3 PRESIDENTS REPORT NUMBER 49 As the changing times for Rotary become a reality the attached note from our District governor announcing the charter of our first E-Club is of no surprise but makes for some exciting times ahead in the organization. OUR FIRST E-CLUB IS CHARTERED This is just the icing on the cake for all of us this year! The ROTARY E-CLUB OF NEXTGEN, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA has been chartered as of June 1, This is only the second E-Club chartered in Australia so it will always be a salient historical feature in the history of our District. The Charter President will be Rick Jewson and the Secretary will be Chris Lloyd. I urge you all to check out their new website: E-Clubs are different in many ways from regular Rotary clubs and I am sure you will be surprised when you see the kinds of things that they are doing. DISTRICT CHANGEOVER LUNCH Hosted by the Rotary Club of Hope Island the district changeover lunch will be held at Sanctuary Cove country club on Sunday 1 st July at 12.30pm. Any member interested in attending please contact Jim Hawkins or myself and we will make necessary arrangements. Cost is $35 per head. New Member Following inductions some information about new members will be included in Rotarlight to allow all members of the club to better know the history of our new members in a timely manner. To-day we feature history of Nasser Kaviani. Inducted into the club on the 5 th June Nasser has a very proud Rotary history and will be an asset to our club. Read on. Mr Nasser Kaviani Information, Communication Technology Specialist Nasser Kaviani is a senior ICT specialist and an Agricultural Engineering professional with experience in Information and Knowledge management, technical leadership, capacity building, and training in New Zealand, Samoa, Kiribati Islands, Papua New Guinea and Iran. He has been a member of the International Rotary club for over 10 years and been awarded the popular Paul Harris medal for the service to youth development in Papua New Guinea. Nasser was born in Iran, completed his schooling and university in Agricultural Engineering and worked as Managing Director of a major government farming corporation before moving to New Zealand more than 30 years

4 ago. After completing his post graduate degree in Agricultural Engineering and a degree in the Information Technology in New Zealand he worked: as a scientist at Lincoln University carrying research in the Agricultural Engineering and Mechanisation for 9 years carrying research in agricultural Machinery and Mechanization; as an ICT specialist with NZ ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for 3 years assisting and training farm advisers with their Information Management ; as an ICT specialist and trainer with NZ Massey University for 14 years establishing online and web based teaching for the university and training university lecturers in the use of these systems. Nasser was an active member of the Palmerston North Toastmasters International for 14 years and achieved the TM s Able Toast Master status. With this he assisted a number of people with their communication and leadership skills to improve their personal and work performance. Later on he established the PNG s first Toast Masters club called the PNG Garamot and trained a large number of youth in public speaking, leadership and communication skills as part of his Rotary service to youth. Some of these youth have carried these skills to their current high profile professional positions around the world. Life was too easy in NZ and madness took over in 2000 when Nasser and his wife Nayer decided to go to PNG where they could provide technical assistance and service to the community while they could also test both their patience and endurance! Nasser worked as an ICT and Knowledge Management Adviser to the Papua New Guinea government on behalf of the Australian government AusAID for over 11 years. His main work involved developing ICT infrastructure for PNG government agencies (Justice, Lands, Transport and National Research Institute) and building local staff capacity to operate and maintain these facilities. In PNG sustainability of services and facilities are the main indicator of success and Nasser is proud to know that what he has assisted to build is still up and running! He receives regular s from those he has worked with and assisted, and he is still supporting them in their work and daily struggles in a very challenging environment. Nasser joined Port Moresby Rotary Club about 10 years ago and during this time his service was mostly involved with running RYLA, design/development of POMRC website, Sergeant at Arms, club treasurer and any other duties that needed to be done. His work with RYLA earned POMRC a lot of positive publicities in the PNG news media. Nasser and Nayer married 34 years ago and have two children both university graduates and successful in their occupations in Australia and overseas. They have one very sweet 2-year old grand-son called Zavier. Nasser has travelled extensively around the world and has family, friends and professional contacts all over the world. Nasser is a keen swimmer and loves all sports to do with water! He loves biking, walks around the parks, canoeing on the waters of Clear