4 WELCOME Enjoy exploring 30 of the Sunshine Coast s most intriguing buildings on Saturday 21 October. Sunshine Coast Open House is a free event, which provides visitors with the rare opportunity to tour architecturally diverse, well-designed and historic buildings across the region. Presented by Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Council and the Australian Institute of Architects Sunshine Coast Regional Committee, Sunshine Coast Open House also celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast. MESSAGE FROM THE SUNSHINE COAST MAYOR Welcome to the inaugural Sunshine Coast Open House, where we celebrate our region s architecture and coming of age in innovative private and public building design. This year is a special one for our region as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast. We are celebrating our identity, engaging our community and showcasing our history and what we have to look forward to in the years to come. The inaugural Sunshine Coast Open House, partly funded by our Cultural Heritage Levy, forms part of our 50th anniversary celebrations with visitors able to engage with our past and future as they wander through the amazing buildings on display. As a council, we have a keen focus on promoting sustainable design and innovation in a built environment and are working towards becoming a leader in the cleantech space, which will open great opportunities for our Sunshine Coast into the future. I would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors and organisers for their enormous efforts in making this inaugural Sunshine Coast Open House come to life. With very best wishes, Mark Jamieson Sunshine Coast Mayor 02

5 MESSAGE FROM THE NOOSA MAYOR MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (QLD) PRESIDENT Good architecture responds to both the landscape and human needs. This dual function is clearly evident in many buildings across the Sunshine Coast. The climate inspires outdoor living and this in turn stimulates designs that are sympathetic to the natural environment. The region is also a hotbed of creative imagination, with both established and emerging architects garnering attention for their inspirational designs. Such creativity is not restricted to the design of private homes, for there are many public buildings worthy of note. Earlier this year, the Cooroy Library, as just one example, was identified by Urban Development Industry as one of the 6 coolest libraries in the world. How cool is that? Of course every building contributes to quality of life for its specific users and the broader community. Architects and designers have thus played a significant role influencing the overall look-and-feel of this glorious region. I d like to pay tribute to all involved in bringing the 2017 Sunshine Coast Open House to fruition, with special thanks to those who have made their dwellings available. Your contribution to greater public awareness of design excellence is sincerely valued. Tony Wellington Noosa Mayor Architecture is undoubtedly a form of visual art, indeed it s the art form that most impacts the physical world we live in. As architects we are creators, not merely of the built environment but of culture and the identity of a city. We create enduring and irrevocable works that can become permanent expressions of a society s values, ideology, and aspirations at a fixed point in time. Architects create buildings that reflect the progression and growth of our communities, including technological advancements. We are no doubt creating history through design that will speak of our cultural identity to future generations. Queensland is undergoing rapid growth and change, including the Sunshine Coast. With this come the questions of how issues of sustainability, urban regeneration, and economic development are exemplified in urban environments, and how sustainability must be defined not only in engineering terms, but also in social terms. The Sunshine House Open House program allows us to take this conversation into the broader community, allowing us to showcase architecture and its impacts ranging from the family home through to public spaces and critical infrastructure. The Australian Institute of Architects feels strongly about ensuring good design and architecture is accessible to the community and is a proud supporter of the inaugural Sunshine Coast Open House program. Bruce Wolfe President, Australian Institute of Architects (Qld) 03

