EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During 2009, the Cows Create Careers projet was delivered to 167 shools and 5,845 students aross 20 dairying regions in Australia. The projet was initiated by the Strzeleki Lions Club in Gippsland during The Gardiner Foundation provided seed funding in 2005 to expand the projet to all dairying regions of Vitoria. In 2006, Dairy Australia agreed to support the growth of the projet to other States of Australia. This year, Cows Create Careers beame National by the implementation of projets in Western Australia and Queensland. The growth of Cows Create Careers is evidene of the projets suess whih has seen the number of students involved multiply by 40 over the last 5 years. Shool survey information shows that the reah of the projet is greater than the students partiipating in the projet and inludes the entire shool ommunity, whih is estimated to be 33,400 students and teahers. This year, National Projet Managers delivered an overview of the projet and projet aomplishments on stage at the Australian Dairy Conferene. This prompted the Australian Dairy Conferene board to provide funding to ensure that the projet ould ontinue to be delivered throughout Australia. In May 2009, the Cows Create Careers projet was showased at the Agriultural Teahers Assoiation of South Australia onferene providing the dairy industry with a signifiant opportunity to expand on this promotion and utilise the Agriultural Teahers Assoiation National network. The Cows Create Careers National Projet Managers were nominated by a teaher at Ballarat Grammar Shool for the Australian Rural Outbak Award, this resulted in a ertifiate and semi-finalist position (top 10) for the Agriultural and Rural Development Award. The media overage ontinues to be signifiant and equates to a print media value of $87,872 with a irulation of 878,443 readers. In addition, there have been numerous radio interviews with an estimated air time value of $20,000. All of the partiipating Cows Create Careers shools have inluded an artile in their shool newsletter whih is a great way to share a positive, eduational dairy story with parents. A reent google internet searh using australia 2009 media ows reate areers as searh riteria resulted in 4,029 linkages. I 2

Eduational publiations have supported the suess and aomplishments of the projet throughout the ountry. The projet has ontinued to reeive exeptional support from farmers and industry advoates with approximately 835 volunteer hours being provided, equating to a dollar value of $33, % of the farmer and industry advoates are aged between years. The top two reasons for their partiipation is 1) they believe that the dairy industry needs to be involved in shools to promote agriultural areer pathways and 2) they believe that the projet is great for the positive image of the dairy industry. As part of the Cows Create Careers implementation in shools a teaher entrane survey was onduted. 22% of teahers interviewed were able to highlight a work experiene or dairy areer pathway onnetion as a result of the projet. This question was answered by teahers who had partiipated in the projet during previous years. Student survey results showed 940 students were interested in a dairy industry work experiene onnetion after the projet, with the top two areas of interest being 1) veterinary pathways and 2) dairy pathways. At the ompletion of the Cows Create Careers projet a teaher feedbak survey was onduted. Information reeived inluded feedbak about the support provided from projet managers, industry advoates and dairy farmers. The perentages below returned either a very good or exellent response: % projet managers 87.60% industry advoates 87.30% dairy farmers These results showase a positive example to shools and students about the quality of the people that the dairy industry attrats. 97% of the teahers and shools involved in the projet would like to be involved again in The Cows Create Careers projet onluded in eah region with a presentation and awards day where students, teahers and parents were introdued to training providers suh as National Centre for Dairy Eduation Australia. These presentation days were attended by 3,055 people aross Australia. Commerial ompanies have ontinued to support the growth of the projet aross the ountry with a ommerial estimate of $68,470 of supplies being provided to shools. In addition, dairy produts have been donated by milk and manufaturing ompanies to students attending these presentation days. The 2010 Australian Dairy Conferene has offered Cows Create Careers an exiting opportunity to showase leading edge students on a National stage. Shools and representing students from eah State will make a presentation whih inludes a 75 seond advertisement on why the best and brightest should hoose a areer in dairy. This is a fabulous opportunity for shools and students to platform the exeptional talent and ability that they may bring to the dairy industry. National Projet Managers ontinue to reeive numerous responses from shools in both dairying and non dairying regions to be involved in the projet and as a onsequene have begun disussions with Dairy Australia (Manufaturing) department. The 2010 plans are to initiate a seond module of Cows Create Careers. This module will be implemented in Food Siene and Tehnology lasses using the suessful framework that has already been tested with the Cows Create Careers - Agriultural / Siene module. The Cows Create Careers projet is a testament of the dediation and support provided by a large team of people who ontinue to share their passion and enthusiasm with students. This shared passion will be the driving fore behind a future generation of dairy industry entrants. 3 I

