2 Welcome to YMCA Fairthorne Manor Dear Group Leader Thank you for your enquiry regarding a group visit to Fairthorne Manor in For over 70 years YMCA Fairthorne Manor has delivered activity programmes and offered residential experiences to young people of all abilities to develop life skills, stimulate learning and improve confidence in a safe environment. We recognise that residential visits have the potential for life changing impact, so our welcoming team will ensure we provide experiences that support children and young people s learning and development. Activity Packages Most groups that visit us select one of our activity packages outlined below, but our flexibility enables us to offer bespoke visits, so please contact us to discuss your requirements: 5 day/4 night Residential Packages: Monday to Friday and includes full board, accommodation and a choice of 8, 12 or 16 activities per child (see page 6). Weekend Packages: Friday to Sunday and includes full board, accommodation and a choice of activities and room hire(see page 7). Day Visits: offered throughout the year from a single session to a full day (see page 8). For all school visits, please read the local authority guidance on page 10. Contact us Our friendly Sales Team will be happy to discuss your requirements, check availability and plan a programme that suits your group s needs. Contact them on Once you have confirmed your booking, our Programme Team will work with you to confirm the finer details of your visit. The team will provide information on accommodation, catering and your activity programme and liaise with you on the return of some details regarding your group requirements. In order to meet your requirements during your visit and maximise opportunities for learning, we advise that a pre-visit meeting at Fairthorne is essential. 3 Our activities Pioneering groups learn knot techniques and use imagination and new skills to build a structure. Team Challenge work together as your team race around our woodland assault course. Blind Trail teams must communicate as they make their way around our course after we remove a vital sense. Challenge Challenge Challenge Low Ropes Course groups use team work, decision making & communication skills on our woodland course. Archery - develop dexterity, control and precision on adjustable target ranges in our sports hall. Initiative Tests work in small teams to analyse & solve puzzles, tasks and activities together. Challenge Den Building learn basic construction techniques, best locations & materials to build your own shelter in the woods. Campfire Skills learn about the fire triangle, campfire construction & fire safety, before trying out new skills. Camouflage & Tracking use techniques to camouflage yourself & utulise new tracking skills to find others. Bushcraft Bushcraft Bushcraft 3
4 Our activities Land Ecology explore our wet-woodland, catch & identify minibeasts, encouraging pupils to link location & adaptation. Water Ecology catch, identify & consider the adaptations of fauna thriving in our pond, stream and estuary. Orienteering/Compass Skills Navigate your way around our site as you gather clues for a fun challenge. Ecology Ecology Aerial Runway - experience the thrill of the ride as you launch yourself, along our zip wire from a raised platform. Abseiling test your nerves as you lean out and make your way down our purpose built 15m abseil wall Crate Challenge build a crate tower as you climb, using balance, co-ordination & communication. High Ropes High Ropes High Ropes Climbing learn basic climbing skills and techniques as you scale our purpose-built climbing wall. Jacob s Ladder climb the 8m ladder in small teams, but beware the rungs get further apart the higher you go. Vertical Assault test your agility as you navigate your way up through cargo nets, tyres and ladders. High Ropes High Ropes High Ropes 4
5 Our activities Water based activities: Kata Canoeing our twin hulled canoes offer great stability as groups of up to 12 children enjoy a paddle along the river. Boat Trip enjoy the delights of the River Hamble in one of our sturdy gigs, taking in the flora, fauna and a story or two along the way. Canoeing journey along the Hamble in our open Canadian canoes in 3s or 4s; canoes can be rafted together for greater stability. Water Water Water Kayaking learn paddling skills & develop technique and confidence through a variety of games and exercises on our sheltered lake. Raft Building work together to design and build your own raft using barrels, logs and straps before launching on our lake. Sailing - learn some of the basics of sailing a craft under the guidance of our RYA qualified staff along our stretch of the River Hamble. Water Water Water Stream Exploration venture into our stream and work together to navigate the obstacles. Communication is key!. Stand-Up Paddleboards use your balance and newly discovered co-ordination skills as you explore and build your water confidence. Water Water Residential groups are offered evening activities which may include sports & games, campfire and disco. For weekend visit options, contact us to discuss your requirements. All activities are subject to availability and operational conditions. All activities are programmed at the discretion of the YMCA. 5

7 2018 Weekend visits Weekend visits offer a flexible option for those looking for a shorter stay. Build your own package from the options below, simply add together your accommodation price, activities and room hire. We can offer bespoke programmes to include a different number of activities or room hire; please contact us with your requirements. 8 2018 Day Visits Visit us for a single activity session, a whole day or add extra activities to your residential visit. All activities run for 90 minutes in fixed time slots and include all instruction and equipment. 9 Pricing & Operational information Please note the following information with regards to our prices and operational procedures: All prices are per young person and subject to VAT at the current rate. There is a maximum of 12 people per activity group. An adult must accompany each activity group of up to 12 children, but are not included in the group size. All activity sessions run for 90 mins. Our activities are only offered in fixed time slots. Water activities are only offered Apr-Oct, inclusive. Alternative activities offered outside of these dates. Activity programmes are allocated on a first come, first served basis in order of booking. Activities are programmed at the discretion of the YMCA. We reserve the right to replace any activity or change programmes in the event of operational or availability issues. In addition, for residential groups: Residential prices are based on a minimum of 12 children and include activities as specified, accommodation and full board (for stays during the week, first meal is lunch, last meal lunch. For weekend visits, first meal is dinner, last meal is lunch.) One free staff place for every 12 young people (applicable to school and youth groups only). Additional staff are charged at 31 per night + VAT to cover bed and board only. Young people aged 12 and over (Yr 8) are served adult food portions at an additional charge of 2.80/day + VAT A chef cooked BBQ is available as an evening meal replacement at a cost of 1.75 per person-minimum 95 + VAT All residential groups must provide their own sleeping bag, pillow and pillowcase, including tent groups. We will provide each person staying in indoor accommodation with a bed sheet. Tent groups must provide their own sleeping mat. The price is based on the first date of stay if the stay overlaps different pricing seasons. Bank holidays - 4 day/3 night weeks can be booked at 80% of the cost quoted for a 5 night residential visit. Prices are valid for children and young people adult rates available on application. Local authority guidance We recognise that each Local Authority issues guidance to schools about residential visits. We ask that all schools seek individual guidance from their Local Authority prior to booking. All Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and West Berkshire schools should follow the advice given by Hampshire Outdoor Education Service. Appropriate and comfortable participation in water sports is dependent on an individual s water confidence this advice can be found in Safety in Adventurous Activities published by Hampshire County Council which is available to download from the Resources section of Evolve ( The standard Hampshire consent form covers this and can be found at Please consider this when selecting your programme. 9