Island, and is hoping to buy a boat for fishing. He also is a keen beekeeper, potter, and cook without following any specific recipe. Reading, meeting people, having family and friends around and watching a good wholesome movie are his favourites. His long term plan is to see more of this great country with its vast and amazing natural resources and people. Nasser is currently residing in the Clear Island Waters in the GC and is working as an independent ICT specialist. President s Report Number 50 Rotaract Club. During this past year the board have been investigating the possibility of sponsoring a Rotaract club in Broadbeach. At our club dinner on Tuesday I informed members of a letter received from an existing member of a Rotaract club interested in forming a club in Broadbeach. Her experience and enthusiasm will certainly make the sponsorship an easy task for our incoming board. Peter Gowans the club Director for New Generations on the incoming board will be following up for future discussions. Meanwhile I am including in this report some basic information on Rotaract for those not familiar. Aside from mentoring our younger generation Rotaract provides us with a bridge to potential young members. What is Rotaract? Rotaract is a club for anyone aged between 18 and 30 years of age. Rotaract is a community service, social and self development club. It is apolitical, has no religious connections and is a non-profit organisation. (money raised is donated to causes of the Club s choice) Rotaractors meet regularly to plan and participate in social and community service activities. Rotaract Clubs are sponsored by Rotary Clubs or Cluster groups, but are responsible for developing their own program. Rotaract is a worldwide organisation with interaction between local, national and

5 overseas clubs creating an opportunity for meeting new friends everywhere. Each club belongs to a Rotary District. The Purpose of Rotaract Each Rotaract Club is chartered with the aim to develop responsible citizens who will perform to high standards in their working life and their community involvements. Members are prepared to help others in the local and wider community at the same time gaining skills and understanding through their efforts Guest Speaker 12 June 2012 Steve Holland My life as a photographer Steve gave us an insight into his early ambitions, mentoring and development as a professional photographer and also the technical development of the equipment used. The technical progress of the equipment, particularly the camera has been enormous during his career, from the manual to the motor driven, from film to digital, with many different camera options. It became clear that Steve s preference throughout was the Nikon brand, with cost from around $8,000 to currently around $25,000 per unit no box Brownies here. During his career Steve has had many opportunities to capture images of many V.I.P.s of sport, politics and the media. Steve showed us a DVD of some of his most famous, and one has to say exciting shots quite spectacular, sdaly he missed out on the shot of a streaker leaping the stumps at a test match. This was a very interesting and illuminating talk by the son of Dick Holland, not without some fame himself. Guest Speaker 19 June 2012 Chris Thomsen & Marilyn Bee Highlights of the Carnarvon Gorge Escapade On the 6 th June away the intrepid travellers went---well 19 on the 36 seater hired bus--and Pres. Elect. James and the lovely Pam--on their own set of wheels!! Confidence in the helmsmen!! In time, the controls of the Bus had to be labelled! John bee---he had magic moments. Who pranged the bus?? Not the front, but the back--- Chris accused Kevin-- Kevin blamed Chris while Vickie attempted to tell the truth. To Roma---Carnarvon---Toowoomba--and home, 4 nights away. The Mine Host at Roma would not open his grog shop--even 2 hours early for the travellers. A bloke was found in Ros's` bed Try the tright door next time. Tina`s laced fruit cake --helped the party along. Not having been there--the pictures of the gorge are reminiscent of the Kanimbla Valley or The Gross Valley----even Wolgan Valley. All in the Blue Mountains, spectacular scenery. Marilyn`s Helicopter at the Gorge was a big hit--colourful scenery to enjoy. Tina waxed lyrical with comparisons to the Helicopter ride. (censored) The Gorge resort played host-- Then the Balloon Cave complete with aboriginal hand paintings in red ochre, waterfalls, moss gardens, lots to see. Look!--There is a dog wood tree--- Silly, You Can Tell by its Bark!! Someone always falls into the water--eh Chris? Imported Can-Can Girls--and a recomposed ( or decomposed) Beach Boys Theme---while Brian demonstrated his culinary master ship, by producing first class steaks. Toowoomba Golf Club seemed a logical stop over-- Cannot believe that Dr. Dennis found the aisles in the bus wide enough to cut a rug. John Bee`s orations on points of local geological interest and also botanical observations--a highlight. Marilyn produced a Magic Book, Graham produced his Mandolin and Flute. Brian stopped the traffic-- with his rendition of-"old Man River!" Results of the `Photo competition were censored---as was John Bee s "Toasting Fork"--later perhaps. Marilyn and Chris scored a Rotary Glass each! A fun night.