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS Cows Create Careers has undertaken extensive evaluation in relation to the planned outomes of the projet. The planned outomes of the Cows Create Careers projet are; Students, teahers and parents are more aware of the variety of areers that the dairy industry has to offer (inluding servie provision, manufaturing, dairy farming and researh siene). More students enter a dairy eduation pathway and dairy areer. Farmers and industry advoates inrease their skills in ommuniation and mentorship. The industry builds a better network and understanding of when areer deisions are made by students. Good news stories and positive media is irulated about the dairy industry. Objetives Farmers and industry advoates inrease their industry partiipation and skills eg. ommuniation, understanding of the dairy eduation setor, mentorship and onfidene in taking on other roles in the industry. The Cows Create Careers projet has reorded data from partiipating farmers and advoates involved in the projet. The growth rate of the Cows Create Careers projet has resulted from the involvement of a dediated and large network of industry advoates and dairy farmers aross Australia. During 2009, approximately 145 dairy farmers and 160 industry advoates have been involved in the delivery of the Cows Create Careers projet to 167 seondary shools. 80% of these volunteers are aged between years. The retention rate of farmers and industry advoates who have ontinued to partiipate in the projet over onseutive years is greater than 90%. The top three reasons for their involvement are 1) they believe that the dairy industry needs to be involved in shools to promote agriultural areer pathways 2) they believe that the projet is great for the positive image of the dairy industry and 3) they enjoy working with and sharing knowledge with young people in the industry. 835 volunteer hours have been ontributed from dairy farmers and industry advoates resulting in an in-kind ontribution of $33,400. I 4

68% of the shools surveyed indiated an extra urriulum onnetion with their farmer or industry advoate as a result of the projet, adding a further $13,600 of in-kind value to the projet. 91% of the industry advoates and dairy farmers involved in the projet stated that they were either really omfortable or omfortable with their involvement in the projet. 73% of those surveyed have indiated that they are more likely to be involved in future dairy ativities as a result of their involvement in the Cows Create Careers projet. Dairy Australia onduted a stakeholder traking researh survey in The table below shows the perentage of dairy farmers who were aware of the Cows Create Careers projet from eah State. Cows Create Region Sample size (number) Careers awareness (%) DairyTAS 26* 44% Murray Dairy % WestVi Dairy 80 37% GippsDairy % Subtropial Dairy 32 46% DairyNSW 27* 69% Western Dairy 35 43% DairySA 20* 77% *Sample size <30, results indiative only Regional networks build apaity to address people issues eg. help with workfore planning. The Cows Create Careers projet has reorded data from eah partiipating shool to support workfore planning initiatives in the dairy industry. The Cows Create Careers projet urriulum was developed so that it ould be introdued to shools and had varying urriulum onnetions. The projet omplies with urrent National and/or State learning standards. 58% of the shools surveyed implemented Cows Create Careers as an agriultural/hortiultural eletive, with a further 21% as a siene eletive. The next favourable eletive was 15% whih saw the projet implemented aross the urriulum in shools. The 2009 survey results reorded that 75% of the shools surveyed have an agriultural/hortiultural program. Further analysis of these statistis on a State basis would result in NSW having the largest agriultural/hortiultural opportunities in seondary shools for students. However, it is important to note that none of the shools (aross Australia) who implemented the Cows Create Careers projet in agriultural/hortiultural had dairy as part of their shool urriulum. Dairy still has some work to do, with a National average of 5-10% of students surveyed looking at agriulture as a possible areer pathway. The highest response reorded in any individual shool was 40%. Cows Create Careers has a database of 940 students who are interested in a dairy industry work experiene onnetion. 5 I