13 1. BUTTER FACTORY ARTS CENTRE ADDRESS. 11a Maple Street, Cooroy OPEN. 10am 3pm (no booking required) TOURS. Self-guided access. Visit the Boiler House, Sawdust Hopper, timber drying Kiln and the surrounding patio depicting some of the mill site history, as well as the Log Maze. TOUR TIP. Limited wheelchair access ARCHITECT. Mr H Hammar (Engineer) BUILT WEBSITE. butterfactoryartscentre.com.au In 1903 the Cooroy Sawmill was established by the Straker family. The mill processed many different hardwoods as they were harvested by the settling families, most of whom were timber getters or budding farmers as the timber was removed and grazing lands established. This quickly led to needing a Butter Factory (also on this site) processing milk products. This process ran for nearly a century but did decline in the latter years of the 20th century as viable timber became scarce. When the mill closed in 2000 the Cooroy Future Group (a group of volunteers) working closely with Noosa Council saved a number of the mill buildings for posterity. The Boiler House which burned sawdust to heat air to dry out the timber in the Kiln was saved as well as the sawdust hopper and Kiln. These have been restored so visitors can see how they worked. The area is surrounded with a patio depicting other historical markers and serves as a picnic site for visitors. Adjacent to the Boiler House is the Log Maze which was created by Noosa High School students to demonstrate the relation of timber growth when seen against the many steep mountains (formerly volcano cones) of the area. 11

Self-guided access and guided tours at 9:30am; 10:45am; 12:30pm; 1:45pm. Register for guided tours on the day at Cooroy Library (tours start at the Cooroy Library) TOUR TIP. Please wear enclosed footwear ARCHITECT. Unknown BUILT with restoration and addition of interpretive elements in 2009, and remediation works in Heritage Listed. WEBSITE. environment.ehp.qld.gov.au/heritageregister/detail/?id= The Cooroy Lower Mill Site Kiln was built in the late 1950s as a joint venture between Straker and Sons Pty Ltd, the owners of the timber mill on the site, and J Wilkinson and Sons Pty Ltd, local saw millers. It is notable as being the only known example of a timber drying kiln in the Sunshine Coast region and for being in a highly intact condition. The kiln represents the post-world War II trend to streamline operations and acquire technology to remain competitive in the industry. The kiln enabled faster seasoning of hardwood timbers, allowing the mill to increase productivity and expand its markets. The kiln was heated with steam generated from the adjacent boiler, which was fuelled with waste from the sawmill. It remained in operation until 2000 when the mill was closed as part of the Regional Forests Agreement for South East Queensland. In 2009, the kiln and boiler house underwent restoration and redevelopment as a visitor interpretive centre as part of the development of the Cooroy Lower Mill Precinct. The kilns also serve as a workshop for local woodworkers. 13

17 BOOKINGS REQUIRED Christopher Frederick Jones 5. TENT HOUSE ADDRESS. Verrierdale (address confirmed when booking secured) TOURS. Pre-booked guided tours with the architect at 10am, 10.45am, 11.30am & 12.15pm. Book via sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au TOUR TIP. No wheelchair access ARCHITECT. Sparks Architects BUILT WEBSITE. sparksarchitects.com/verrierdale-2 AWARDS. Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Sunshine Coast Regional Awards Project of the Year, AIA Queensland Houses Award, National Houses Commendation for Houses over 200m 2, National Houses Commendation for Sustainability This forest clearing addressing a pocket of rainforest in the Noosa hinterland is approached through a typical neighbourhood of rural houses and acreage dwellings. The journey to the house continues from the street via a winding bush track through the forest which acts as a threshold between the constructed world and that of the clearing, a place remnant of early settlement in the region; a camp. Flanking the northern side of the camp is a lush tropical wall of trees, 40m tall. A small creek along this boundary also provides a riparian corridor for local flora and fauna. Due to the limited size of the clearing the house needed to address the full height of the forest wall and look to capture the sky above, or risk a feeling of confinement. The scale and density of the surrounding forest also reduces winter sun penetration and ultimately creates its own micro-climate. The brief called for a 4 bedroom family dwelling with a central open plan living and kitchen space. Responding to this and the unique site, the living space feeds to east and west corridors providing bedroom access, and nooks for study, day bed and storage. The pavilion running along the east-west contour allows all rooms to enjoy the rainforest view to the north maximising winter solar gain. The architectural response is a dual concept pairing an operable insulated box for cooler months that allows habitation to a tent-like amenity in warmer months. The walls, or doors, of the box slide open manually, while the roof, or lid, has an automated sliding operation. With the roof fully open the translucent tent membrane comes into view and a new volume, light, and material is experienced. As the doors slide open the forest wall becomes an architectural element; a natural wall that contains a broader space of the house plan, stretching it across the remaining clearing and garden. The tent roof serves as a fly roof above the insulated roof and takes the brunt of the heat load. The void between the two roof elements allows for a simple stack ventilation process. The varied pitches of the tent roof maximise winter sun penetration and protects the east, west and southern exposures. This deceptively small yet undeniably dynamic building allows for the owners to live simply and comfortably whilst maximising their engagement with a very special site. 15

