1 Adelaide to Canberra via Sturt Hwy The RAA maintains some 300 strip maps covering all major routes of Australia. They are available from RAA Offi ces and are free to members. Strip maps are designed to assist drivers by showing distances, roadside features and town facilities on a simple flip-over style map, which can also be used in reverse. These maps are not drawn to scale. Strip Map Features: Cumulative Distances These are provided for both directions of travel and can be matched to the car s odometers for a ready reference. Intermediate Distances These distances provide for some localised perspective of scale. Town Facilities Hotels, motels, post offices, caravan parks, fuel (in remote areas). 2 INTRODUCTION This itinerary has been prepared to assist you on your trip. Please check your speedometer against stated distances during the first few kilometres of the tour. Few speedometers register exactly the same over any appreciable distance, and any discrepancy should be allowed for. The RAA trusts that your journey will be rewarding, safe and pleasant. Please drive carefully and ensure rest stops are frequently utilised. EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE If possible telephone for assistance however if no telephone is available, complete the slip below and ask a passing motorist to hand it in to the nearest Auto Club Service Depot. Please note that replacement parts may not be easily obtained when they are needed. Avoid delays - always carry spare fan belts and spare radiator hoses. N.B : Free Emergency Road Service is available to trailers and caravans up to 2 tonnes gross weight, towed by members, on production of your membership card, both in South Australia and interstate. Your membership number should be quoted when calling for service and card presented upon arrival of the service person, otherwise a fee will be charged. NOTE: Full reciprocity exists regrading the use of driving licences between ALL States and Territories of the Commonweath for driving cars registered in such States and Territories, but the current licence must be carried by the driver at all times. Travellers from South Australia visiting any other State or Territory may circulate freely as it is not necessary to observe any formalities in regard to registration, insurance etc., either at the border or elsewhere. (Note - Where commercial or other vehicles are used for carrying goods for hire or reward, enquiries should be made in advance as they may be subject to payment of fees and other conditions by the Transport Authorities in each State.) AFFILIATED MOTORING ORGANISATIONS IN OTHER STATES Membership of the RAA is particularly valuable in connection with interstate touring. The Association is affiliated with automobile organisations throughout Australia, and members are entitled to reciprocal service from these organisations*. (Such service does not extend to the sale of petrol, oil, spare parts, parking facilities, maintenance repairs or car washing, etc.) Members are advised to carry their membership card with them as proof of their membership status. Failure to do so may result in difficulty in securing service. ADELAIDE - GAWLER 37 kilometres Routes A1 & A20 Main North Rd ADELAIDE (approx. population 1,040,720) Situated on the banks of the Torrens and capital of South Australia, Adelaide is renowned for its town planning by Col. William Light who is rightly referred to as the founder and father of Adelaide. Founded in 1836, Adelaide is now a modern, well established city, noted for its lush parklands, festivals and churches. ELIZABETH Situated 26 km north of Adelaide, this satellite town was established in 1954 by the South Australian Housing Trust. A housing venture without parallel in post-war Australia, the population within the area is still increasing. GAWLER (approx. population 20,000) Proclaimed on January 31 st 1839, Gawler is South Australia s first country town. It was laid out by Colonel William Light and named after the second Governor of South Australia, Lieut.- Colonel George Gawler. Gawler is now the centre of commerce for pastoral, wine growing and light industries and is recognised as one of the major equestrian centres in Australia. RAA PILOT Pick up point as indicated. 5 H PO PO H CP PO H PO H M PO H M CP PO H M CP RAA District Office H PO H PO PO H PO H M CP RAA District Office Stockwell North Para Murray PO H M CP GAWLER - BLANCHETOWN 94 kilometres Route A20 GAWLER (approx. population 20,000) The town s official date of birth is January 31, 1839, making it South Australia s first country town. Gawler was laid out by Colonel William Light and named after the second Governor of South Australia, Lieut.-Colonel George Gawler. Gawler is now the centre of commerce for pastoral, wine growing and light industries and is recognised as one of the major equestrian centres in Australia. From Gawler, two alternative routes are available: Via the : this route skirts the Barossa Valley, passing through farm lands and vineyards before joining up with the Barossa Valley Highway north of Nuriootpa. Via the Barossa Valley Highway: this route winds through the rich wine growing properties of the Barossa Valley, one of Australia s largest wine producing areas reminiscent of its European heritage. The Barossa Valley Highway rejoins the north at Nuriootpa. BLANCHETOWN (approx. population 230) Blanchetown evolved as a riverbank loading centre, established in 1855 and named after Lady Blanche MacDonnell, the Governor s wife. When a railway link was built to Morgan, much of the trade was siphoned from Blanchetown so the town ceased to expand. Near Blanchetown, the crosses the Murray by bridge. Downstream of the bridge is Lock No 1, the first of a system of six locks throughout the land region.

