11 1962: Professor W. Lambert ( Stuttgart) was commissioned by VAG to render an expert opinion how to improve the situation of public transport. The delays of tram-lines went up to 20 minutes in the rush hour. He suggested an underground tram with the option to upgrade to a classic metro later on. 12 A lot of German cities were going this way Bielefeld Bochum Bonn Dortmund Duisburg Düsseldorf Essen Frankfurt am Main Köln Mülheim an der Ruhr Hannover Stuttgart..but the disadvantages of upgrading solutions are : - different height of platform - different vehicle width - integration in the public place (high platforms) - problems for handicapped people - transport of delay of the above sections in tunnels - decades of intermediate stage - tremendous costs for upgrading ( nowadays with low-floor tram systems most of those disadvantages are avoidable) 12

15 Integration of Langwasser area: Since 1956 site utilisation of an area of 600 hectare in Langwasser for inhabitants. The idea was a central developement with public transport and pedestrian zones, but also by cars. This area should be part of the metro system 15