19 Cape Tiene Photography 6. THE MAJESTIC THEATRE ADDRESS. 3 Factory Street, Pomona OPEN. 10am 4pm (no booking required) TOURS. Self-guided access. Explore the Main Hall, Stage, foyer and dining room, rear garden and view rare restoration works on the theatre s organ. ARCHITECT. Unknown BUILT. Originally built in Refurbished in Heritage Listed. WEBSITE. themajestictheatre.com.au Cape Tiene Photography The Majestic theatre is one of the few pre-world War II picture theatres remaining in Queensland that have not been demolished or adapted to other uses. It is also Australia s longest continuously operating picture theatre and the world s longest continuously operating silent film theatre. The Majestic Theatre was originally built as a social hall with attached shops in Despite the building being extensively restored and refurbished in 2006, the timber and fibrous cement sheeted building is still a rare, and functional, example of a pre-world War II country hall that was converted into a picture theatre. The hall was designed to serve several functions: to show silent movies, for vaudeville productions, and to act as a social centre for the town. Over time it served as a venue for dances, balls, concerts, and wedding functions, roller skating, boxing, and church services. Constructed of unseasoned milled hardwood, the hall was about 12 metres wide by 18 metres long, with seating for 198 people. It included a sprung dance floor of inch crow s ash timber, still extant today, and was raised on stumps to avoid flooding. In the mid 1920s a supper room was added to the long southeast elevation of the hall, and this section was later extended to the northeast. The enduring appeal of the theatre building lies in its unique and traditional furnishings and fixtures. Stage drapes, furnishings and equipment were salvaged from the Regent, Wintergarden, Her Majesty s theatres in Brisbane, and the Wintergarden in Ipswich. Following its five year long restoration, later this year the Majestic theatre will house one of only three English Compton Organs in Queensland. Featuring over 600 pipes, the organ has already attracted worldwide attention from those who appreciate its magical sound. 17

Limited wheelchair access. Enter via Currie Street and tour Level 1 (ex Club Hotel Boarding House accommodation) ARCHITECT. Original architect unknown. Renovation by KP Architects BUILT and licenced in It was destroyed by fire in January 1938 (Arthur G Cooper, licensee) and rebuilt on the same site. The building was extended in 1960 and renovated in WEBSITE. theboardingoffice.com.au kparchitects.com.au/portfolio/nambourclub-hotel/ Nambour s landmark Club Hotel was originally built in 1911 as a timber saloon something quite typical for that era. It burnt down during a main street fire that decimated half of the town in the late 1930s and was reconstructed. Its redesign portrays a distinctive art deco style that s still reflected in the building to this day. For Currie Street and the wider Nambour community, this building has stood as an important part of their history for many years. It has been the gatekeeper to the town, the iconic cane crossing of the main street where the tracks still remain, and of course the original Moreton Sugar Mill. The Mill site which is now the site of a Coles supermarket, the Nambour & District Historical Museum Association and the iconic cane crossing of the main street, sit adjacent the rear of the site. Fortunately previous tenants always had a mutual respect for the space, operating their businesses in a way that honoured its rich history and iconic features and left much of the original construction and style in place. The Boarding Office, current Level 1 tenants of this building, have recently completed a renovation of the floor that had previously been vacant for over 10 years. The renovation pays homage to the building s unique style and beauty and its past use as a boarding house. 20

