2 AN OVERVIEW OF OMAN S CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Oman s construction sector is forecast to grow to US$ 6 billion in 2016, up from US$ 5.6 billion in There are currently about 900 existing projects in the Sultanate s industrial zones, with 242 projects under construction that will enter the operating stage within two years. The investment in industrial zones in Oman exceeded US$ 13 billion, which is seen to bring higher investments in industrial estates in the coming years and boost the role of Oman as an export country. Demand from the private real estate sector is also driving growth, with several projects ranging from office buildings to shopping malls (new and expansion projects), and integrated tourism complexes (ITCs). Major public construction infrastructure projects will also drive the sector s expansion, which will contribute much to the government s long -term economic diversification plan. Oman s building and construction sector is seen to remain robust and to continue its growth across the region, with an expected compound average growth rate (CAGR) of 11.3 per cent between 2013 and Between 2014 and 2019, it is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 7.6 per cent. (Alpen Capital) The sector s rapid levels of growth will be driven and sustained by new projects, especially coming from the tourism, transport and logistics segments, which are having a direct impact on construction. 3 CURRENT AND UPCOMING PROJECTS IN OMAN MUSCAT AND SALALAH AIRPORT PROJECT The project involves the major expansion of the Muscat and Salalah airports. Muscat International Airport will consist of a construction of a new control tower and data center, a passenger terminal building, and a cargo building. Salalah International Airport will involve the construction of a new terminal building, expanding the length of the runway, and addition of a cargo building. Combined Project Cost: US$ 5.2 billion AL MOUJ MUSCAT Oman s first integrated tourism complex (ITC), which includes 4,000 residential properties, four hotels, 120 retail outlets consisting of international cafes, restaurants and shops, office buildings, an18-hole golf course, 400-berth marina, and parks. It is expected to be completed in Project Cost: US$3.5 billion DUQM BEACH RESORT PROJECT A tourism, residential and commercial development project in Duqm that will be built on a 45-hectare land. The project includes a five-star and a four-star hotel, restaurants and entertainment precincts, residential dwellings, an international school and commercial space housing offices and retail stores. The first phase will be devoted to the establishment of the infrastructure for the development, tourism, and other commercial activities, along with residential units. Project Cost: US$ 1.29 billion DUQM MEGA TOURISM COMPLEX A major tourism complex in Duqm on an area of 741,000 square meters that includes 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels, a mall, residential complexes, entertainment center, water theme park, and other tourist services and facilities. 4 CURRENT AND UPCOMING PROJECTS IN OMAN SARAYA BANDAR JISSAH PROJECT An integrated tourism complex that comprises 398 hilltop villas, stylish townhouses, duplexes and luxury apartments spread across five residential zones, a beachfront, recreational club, and a landscaped park on a 2.2-million square kilometer land and a high point of 250 meters above sea level. Project Cost: US$ 600 million INTEGRATED LIGHT INDUSTRIES CITY Oman s first integrated light industries park covering 250,000 square meters that will host 2,200 workshops and exhibition halls for building materials and automobiles, 400 offices and 1,800 residential units for workers, hypermarkets, restaurants and hospitals. It is scheduled to be completed in mid Project Cost: US$ 260 million CITY WALK A downtown city commercial complex that will serve the capital city of Muscat. Its plan includes an administrative tower and a luxury shopping mall, in addition to a five-star hotel with a capacity of 270 guest rooms. AS SODAH ISLAND A hotel development project planned to be one of Oman s most exclusive projects to be built on a surface area of 1 million square meters, located off the southern coast of Oman. It will include a five-star boutique hotel with 32 rooms consisting of 20 one-bedroom pavilions, 10 twobedroom villas and two 5-bedroom villas. The start of construction is expected in 2016 and the hotel is expected to be operational by Project Cost: TBA 4
