The town was proclaimed a city in 19 and today is a community which depends mainly on the mining industry, pastoralism and tourism. Broken Hill is the centre of the West Darling astoral industry which constitutes a total area of approximately 16 million hectares. Although the city is connected by rail to both Sydney and Adelaide, practically all of its commercial interests are with South Australia. Broken Hill, and nearby Silverton, are home to many of Australia s famous bush artists. WILCANNIA (approx. population 6) Once a busy river port for paddle steamers that plied the Darling and Murray ivers with wares from as far afield as Adelaide. It was also a centre for miners going north to the gold workings and rich opal fields of White Cliffs.
