Message from the President I trust all members had an enjoyable festive season with friends and family. With the NEW YEAR now well underway we can focus on the business of running VWDCQ and deciding on the direction YOU as members and the owners of the club want to travel. January s committee meeting has been held and I have been very impressed with the level of commitment and enthusiasm shown by your elected representatives. For example there was a lot of debate regarding the website and its relevance, membership it s demographic and how we can appeal to the broader group of VW owners and enthusiasts. We look forward to input from members on these issues and the direction the club should take. We can also look forward to some unique social gatherings and events. We are looking forward to carrying on the excellent work of the hard working out going committee and making 2016 a very successful year. Noel Dore VWDCQ President Did you know A rare 1960 VW Kombi Samba sold at auction in Melbourne last year for $202,000! The 23-window Kombi was a step-through T2 Deluxe Microbus with a Golde folding roof and, after a five-year restoration, set a new auction record in Australia that far exceeded the estimated pre-auction price guide by Shannons.
Mt Cotton Hillclimb - Sunday 31 January woman to break the throttle cable in the club car 5 men to fix the throttle cable in the club car 1 new participant 1 new spectator 12 club members = A great day out! From the perspective of the first-time participant (Chelsea) I decided to take part in the Come and Try day after reading about it in the last club newsletter. The day is designed to get people involved in motor sport in a safe and controlled environment.
After our safety talk, each participant was assigned an instructor who walked us newbies around the one kilometre track. While the instructor gave us tips like when to break around the circuit, I was lucky enough to have Dave S volunteer to walk alongside me and give me tips specific to our club car. Everyone needs a Dave S! This was the first time I had ever driven the club car, having only ever turned on the engine while it was on the back of the club car trailer. Baptism of fire! I drove twice around the circuit with an instructor (compulsory) and the third time I took Dave S with me. At the same time that he told me to floor it I discovered I had no accelerator! He had to reverse it back to the pits and I walked the lonely walk back. The two Dave s nursed the car back to where the club members were set up and along with Ian, Noel and Wayne they set to work to fix the problem. A short time later I was back out on the track and loving my last two solo rounds. I will definitely participate again. My favourite part of the day: My last race because I felt it was my best and I had confidence driving the car. The menfolk fixing the car for me after I broke it.
From the perspective of the first-time spectator (Michelle) Hearing the word hillclimb conjured up thoughts of a dusty dirt track and comparisons with the Dakar Rally. The reality was an open bitumen track and plenty of space for cars and shade tents as well as a partly-shaded terraced viewing area with food and drinks available. It doesn t matter if you don t have a family member competing just go along and support your club members. It was a great day out! My favourite part of the day: The afternoon session the Test and Tune where experienced drivers attempt to clock their best times. Chelsea and Michelle Mills

Social Secretary Report Hi all, my name is Andrew Todd and I m taking over all the good work Anita has done as Social Secretary for the drivers club. A little about myself, I have owned a Volkswagen Beetle since 1994, my first car that I purchased off my flat mate for just $500. At the time it was just a car but over the years I have grown to appreciate the Beetle and its Kool appeal. My first teaching job in Mackay saw me driving the Beetle every holiday break 1100kms to Brisbane, it never missed a beat but was scary with a 1200 motor. It s part of the family and I enjoy driving the car, as it sparks interest and conversations everywhere I go. As social secretary I hope to promote our club with enjoyable events such as club drives in and around Brisbane, attendance to other club events/rallies/sports racing and workshop days at various club members.
Much will stay the same but with new ideas and enthusiasm. However the social side of things in this club can only be a success if members make an effort to join in and make it what it is. I look forward to seeing you all at club social events this year with plenty of laughs and camaraderie to be had. Cheers, Andrew Todd Social Secretary

SPORTING CAPTAIN'S REPORT Come & Try/Test & Tune Day, Mt Cotton 31 st January, Come & Try: This event was well attended by an enthusiastic group of spectator/members, which included a few new faces and a couple of older ones. The first female club member to drive the Fasty around Mt Cotton, none other than our intrepid club Treasurer Chelsea Mills, had a marvelous first drive, if the width of her grin is any indication. After a couple of laps with an instructor on board, (and one aborted lap due to a mechanical issue in the Fasty), Chelsea amazed by completing a solo lap in around 72 seconds! In a strange car and being unused to the track, this time shows that Chelsea is a natural! Well done, Chelsea! Test & Tune: In spite of some extreme temperatures during the day, and a short downpour in the early afternoon, those members who tried out their cars, showed some very promising efforts. The first runs in the wet were interesting to say the least, and the Fasty embarrassed by completely losing power, electricals and completely stopping due to a battery issue. After a few minutes retightening some bolts (and sweating a few kilos) Wayne Ferguson and Ian Dalgliesh had the Fasty up and running once more. Club members who participated included Club President Noel Dore in the Red Beetle, Grahame Rumballe in the yellow VWMA Mk1 Golf, Ian Dalgliesh in the VWDCQ Fasty. (and Jan Bucifal in a new vehicle which does not have VW badges, sadly!)
Club members who were in attendance but not participating were Michelle Mills, Kelly Stephenson, David Olsen, Steph Leahy, Greg Turnham, Craig Hughes, and Wayne Ferguson. The amazing Dave Sidery sacrificed a much needed day off, to help out as an instructor, and contributed greatly to Chelsea's positive first day at Mt Cotton, Thank You Dave! The next sporting event scheduled is the first round of Hillclimb s for 2016 on 27 th /28 th February, at Mt Cotton. Ian Dalgliesh, Sporting Captain