Although the council chambers was designed to accommodative a total of 12 floors, 5 floors were built with the vision for future expansion over time. The Maleny Lodge is a significant example of both an early 20th century house in Maleny, in addition to evidence of the development of the tourist industry in Maleny from the 1930 s. The current building features seven bedrooms complete with ensuites, each containing antique furniture and furnishings in keeping with the Federation era. The opulence of the building is confirmed by its planning around a long hall leading to the formal living room complete with rich timber detailing and Art Nouveau/Federation styling. 25

28 14. MARY CAIRNCROSS SCENIC RESERVE DISCOVERY CENTRE ADDRESS. 148 Mountain View Road, Maleny OPEN. 9am 4.30pm (no booking required) TOURS. Self-guided access and guided tours with the architects at 2pm, 3pm & 4pm ARCHITECT. Guymer Bailey with Norman Richards Building Design + Interiors BUILT WEBSITE. mary-cairncross.com.au guymerbailey.com.au The new Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre nestles on the edge of the Reserve s subtropical rainforest and overlooks exceptional Glasshouse Mountain views. In the Rainforest Discovery Centre visitors can learn about the Reserve s remnant rainforest in its living museum of diverse flora and fauna, and even various endangered species, reinforcing its role as a regionally significant centre for conservation, education and partnerships. The architecture is designed to accentuate the site. It provides opportunities for visitors to experience the contrast of the wider views of the mountains to the south, and the more intimate connection to the rainforest to the north and west. It achieves this by framing views and blurring the edge between internal and external spaces. Sustainability guided all aspects of the design, with the majority of the building naturally ventilated and naturally lit, capturing all its own water, treating waste water on site, and only plant species endemic to the area were used for additional landscaping. Locally sourced basalt and natural materials which will weather with time clad the building. The building strives to connect visitors to their natural environment, to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of it, and encourage us all to live more sustainably. 26

29 BOOKINGS REQUIRED 15. TANDERRA HOUSE ADDRESS. Flaxton (address confirmed when booking secured) TOURS. Pre-booked guided tours at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm & 2pm. Book via sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au TOUR TIP. No wheelchair access ARCHITECT. Unknown BUILT Heritage Listed. It was around 1909 when Joseph and Alice Dixon constructed their family homestead at Flaxton on their 790-acre citrus and dairy property. The homestead for this large Quaker family was then known as Chermside. Obviously, the house today is vastly different in size and layout to the original homestead Joseph constructed. At some stage during the 1970 s there was a name change from the original Chermside to Tanderra House, and it remains that way today. The homestead when constructed was your typical Queenslander with the exterior walls being lined on only one side of the wall frame and the typical wide-open verandahs around the house. Internally the ceilings were high as there was no air-conditioning in that era. The floors to the main building are the original pit sawn beech. Alice Dixon passed in 1927 and Joseph two years later, when Alice died it was during a spell of very wet weather and it was not possible to have the burial on Mapleton, hence she was interned in the small cemetery plot along Flaxton Mill Road, later Joseph alongside Alice. As mentioned Tanderra House is now larger and somewhat different to the original house, however the bones of the original homestead are still evident, and all the work performed through the decades has been completed with both passion and longevity in mind. Each of the minders of the residence over the years have added their mark to what Joseph Dixon started over a century ago, and one would hope that the same will be said in another 100 years. Along with the house, are the ever-changing gardens, however some of the trees date back to the time when the house was first constructed, notably the huge Magnolia Grandiflora. Tanderra House does form a stately backdrop to the gardens which are being continually developed. There is a lot of history which surrounds the old homestead and the forbearers, but it lives on as a valuable illustration of our past heritage. 27