6 CP Wachtels Lagoon BLANCHETOWN - KINGSTON-ON-MURRAY 76 kilometres Route A20 BLANCHETOWN (approx. population 230) Blanchetown evolved as a riverbank loading centre, established in 1855 and named after Lady Blanche MacDonnell, the Governor s wife. When a railway link was built to Morgan, much of the trade was siphoned from Blanchetown so the town ceased to expand. Near Blanchetown, the crosses the Murray by bridge. Downstream of the bridge is Lock No 1, the first of a system of six locks throughout the land region. WAIKERIE (approx. population 1,740) The Waikerie district is the largest citrus growing area in Australia, with the Waikerie Co-operative Producers Ltd. having the largest packing sheds in the Southern Hemisphere. Established in 1894, Waikerie is commonly believed to have derived its name from the Aboriginal word for the rain moth. The town is also known for its world renowned gliding conditions. KINGSTON-ON-MURRAY A small settlement with primary industries of citrus growing, orchards and vineyards. Local industries include fruit drying and packing. PO H CP Murray

Local industries include fruit drying and packing. BARMERA (approx. pop. 1,930) The youngest of the land s irrigation towns, Barmera took its name from an Aboriginal word meaning water-place. Situated on the shores of Lake Bonney, Barmera is known for its dried and fresh fruit industry. In November, 1964, Donald Campbell s Bluebird achieved the Australian water speed record of 216 mph on Lake Bonney. BERRI (approx. pop.4,010) From its beginnings as a sheep station in 1910, Berri has grown into a prominent fruit growing area as well as the administrative and industrial centre of the land. Home of the largest single winery and distillery in Australia, Berri obtained its name from the Aboriginal words Berri Berri which mean big bend in the river. RENMARK (approx. pop. 4,340) Australia s oldest irrigation settlement, being founded in 1887, Renmark takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning Red Mud. The surrounding orchards of Renmark are where some of Australia s finest citrus fruits, particularly oranges, are grown as well as stone fruits for drying and canning.

The surrounding orchards of Renmark are where some of Australia s finest citrus fruits, particularly oranges, are grown as well as stone fruits for drying and canning. CULLULLERAINE A small settlement on the shores of Lake Cullulleraine which is popular for boating, skiing and swimming. MILDURA (approx. population 30,020) Mildura, an Aboriginal word meaning Red Earth, is the capital of the vast Sunraysia irrigation area. This region covers nearly 25,000 hectares and supports about 35,000 people, producing more than 80% of Victoria s dried fruits and over half of the State s citrus fruits. Mildura today is a flourishing city with wide treelined streets and avenues plus many attractive parks and gardens. TIME ZONE Advance Clocks 30 minutes travelling East. ROBINVALE (approx. population 2,220) Robin Cuttle, the son of early settler Herbert Cuttle, was killed in air combat over France during World War 1 and the town was named in his honour. Robinvale developed rapidly after World War 2 under the soldier settlement scheme and is now the centre of a major fruit and wine producing region. An unusual attraction is a windmill that is reputed to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. COUNTRY TRAVERSED Mainly level terrain. Pastoral and crop growing region with more intensive horticultural activities in the Mildura and Euston areas.

