March certainly has been a great month on the ski slopes and XC trails. I know I may have said it before, but it is always a good feeling for me to walk into the Hunter Lodge on any day of the week and see other Trailsweepers to ski with. A big thank you to Dale Z for organizing the TSSC ski race team for the March 24 NJSSC President s Cup at Hunter and to all the club members who participated! Because of work commitments, I couldn t make it but I heard it was a great bluebird day for racing and skiing. The course was a fun, dual course in great condition and all our club racers did very well! Congratulations to Trevor Bailey, Yuri Kobziar, Sharon Kenny, and Diana Ziegenfelder who placed in the top three in their respective A, B, and C categories and to everyone for contributing points to the overall team competition. As of this writing, the results were not finalized for the overall Cup team winner because some mistakes were discovered in the calculation of our team points leading to our top two racers results not being added to the team total, which if corrected, would lead to TSSC, currently in 2 nd place, winning the Cup again! May 5 th is our annual Spring Banquet and Awards. Marla and Diana have been working hard to ensure we will have a great night of food and dancing. Send your check in soon to reserve your seat at this fun party! On April 10 th club elections will be held. After several years of serving in officer positions for the club, I have decided not to continue as President. I plan to stay very involved in the club and support it in other ways. Looking back, it has been a great year and a lot of fun for me. In addition to leading the club as its President, I was happy that I could run the Rams Horn Hike, Mini Golf and Dinner, and co-lead the day trip to Tanglewood. Hopefully this summer we will have these outings on the schedule again. Many members stepped up to run outings and events my thanks to all of you. Thank you also to our board, officers, and our Trail Sweepings editor, Daniel Desmedt, for a job well done this year. And a special thank you to Jackie for her support and encouragement this past year. In closing, I hope the membership continues to support club activities. In two years, our club will be 70 years old! I am looking forward to, as I hope you all will, to celebrating our longevity with another great anniversary party! See you on the trail, Jean president@trailsweepers.org President s Corner Mailing address TSSC, PO Box 3061 Kingston, NY (Continue on page 3)

3 Board News By Jackie Olivet The Board of Directors met on February 27 and March 20. In February, it sanctioned the kayaking program. It also continued a review of the club s insurance policies with a report by Jim T. It received its first report from its Nominating Committee chaired by Mark B for the club s April elections. Finally, the Board reviewed, discussed, and made changes to a first draft, prepared by Jackie O, the Board s chair, of proposed Constitutional and Bylaw changes initially requested by a number of Board members. This was a continuation of an ongoing months long review by the Board of looking at the club s current Constitution and Bylaws to: update when these documents could be amended by the membership so that there was more flexibility; review the current dues structure, in place for over 11 years; change the make up of the Board and reduce the total number on it to reflect the club s current needs; and change how the Board can vote at times, adding electronic means of voting. On March 20, it spent considerable time exploring our need for candidates for our April elections and reviewing and discussing a second draft of proposed Constitutional and Bylaw changes, including voting to submit each proposed change to the membership at possibly the second meeting of April or July, as required in the current Constitution. As my time as Administrative VP/Chair of the Board comes to an end on April 10, I want to take this opportunity of thanking the Board members I have had the pleasure of working with this past year, Nick, Jim, Rudy, Kathie, Dave, Mark, Rob, and Diana! I have so appreciated their commitment in serving the club in such a thoughtful, conscientious way, as they fulfilled their responsibilities. I want to thank Jean, my wife, for her patience this past year, as I have served in this position, and Marla, Dale, and Dave, as our Exec VP, Treasurer, and Secretary. I have enjoyed the opportunity of serving the club as its Admin VP, as we are approaching in just two years TSSC s 70 th anniversary!! Yes, it s another excuse for holding a great anniversary party! Many of us remember the club s great 60 th party, which Dale and Diana Z chaired! Not many social/sports minded clubs can point to such a continuous, successful existence! As I am approaching my 40 years of being a continuous TSSC member, with wonderful lifelong friendships and memories, I urge members to keep the club going with its wonderful spirit of fellowship and friendships! (as she drops the mike! See you on April 10) Jackie, Admin VP/Chair of Board CLUB ELECTIONS Tuesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Tony s WE NEED YOU! Come Vote & Consider Serving the Club! We need a quorum & keeping with tradition, refreshments will be provided! Club elections for all officers and three Board members will be held on Tuesday, April 10, a regular club meeting night. Officer positions are: President; Executive Vice President; Administrative Vice President (who also serves as Chair of the Board); Treasurer; and Secretary. Officers serve for one year and Board members terms are for two years. Nominations, which started March 27, will continue April 10 immediately prior to the elections. Board members whose terms do not expire in 2018 comprise the club s nominating committee. This year s Nominating Committee consists of: Mark Bailey, Chair; Kathie Quick; Dave Wise and Rob Fletcher. Any member interested in serving in one of these positions for the coming year should contact one of the members of the Nominating Committee or any current officer or Board member! If someone is interested but will not be able to be at the meeting on April 10, you do not need to be present to be nominated or elected so long as you indicate to one of the Committee members or me, chair of the Board, your definite interest in being nominated and serving, if elected. To all club members please consider getting more involved in the coming year and serving in one of these positions! TSSC has been ongoing since the 1940s and formally organized since the 1950s as a vital and dynamic sports, outdoor, and social club in the Hudson Valley only because members have been willing to get involved in one of these capacities! Without members willing to serve in this way, the club will not be able to sustain itself. Hope to see you April 10! At the March 27 meeting, the nominations so far were: President: Vivian Griffin Executive Vice President: Rob Fletcher Admin VP: Open Treasurer: Dale Ziegenfelder Secretary: Dave Cardall Board: Skip Alford, Mike Griffin, Sharon Kenny and Steve Wingard. Jackie, Admin VP/Chair of Board

5 Trailsweepers Win NJSSC President s Race (we think) Trailsweepers got lucky and managed to get some racers into scoring places, despite having a light team on the hill. For the women, Millie Bailey took third in women s A division. Sharon Kenny and Diana Ziegenfelder placed second in women s B and C divisions. Yuri Kobziar won overall, and Tyler Bailey came in second. Trailsweeper men took seven out of the top ten places. Dale Ziegenfelder and Rob Fetcher filled out the scoring for the men. The top four men and top three women counted for the team score. The scoring system used was the NASTAR Team system, which takes the racers handicaps and uses their age to compute their points. The system s intent is to help level the playing field for older skiers. The overall finish placing was based on NASTAR points, then the finish field was divided into A, B, and C divisions. Within each division, the top skier received 30 President s Race points, the second, 29, and so on. When the results were announced, Ramapo was announced as the winner with 195 points and Trailsweepers with 191. After examining the printout, it appeared that Yuri and Tyler had been omitted from the President s scoring. The initial results are marked to show the corrections, but we ll have to wait for the final review.