31 17. GREGSON & WEIGHT BUDERIM CHAPEL COMPLEX ADDRESS. 159 Wises Road, Buderim OPEN. 9am 2pm (no booking required) TOURS. Self-guided access and guided tours with the architects at 11am and 1.30pm ARCHITECT. Crossley Architects BUILT WEBSITE. gregsonweight.com.au/our-locations/ buderim/ The end of a loved one s life is a difficult experience for many of us. As the project s architect, Crossley Architects recognised their responsibility to create this Chapel Complex as an extraordinary venue for the Gregson family to deliver funeral services, to make a place for our community to come together to mourn collectively, to celebrate a life and accept the end of a journey. These buildings are nondenominational in their symbolism, warm, respectful, and honourable. A core foundation of the design was the placement of the central axis of the main chapel on a perfect East West alignment, acknowledging the essential symbolism of the rising and setting of the sun. For this, the site is perfect, as it places the chapel close by and opening onto a beautiful coastal paperbark forest. The architecture of the chapel complex is purposeful, simplified and unpretentious with great care and attention given to the creation of graceful interior spaces, harmonious with their environment. The design is enhanced through discrete handling of all required functions, expression of structure, attention to finishes, detailing and careful selection of materials. The paper bark trees, colours and textures are reflected throughout the design. 29

Guided tours of the Lobby areas and Sky Deck on level 8 at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm ARCHITECT. Chris Klar (Design architect and sustainability consultant) and Michelle Wright (Project management), Queensland Department of Public Works BUILT The Mike Ahern Centre, located in First Avenue, Maroochydore, reached practical completion on 18 April The building provides approximately 8600 square metres for government office accommodation. The Queensland Government identified the need for a new building in Maroochydore after an extensive review of the current and future accommodation needs of agencies located in the region. A need for a single point of contact for the community for government services was recognised, which called for the consolidation of the many government services in the area to come together under one roof. The Mike Ahern Centre reflected the government s vision and commitment toward a greener future for government office accommodation with a requirement for a building that incorporated innovative solutions with the best ecologically sustainable practices. The then Department of Public Works designed and delivered the building to meet very high Environmentally Sustainable Development benchmarks with particular emphasis on energy and water efficiency, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a healthy indoor environment. The Green Building Council of Australia has formally recognised the project for world leadership in ecologically sustainable office building design, confirming that it has formally received 6 Star Green Star ratings in the Office Design v2 and Office As-Built v2, and 5 Star Green Star rating in the Interiors v1.1 categories. 31

