Founded in, Adelaide is now a modern, well established city, noted for its lush parklands, festivals and churches. TWO WELLS (off highway) (approx. population ) So named because of two natural wells which served as watering points for Aboriginals and early settlers in the area. T WAKEFIELD (approx. population ) Situated near the northern tip of St. Vincent Gulf, ort Wakefield has grown into an important service town for motorists travelling to Yorke eninsula and the northern reaches of the state. COUNTY TAVESED The road traverses generally flat countryside given over to wheat and grazing properties. After crossing the iver Light, the small townships of Lower Light, Dublin and Windsor are passed. Access is also provided to coastal areas on the Gulf, offering good fishing and crabbing. The original settlement of Solomontown now lies in the shadow of the more recent township, developed in the s. Initially a port for agricultural produce, the discovery of silver and lead at Broken ill saw the development of suitable port and smelting facilities. AWKE (approx. population ) awker was once a stop on the famous Ghan rail journey but flash flooding made the trip unreliable and a new line was constructed further to the west. AACILNA A tiny settlement with a famous pub, arachilna was a station on the original Ghan railway until the new line was opened in 9, some distance to the west. LEIG CEEK (approx. population ) A purpose built town providing facilities for employees and their families associated with the nearby coalfield. Coal is sent south from Leigh Creek by rail to the huge ort Augusta power stations, which supply much of South Australia s electricity. A lookout on the access road to the coalfield provides a spectacular view of the massive open cut mine. COLEY Originally a rail town, Copley is a popular watering hole for locals from nearby Leigh Creek and travellers heading to Arkaroola in the Flinders anges. INTS OF INTEEST The Flinders anges, in their present form, show the tremendous erosion which has taken place over countless years leaving a hard crystalline surface rich in metallic ores. AKAOOLA (Mt. ainter Sanctuary) The area was earmarked for pastoral development as early as. After many chequered years, it settled down to serious progress in 9, when two brothers named Greenwood took it over. In 9 it was purchased by eg and Griselda Sprigg. eg Sprigg, a former geologist, saw a unique opportunity to retain its unspoilt character as a privately owned sanctuary.
