Saturday saw participants travel to Woolwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Manly Beach, Sydney Olympic Park, Lidcombe and then to Nurragingy Reserve overnight.

2 The Amazing Race was a huge success last month with nearly 0 participants competing across Sydney and supported by over 90 adult volunteers. Teams travelled from Circular Quay on Friday evening via Observatory Hill to Cockatoo Island for Friday night. Saturday saw participants travel to Woolwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Manly Beach, Sydney Olympic Park, Lidcombe and then to Nurragingy Reserve overnight. Our final day featured the Rooty Hill, Penrith, Glenbrook and Westmead on the way to the finish line at Parramatta Town Hall. Over 30 activities were completed with participants travelling a total distance of more than 300 km using buses, trains and ferries. All Units in GWS fielded a team during the event including a good number of older Scouts, as well as a team from NSW Girl Guides and teams from Hume, South Coast, South Metropolitan, Sydney North, and The Golden West Regions. Congratulations to Nifty Ninjas from 1st Caringbah on winning the event. Full results are available on the Waratah Facebook page. 3 5th NSW Cuboree The 5th NSW Cuboree was held at Cataract Scout Park in January 14. A total of 69 Venturer Scouts and 158 Scouts from across New South Wales attended the event helping to run the Mega Base Activities for over 2,000 Cub Scouts. Channel Nine hosted their Today show at the Cuboree on Wednesday. Despite the early start, the Cuboree received some excellent promotions as a result. Highlights included our evening at the water slide, and a special Sub Camp 3 end of Cuboree celebration featuring food, drink, a DJ and several special gifts to recognise the huge effort of everyone involved. Venturer Scouts that worked at the NSW Cuboree can use the event towards their Service Badge at Venturer Award or Queen s Scout Award level. Simply add your Cuboree certificate to your portfolio as evidence in achieving the requirements of the badge!

4 Dragon Skin 14 Dragon Skin is a massive orienteering and initiative event specifically design for Venturers and Girl Guides. It runs for 4 days over Easter (18-21 April 14) and is held in a different state forest every year. This year Dragon Skin will be held at Newnes State Forrest near Lithgow NSW April 14 The game is simple. Venturers are dropped off in the forest where they hike in teams of up to 7 people completing challenges at approximately 40 activity bases. Teams are marked on their skill, teamwork and execution. By the end of the event the team with the most points win the coveted Dragon Skin! The Australian Contingent will be travelling from 18 July to 13 August 15. Troops will enjoy a week long tour of Japan before arriving at the Jamboree site in southern Japan. During the tour we will be visiting major attractions in Tokyo and Osaka, enjoying day trips to Mt Fuji and Universal Studios, riding the Shinkansen and even sleeping a night in a local traditional temple. The Jamboree will feature a wide range of exciting full day activities and several spectacular evening performances. All participants will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to honour the 70th anniversary of the first atomic bomb. After the Jamboree, youth members will also enjoy home hospitality with local Scouting families. The Contingent fee is just $6,750 and includes all meals, accommodation, activities, insurance, flights (from your nearest Capital City) and ground transportation between the date of departure from Australia and the date of return to Australia. There will be approximately 800 Scouts from Iceland and around the world. Highlights include overnight hiking for the Venturer age participants, Patrol of Iceland Challenge and the Icelandic Search and Rescue Games. Attendance fee including equipment hire and insurance will be approximately $950. Flights and other tourist attractions are additional. Tour options in Iceland include Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, Langjökull glacier, Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfross waterfall, and the geothermal valley of Geysir.

Mawson Scholarship in Leadership The Mawson Scholarship in Leadership is an advanced training program for Venturer Scouts aged 15 to 18 years.

8 Mawson Scholarship in Leadership The Mawson Scholarship in Leadership is an advanced training program for Venturer Scouts aged 15 to 18 years. Two courses will be running in 14 as follows: 7-11 July 14 Baden-Powell Park, Queensland 29 September 3 October 14 Bundilla Scout Camp, NSW Conducted over five days, participants will receive instruction and practical training in teamwork, communication, decision making and problem solving, conflict resolution, and event management. 24 participants will be selected to attend each course. Each Branch identifies its most talented and passionate youth members with the potential as great ambassadors for Scouting. All applications close on Thursday 27 March 14. Each participant must have completed the Venturer Scout Leadership Course prior to attending the course and should also hold a current leadership role or have recent leadership experience. The selection of participants will be managed by each Branch with the aim to select young leaders with the potential to enter dynamic leadership roles within their Branch. The cost to participants is $150 and your Branch Scholarship covers everything else. Participants will be accommodated in dormitories at the venue and full catering will be supplied. Flights to the venue will be provided free of charge. Successful candidates will be issued with tasks to be completed before arriving at the residential course. The Mawson Leadership program also provides ongoing mentoring support to all participants and each Branch is encouraged to engage their representatives in various leadership and spokesperson roles.