Pre-booked guided tours with the architect at 2pm & 3pm. Book via sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au TOUR TIP. No wheelchair access ARCHITECT. Clare Design BUILT WEBSITE. claredesign.com.au/portfolio/ residential/cotton-tree/ AWARDS. Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Qld Multiple Housing Award 1996, RAIA (National) Environment Citation 1996 In 1992 three forums were held to investigate socially, environmentally and aesthetically appropriate housing for the Sunshine Coast region. The Cotton Tree Pilot Housing Project was one of the outcomes. It was designed to provide a flexible alternative for medium density subtropical housing in older suburban and urban areas on the coast. The commission came from the owners of adjoining sites: the Department of Housing and the Beecham family. The land, in close proximity to public facilities, shopping, employment and recreational areas was considered ideal for a pilot project. Both clients wanted to build affordable housing. The development consists of a series of attached and detached dwellings, stepping from one to three storeys to optimise summer cooling from the prevailing sea breezes and northern winter sun. Shared boundaries were adjusted to preserve a stand of paperbark trees. Subsequent environmental studies by the University of Queensland have found a substantial reduction in heat island effect, owing to the siting, permeability, shading, orientation and landscape strategies in the design. The private development component is a series of townhouses made of lightweight timber- framed construction. The public housing component is a combination of lightweight reverse masonry veneer construction whereby the masonry is weatherproofed and shaded by a skin of corrugated iron or fibre cement board. Apart from the insulating qualities of reverse veneer, this construction technique also allowed the language of materials and the aesthetics of assembly to be used across the whole site. Noel Robinson Architects Collaborative BUILT WEBSITE. usc.edu.au/explore/sustainable-usc/ sustainable-development Located at the Sunshine Coast campus, the University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery is a public gallery that presents a dynamic program of exhibitions that focus on contemporary art and design. The art gallery was designed as part of a publicly activated piazza which provided a north-east facing courtyard for student activities. The art gallery provides a vital role for the university s cultural contribution to the Sunshine Coast community and its students. The gallery consists of 300sqm of internal gallery space and the associated archival storage workshops and curatorial staff functions. The gallery space is double volume and lit by a natural south light; there are folding screens which form valuable internal spaces with additional hanging space for exhibits. Sunshine Coast Building of the Year Award 2008, Queensland Public Architecture Award 2008, Queensland Harry S Marks Award for Sustainable Architecture 2008, Queensland Colourbond Award for Steel Architecture 2008 The Chancellery was completed in December 2006 as part of stage six of the campus development. The firm Architectus designed this building to embody the University of the Sunshine Coast s (USC) commitment to an authentic subtropical public architecture. Its location consolidates the central precinct of the campus master plan, which is based on the Jeffersonian model of the University of Virginia. Placed directly opposite the Library, the Chancellery creates a hub and student focus while deferring to the Library as the University s architectural centrepiece. It has a 250-seat auditorium, tutorial rooms, student commons space, academic offices, a café and USC senior executive offices, and Council meeting rooms. Wide stairs lead up to quite different, yet visually linked, zones: to one side the Chancellery, and to the other, a large open timber deck. The deck is an open-air learning space equipped with power and data for flexible, casual student learning and interaction. This large atrium space a roofed piazza operates like a town square and provides a social focus for the collegiate fraternity. Ecologically sustainable design principles are central to the design. Offices and tutorial rooms are mixed-mode, that is, they operate without air-conditioning for most of the year, however each room has an individual airconditioning unit to maintain comfort during temperature extremes. Separate switching for each space eliminates unnecessary use of energy. All corridors are external and not air-conditioned, and the lecture theatre is cooled by a displacement air system. 34

As part of University of the Sunshine Coast s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, this includes openable windows and two large thermal chimneys to increase air movement through the building and decrease reliance on air-conditioning. The ground floor contains department offices as well as smart tutorial rooms and a flexible 75-seat collaborative teaching theatre. Level 1 is predominantly dedicated to general teaching, simulated learning and e-learning experiences. Additionally, on Level 1 is an immersive Cave environment used for broader experiential teaching and research. Level 2 is predominantly given over to staff offices and training spaces, and a common sessional staff area that enables face-to-face student/ teacher interaction. Student commons, for self-directed study and group work, are found throughout the ground floor and level 1 of the building. Rainwater is retained in storage tanks and integrated into the existing campus rainwater harvesting system. The dedicated wetland area also allows for stormwater detention and enhances the quality of the outdoor environment through native plantings, sculptures and meeting places in the Buranga Garden area (Nga Tana Lui Dhar). 35

Book via sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au TOUR TIP. No wheelchair access ARCHITECT. Shaun Lockyer Architects BUILT WEBSITE. lockyerarchitects.com.au V House is a Brazilian-Modernist inspired courtyard home built from off-form concrete, stone and timber, along the banks of the Mooloolah River. The idea for this home is all about simple forms and honest, robust materials. The defining architectural expression is the large homogeneous iron bark timber screen wall that forms a double façade on the otherwise single depth floor plan. The living spaces form a transparent spine which mediates between the intimacy of the internal, north facing courtyard and the extroversion of the compressed waterfront edge that incorporates a fire pit shrouded in a landscaped berm above the pontoon space. Operable walls and screens offer degrees of enclosure and engagement that occupants can calibrate to suit their needs. Strong planes of timber and concrete internally create for a rich, robust and textural backdrop to the environment and furnishings, all heightened by the carefully curated play of light and shadow throughout the home. This is a house that is all about the location, the context and the lifestyle. A strong emphasis on landscape softening completes the story of this sub-tropical island home. 40

