1 Institution of Civil Engineers, Hong Kong Association Chairman s Report -17 Dear Members, It has been an honour and pleasure to serve as Chairman of Institution of Civil Engineers, Hong Kong Association (ICE HKA) for the Session to Continuing with the success of previous years, this session was another eventful and exciting one. It has been a great privilege to work with the ambitious ICE HKA, and the regional support team. During this session, there were 96 number of ICE Hong Kong events, with another 25 events where ICE HKA was a supporting organisation. The total number of participants in these events was about 6,000. These events are summarised in Appendix A. These activities and events have been organised by the various sub-committees including: Annual Dinner: Derrick Pang and Wing Law Annual Conference: Robin Sham, Ken Ho, Alan Cheng and Carrie Cheung Caring Engineering: James DB Chen and Cecilia Law Civil Engineering Outreach: Carrie Cheung Delegation: Francis Kung and Trevor Chung ICE 200 Planning: Ken Ho, Carrie Cheung, CM Lee Knowledge: Carlos Lam and Alan Cheng : Wing Law, Cecilia Law and Alan Cheng Public Voice: Josiah Leung, Eva Kong and Louis Wong Shaping Hong Kong: Eric Li, CM Lee, Jacky Wu and Louis Wong Technical Seminars: Trevor Chung Technical Visits: Cecil Cheng Graduates and Students (G&S): Henry Tong For the G&S events, please refer to Graduates and Students Division Chairman s Report for Session - 17 ( Paper-2017.pdf) New Events The ICE HKA has three new events this session with the aim of increasing outreach to our members, families and the public. 10,000 Steps Challenge 10,000 Steps Challenge was a charity event which was successfully carried out from 12 January 2017 to 13 Page 2 of 7

3 February There are two objectives for this charity event. It was to raise fund for the ICE Caring Engineering projects and to foster a heathy life style by having 10,000 steps and 8 glasses of beverage per day. I am glad to report that there were 18 organizations with 243 participants joined this events and raised HK$172,242 for the ICE Caring Engineering. With the contributions from our ICE members and friends, it makes the future ICE Caring Engineering projects even more meaningful. Family Visit to T-Park The Networking subcommittee and Site Visit subcommittee jointly organized a family visit to T-Park. It was the first family event organized by ICE HKA. The aim of this event was to showcase to family members the importance of engineering and infrastructure to the society. ICE Board Game Design Competition Civil engineering is all about helping people and shaping the world. Civil engineers are to make people s lives much easier. However, these statements are not widely understood by the society. In order to promote our profession as well as encourage our next generation to join the industry, we need to reach out to general public to explain what a civil engineer does and how we transform people s lives. We decided to organize an ICE board game design competition and plan to mass produce the winning board game as a civil engineering promotional and education tool. A briefing session for the design competition was carried out on 11 March 2017 and the design submission deadline will be on 30 June Major Events Delegation Continuing with last year s One Belt One Road delegation to China, this year we visited one of the Belt and Road countries, Malaysia, in December. With the assistance of ICE Malaysia, we had opportunities to meet the Institution of Engineers Malaysia and engineers and students in Kuala Lumpur. We also visited one of the major infrastructure developments in Kuala Lumpur, Klang Valley MRT and other infrastructures in Kuala Lumpur. Presidential Visit It was our honour to have ICE President Professor Tim Broyd visited Hong Kong from 11 to 14 January He delivered his speech on Engineering a Digital Future and met members and guests at the President Reception. During his visit, we also met key local influencers, decision-makers, university research team and visited the Hong Kong Express Rail West Kowloon Terminus project. In addition, ICE HKA and Construction Industry Council HK jointly organised an Innovations and Digital Technology Forum, which served as a platform for high-level exchange and in-depth discussion by industry stakeholders on the application of innovative technology and digital engineering. It also provided an opportunity to benchmark Hong Kong s expertise in the use of cutting-edge and emerging technology against that in the UK, and to tap into the latest insights of the UK construction industry s thought leader. 17 subject experts were invited to this focus discussion and positive feedback were received. 4 Brunel International Lecture An interactive Brunel International Lecture named "From Risk to Resilience: Practice Made Perfect?" was conducted in February Eelco H. Dykstra MD, Executive Chairman of Daily Impact Emergency Management provided attendees with a unique and region-specific perspective on emergency management. Annual Conference Our Annual Conference was also themed around the One Belt One Road, named Strengthening Competence and Competitiveness for Internationalisation of Hong Kong s Construction Industry was held on 28 April 2017 with 269 participants attending. It is our great honour to have Mr Eric MA, JP, the Secretary for Development, HKSAR Government and Mr Roger Venables, Former President of the City & Guilds College Association to be our local and overseas keynote speakers. The conference covered well-balanced topics from contractor s, professional services and client s prospectives, on legal risks and market opportunities and was well received by the audiences. ICE 200 The ICE was formed on 2nd January Thus, in 2018 the Institution will celebrate its bicentenary. In this session, ICE 200 Planning subcommittee was set up to plan our programme ahead. A business plan had been submitted to ICE headquarters. Organising committees have been formed and preparation works are in progress. Financial Situation The Financial Report prepared by the Honorary Treasurer, Mr Louis Wong, was audited by our Honorary Auditors Mr Kenneth Lau and Dr John Luk on 12 May The balance sheet as at 31 December showed a stable and healthy financial situation.
