Founded in, Adelaide is now a modern, well established city, noted for its lush parklands, festivals and churches. TWO WELLS (off highway) (approx. population ) So named because of two natural wells which served as watering points for Aboriginals and early settlers in the area. T WAKEFIELD (approx. population ) Situated near the northern tip of St. Vincent Gulf, ort Wakefield has grown into an important service town for motorists travelling to Yorke eninsula and the northern reaches of the state. COUNTY TAVESED The road traverses generally flat countryside given over to wheat and grazing properties. After crossing the iver Light, the small townships of Lower Light, Dublin and Windsor are passed. Access is also provided to coastal areas on the Gulf, offering good fishing and crabbing. CYSTAL BOOK (approx. population,) Named in by explorer Edward John Eyre after the water course located on the town s northern outskirts. A service centre for the surrounding sheep grazing and cropping interests. Many of the town s original buildings remain intact. T IIE (approx. population,) Established in, ort irie was South Australia s first provincial city. The original settlement of Solomontown now lies in the shadow of the more recent township, developed in the s. Initially a port for agricultural produce, the discovery of silver and lead at Broken ill saw the development of suitable port and smelting facilities. The town now provides facilities for the surrounding agricultural interests and acts as a base for travellers exploring the southern and central Flinders anges. AWKE (approx. population ) awker was once a stop on the famous Ghan rail journey but flash flooding made the trip unreliable and a new line was constructed further to the west. AACILNA A tiny settlement with a famous pub, arachilna was a station on the original Ghan railway until the new line was opened in, some distance to the west. LEIG CEEK (approx. population ) A purpose built town providing facilities for employees and their families associated with the nearby coalfield. Coal is sent south from Leigh Creek by rail to the huge ort Augusta power stations, which supply much of South Australia s electricity. A lookout on the access road to the coalfield provides a spectacular view of the massive open cut mine. COLEY Originally a rail town, Copley is a popular watering hole for locals from nearby Leigh Creek and travellers heading to Arkaroola in the Flinders anges. INTS OF INTEEST The Flinders anges, in their present form, show the tremendous erosion which has taken place over countless years leaving a hard crystalline surface rich in metallic ores. LYNDUST Like most of the settlements en route, Lyndhurst was a rail stop on the old Ghan line. It now provides fuel, accommodation and supplies to travellers heading up the Strzelecki and Oodnadatta Tracks. MAEE With its imposing heritage listed hotel rising above the salt bush flats, Marree is the starting point for the legendary Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. It was the major break-ofgauge station on the original Ghan rail journey to Alice Springs, until, when the new line was opened to the west. COUNTY TAVESED This section passes through undulating pastoral country with a few rocky hills near Leigh Creek. Open plains between Farina and Marree. BIDSVILLE (approx. population ) A few kilometres over the Queensland border, the town had its origin in a store built in by obert Frew. e suggested the name Birdsville because of the variety of bird life in the area. By the population numbered. Today, with a much reduced population, the town has become an Australian icon, and each year in September thousands flock to the Birdsville race meeting.