WEBSITE. sunshinecoastplaces.com.au/ caloundra/kings-beach/canberra-tce/ 3-canberra-tce---lighthouses The Caloundra Lighthouses mark the entry to the North West Channel, the main shipping route into Brisbane. The 1896 lighthouse was constructed with a timber frame and corrugated iron cladding, a construction type unique to Queensland lighthouses. In 1968 it was replaced by the Signal Station, Light and Radar Installation, a reinforced concrete structure. The two sat side by side until 1970 when the 1896 lighthouse was relocated to Golden Beach. It remained there for 29 years. After the Signal Station was decommissioned due to changing technology, the 1896 lighthouse was restored to its original position. It is Caloundra s oldest building. There are spectacular views to the shipping channel, Moreton Island and the Glass House Mountains. Caloundra s European history is closely linked to the story of the lighthouses, and the two buildings provide evidence of the history of lighthouses from both ends of the time scale. Bark Design Architects BUILT with shop refurbishment in 2015 WEBSITE. gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au Caloundra Regional Gallery opened in August 2000 and is the flagship visual art space of the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area. The Gallery presents a changing program of curated and touring exhibitions featuring leading local and national artists. The curators and education staff develop and deliver a range of exhibitions and public programs exploring the unique culture and character of the Sunshine Coast, as well broader developments in Australian contemporary visual art and scholarship. In 1998, Bark Design Architects won an open competition to design the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery and it stands today as one of the firm s very first projects. This project realised the Council s proposal to upgrade and convert the old Caloundra Library into an Art Gallery to act as a hub for Caloundra s growing civic and cultural precinct. The transformed space integrates a series of flexible spaces with pivoting and sliding wall panels. Although remodelled, the existing building is visible through a new, fully-glazed retail space on the northeast corner of the plan. Alvar Aalto s 1937 undulating flower vase was a strong reference for the fluent plan of the space created. As such, the gallery building is conceived as a sculpture in its own right a sinuous volume with soft, fluid contours. The articulated membrane of glass transforms from a kaleidoscope that enhances the changing light throughout the day into a lantern amongst the trees at night. In 2016 a mural by Western Australian artists Kyle Hughes-Odgers and Andrew Frazer was commissioned by Sunshine Coast Council s Public Art unit for the south external wall of the gallery building, as part of the inaugural Horizon Festival of Arts and Culture. 42

Peddle Thorp Architects BUILT WEBSITE. peddlethorp.com.au/experience/ commercial/view-caloundra-city-counciladmin-building In the early 1990 s, the Caloundra City Council, commissioned the construction of a new administration building and chambers to accommodate the expansion of this fast growing region. The Council engaged Peddle Thorp Architects to provide a modern administration building that reflected the Sunshine Coast architectural style of the time. The architect created a building that was low in scale and incorporated a large, over sailing butterfly roof. The building features subtropical design elements through the use of external sun shading devices and projected floor plates. This reflects the movement at the time towards more energy efficient office space. The Council Chambers has a large curved glass wall to the south and large raking ceilings to reflect a transparent and open local government. Opened in 1995 the building currently accommodates Sunshine Coast Council Caloundra Chambers and Caloundra Administration. 43

A colonnade representative of a steel forest defines the edge of the building providing an architectural veil separating the predominant glass façade and interiors from the urban fabric. Structurally, the roof form consists of simple A frame trusses inverted to form a flat roof, each truss individually supported by a steel column. The combination of the column repetition together with the inverted trusses, forming a metal clad raked soffit, generate the main façades of the building. The exterior contrasts with the glazed curtain wall and interiors which consist of cedar and ply. The brief required additional commercial space and this has been generated along the main street frontage for maximum exposure and visibility, with the specialist Clinic accessed via a cloister revealing the quantum of the inverted truss. 44