10 Bungah BALRANALD - HAY 131 kilometres Route 20 BALRANALD (approx. population 1,220) Located on the, the town is the commercial centre for the surrounding pastoral lands. The region is mostly used for sheep grazing, although wheat and cattle add to local production. HAY(approx. population 2,630) Situated on the, Hay is one of Australia s premier wool growing areas. Its Memorial High School attracts students from all parts of the ina and many regional public bodies are headquartered here. Its Memorial High School attracts students from all parts of the ina and many regional public bodies are headquartered here. It was the first inland town in NSW to boast a permanent reticulated water supply. During WW2 Hay was the site of 3 camps housing prisoners of war and internees. An Interpretive Centre covering this period has been established in the historic railway building on Murray St. Standing at the intersection of three highways, the Sturt, Cobb and Mid-Western, the town is an important commercial centre and has good tourist facilities. NARRANDERA (approx. population 3,960) One of the earliest settled towns in the ina, Narrandera is now a busy commercial centre, with wide tree-lined streets. It caters for a wealthy and productive surrounding area, the main pursuits being wheat and wool growing. COUNTRY TRAVERSED The country encountered on this journey is mainly flat to undulating, with light timber growth, given over to cattle and sheep grazing and cropping.

12 Marshalls Sandy NARRANDERA - WAGGA WAGGA 97 kilometres Route 20 NARRANDERA (approx. population 3,960) One of the earliest settled towns in the ina, Narrandera is now a busy commercial centre, with wide tree-lined streets. It caters for a wealthy and productive surrounding area, the main pursuits being wheat and wool growing. R Poisoned Waterholes PO Bullenbung Gillenbah WAGGA WAGGA (approx. population 46,740) The largest city in inland NSW, Wagga Wagga is the commercial centre for an extensive agricultural region. Known as the garden city of the south it is also the support centre for the nearby Kapooka Army Base, the RAAF base at Forest Hill and the 640 hectare Charles Sturt University campus. COUNTRY TRAVERSED Mainly level terrain with undulating sections near Wagga Wagga. Pastoral country mixed with native forest.

13 Jones Tarcutta Hillas Mates Gully Creek Coreinbob WAGGA WAGGA - GUNDAGAI 81 kilometres Routes 20 & 31 Sturt & Hume Hwys WAGGA WAGGA (approx. population 46,740) The largest city in inland NSW, Wagga Wagga is the commercial centre for an extensive agricultural region. Known as the garden city of the south it is also the support centre for the nearby Kapooka Army Base, the RAAF base at Forest Hill and the 640 hectare Charles Sturt University campus. GUNDAGAI (approx. population 2,000) On the banks of the, best known for the Dog on the Tucker Box (about 8km north), is the commercial centre of a highly productive pastoral and agricultural district. The Gundagai Visitor Centre is the home of Frank Rusconi s Marble Masterpiece, a cathedralin-miniature which took 28 years of spare time to build. Rusconi also sculpted the Tuckerbox dog as a monument to pioneer teamsters and their dogs. The 7 km by-pass of Gundagai includes a 1143 metre bridge over the. GUNDAGAI - YASS 102 kilometres Route 31 Hume Highway GUNDAGAI (approx. population 2,000) North of town is a bronze statue of the Dog on the Tuckerbox, sculpted by Frank Rusconi in honour of a poem allegedly written by a teamster in the mid 1800s. Frank Rusconi s more remarkable work is a 21,000 piece miniature marble cathedral which is on display at the Visitor Centre. YASS (approx. population 4,910) The town has developed into a busy centre for the sheep farming and stud breeding activities of the region. Hamilton Hume, the first European in the area, is buried in the local cemetery and his old residence, Cooma Cottage, still stands. COUNTRY TRAVERSED Undulating to hilly farmland. Bitumen

15 PO Ginninderra Lake Burley Griffin Halls Gooromon Ponds Little Bedulluck YASS - CANBERRA 57 kilometres Route 25 Barton Highway CANBERRA (approx. pop. 322,040) The National Capital is picturesquely set on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. The city is situated 580 metres above sea level and temperatures range from below freezing point in winter to an occasional 40 degrees in summer. Among Canberra s most popular attractions are Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, National Library, Royal Mint, Telstra Tower and Australian National University. Canberra and Region Visitor Centre, Northbourne Avenue, Canberra, can give you full details. MURRUMBATEMAN (approx. population 1,760) The centre of a cool climate wine district. YASS (approx. population 5,330) The town has developed into a busy centre for the sheep farming and stud breeding activities of the region.
