were selected to go to New Zealand. Lone Rangers acted as orderlies at the Extensions Conference and also during the training week at Kindilan and Bluewater. Some Lones took part in Rover/Ranger activities. 1967/68 Lone Brownies were launched in Queensland and three Packs opened. Fifth Lone Ranger Company was opened. Two Lone Guides gained their Queen's Guide Badges. Through the Lones and Extensions Auxiliary the Lone Guiders at last gained the financial and moral support that Local Associations give to active Guiders. All funds raised were shared with Extension Section. Eleven Guiders were able to attend camp, and one Company had all its members in camp together. A Lone Rally was organised by Mrs. S. Schmidt of Townsville. 1968/69 The year 1968 saw steady growth in all three Branches in the Lone Section. The four Brownie Packs were full and there were three names on the waiting list. Eight Brownie Guides were enrolled during the year, which meant quite a lot of travelling for the Lone Brownie Magic Carpet and Enrolment Book, and three Golden Bars were gained. A Guider and two Brownie Guides joined 2nd Ipswich Pack for Thinking Day and Brownie Revels, and the Guider and three Brownie Guides went on a Pack Holiday with 2nd Ipswich. Twelve Guides were able to camp with active Companies and one Lone went to Campcraft and one to the Creative Arts camp at Kindilan. Three went to Bushcraft camp at Bluewater. There were four Lone Guide enrolments, one Second Class, one First Class and All Round Cords, one Bushcraft Emblem, one Little House, and one Queen's Guide Badge. There were forty-nine proficiency badges gained.
