1 November 2009 Newsletter Edwards Airshow October was a busy month for Airshows. Starting with the Miramar Airshow featured last month next was the Edwards Airshow. I had never attended and BGen Yeager was going to open the show in an F-16 breaking the sound barrier so we gathered a crew and went for it. Ed and Wayne joined us at Burbank Airport. We picked them up in the C-45 (photos above). Mark Bauer, Bundini, Greg Colyer, Mario and Mellissa, Dan Dulworth, and Claude Genest joined us for the weekend. The F-3 mock up was there as well as everything the USAF was flying, as well as the NASA Space Shuttle carrying 747, and Space Ship One. A great one day show, and great hospitality by the USAF. Departing Burbank Airport along the Golden State Freeway. F-35 Mockup; Mark Bauer s T-28 in China Lake markings 1

The German Air Force has a training squadron at Holloman and invited us out to Holloman at the Luke Airshow. Bundini was able to hook us all up with rooms, cars, and fuel for the trip. Patrick Josh, Janet and my Dad went along. We flew from Gillespie to Tucson International for our first fuel stop and saw Matt who is busy working for Flight Safety and Wright Flight a non profit that gives kids rides on the weekends for maintaining good grades in school. After lunch in Tucson we set out for El Paso Texas, and then turned North along the VFR corridor to Alamogordo, NM arriving there after about a hour flight. (Photo below of us landing at Alamogordo). Bundini and the USAF Media Relations folks met us and arranged for our cars and lodging at Holloman. The next day we offered Media / Sponsor rides to the USAF and took up 2 plane loads of USAF guests. I was able to talk Holloman into letting us fly into the Restricted areas for a tour of White Sands National Park and to see the 13 mile (Continued on page 6) 4

6 Holloman AFB Airshow (Continued from page 4) Holloman Airshow long rocket sled track at Holloman for testing ejection seats. (The previous page shows our ad in this month s EAA Vintage Aircraft magazine). The photo below shows Patrick, Jim and Janet and Jim s Dad at Alamogordo (Josh not shown is off getting the rental car at Enterprise thanks Josh!). The next photo (above right) shows Patrick talking to Matt Younkin from Arkansas just after doing his always impressive acrobatic routine in his BE-18 / C-45 (stock by the way the same as ours). Unfortunately Matt was injured in a plane crash near his home last weekend, and will probably be even worse after his wife (who is do to deliver their first child) gets a hold of him. Holloman was one of the best shows we have been to thanks to Bundini and the German AF who are great hosts. After we left Holloman Sunday am, we headed East and over the mountains to Roswell NM to visit the UFO museum and find out the truth about the UFO s there. 6
7 Patrick and I ferrying the plane from Alamogordo to Holloman, toured White Sands and stumbled upon the back up Space Shuttle Runway (23) in the middle of the gypsum sand fields. Sledding in sand below. I was surprised to see that the USAF has operational V- 22 Osprey s and had one on display. Holloman is home to the F-22 with the 49th FW off Major Dick Bong P-38 Fame. 7
8 Patrick and Josh tried their piloting skills in the Lockheed Martin F-22 simulator that they had on hand at Holloman in the O Club. Patrick shown here about to engage Josh and my Dad look on. Snapped this F-4 photo for Dave Payte and Dee Conger who flew them in the USAF and USN. They still have them flying at Holloman! (as drones unfortunately). Below the German Air Force has Josh, Janet and Patrick about to snort snuff and then do some shots (bad news) in their makeshift Beer Garden on the flight line. Then off to the O Club even though we could barely walk (they mentioned the beer garden was only happy hour ). Next photo is of a nice B-25 that was on hand and giving media rides as well. Nice shot of the sunset coming back into Arizona on Sunday, and the real sunset over Gila Bend before we made the turn West then direct to Gillespie landing around 830pm. 8