The dairy industry better understands areer deisions and support proesses in shools. Aim is to better position Cows Create Careers offerings to students at a time when they are making deisions about areers and to better support the areer teahers with their needs. The Cows Create Careers projet has reorded data from eah partiipating shool to support the delivery of timely information to shools about areer and eduation opportunities for students. A areer advisor/teaher would on average onsult with between students per year, mostly between years 10 and 11. The majority of Queensland and Tasmania shools have a program where students are able to spend time with a areer onsultant (a areer planning eletive). It is expeted that this program will ease to exist in Tasmania during 2010 due to hange in government poliies. The timing, length of work experiene and age an vary from shool to shool. The data gathered through this projet attempts to ollet this information for eah partiipating region. Anedotal feedbak ontinues to illustrate a low base of knowledge from new Cows Create Careers students about dairy areer and eduation pathways. The Dairy Australia Work Experiene program was launhed in 2009 and inludes an enthusiasti group of industry advoates and dairy farmers in the South West of Vitoria. This work experiene program is utilising the data olleted during the 2009 Cows Create Careers projet and antiipates the first work experiene onnetions to happen in April, A pilot in Tasmania will follow. Teahers and students have a better knowledge about the dairy industry and teahers, students, parents and areers advisors are more aware about areer and eduation pathways in the dairy industry (both farming, servie setor and manufaturing). Survey results showed that 75% of students start to make subjet hoies in year 8 and 9. In most shools these subjet seletions are made during Term 3 and 4 of the year prior. 10% of the shools surveyed offer subjet hoies (limited) as early as year 7. In 86% of the shools surveyed, work experiene takes plae in year 10 and 11 and most ommonly ours in the seond semester. A further 11% partiipate in work experiene in year 9 and in some shools work experiene is offered as early as year 8. The Cows Create Careers projet has reorded data from eah partiipating shool to determine if the projet is having an influene on the dairy industry knowledge base of the teahers, students, parents and areer advisors. National Projet Managers have ontinued to fous on inreasing the knowledge and pereption of dairying in shools to a greater audiene than the teahers and students. It is believed that by inreasing the knowledge of the shool ommunity, areers advisors and parents about the dairy industry that this will in turn provide students with a better and more informed soure of information and support whilst they are hoosing their areer pathways. The 2009 Cows Create Careers survey results indiated a hange in attitude of 51% in students, 23% in teahers and 22% in parents whih is an inrease on the 2008 results. I 6

Cows Create Careers projet with the aim to inrease the flow through of positive information and knowledge to a broader audiene. These presentation days were attended by 3,055 people aross Australia. Teahers, parents and areers teahers promote opportunities in dairying and influene students. The Cows Create Careers projet has reorded data from eah partiipating shool in relation to their inreased partiipation in promoting dairy in shools. 68% of the shools surveyed an identify an extra ativity through partiipating in the projet (outside the projet framework) with either the dairy farmer or industry advoate involved at their shool. It has been alulated that the Cows Create Careers projet enables the dairy industry to onnet with approximately 33,400 students and teahers who make-up the shool ommunity. A ontinued area of suess for the Cows Create Careers projet has been the exellent relationship that has been built with the Careers Advie Australia (CAA) network aross Australia. The CAA projet is funded by Federal Government and the organisation has the objetive to onnet industry and eduation (speifially year olds). The CAA is aross all industries. This projet model will be hanging in 2010, however the new model will still provide strong onnetions in relation to the Cows Create Careers projet model. The dairy industry has had a unique opportunity to build and strengthen relationships in shools by eduating the Careers Advie Australia (CAA) network over the past four years. By enouraging the hands on involvement of this organisation, the dairy industry has had a hane to build on the knowledge of this team. The benefit to the dairy industry is two-fold 1) it results in redued projet management osts in some regions and 2) it inreases the CAA knowledge about dairy and therefore inreases the hane of dairy being a disussion point with areers advisors in shools. Cows Create Careers has enouraged shools to use their shool newsletters as a platform to promote the projet and reate awareness about the dairy industry projet to a broader audiene ie. parents and ommunity. All shools involved in the projet published one or more stories in their shool newsletter with a number of shools providing weekly updates. 71% of the shools surveyed indiated that the interest in agriulture/hortiulture had grown in their shool as a result of the projet. A frequent omment of teahers is that the projet is benefiial, as the framework enourages students to not only partiipate in a pratial (hands-on) experiene, but also in the urriulum and researh that is required for the projet ompletion. Another ommon omment is about the students and their enthusiasm towards the projet. From a dairy point of view if the students are exited about the projet then it is more likely that they will share this exitement and energy with their parents a perfet send home message about dairy. 86% of the surveyed students indiated that they would tell their parents about the projet. 84% of shools surveyed indiated that there had been demand and growth within the shool environments of the projet. 97% of the teahers stated that they would be involved in the projet in An entrane survey was onduted and 22% of the teahers interviewed were able to highlight a work experiene or dairy areer pathway onnetion as a result of the projet. This question was answered by teahers who had partiipated in the projet during previous years. 7 I In 2009, areers advisors and parents were enouraged to attend the final presentation and awards day/s to onlude the

At the ompletion of the Cows Create Careers projet a teaher feedbak survey was onduted. Information reeived inluded feedbak about the support provided from projet managers, industry advoates and dairy farmers. The perentages below returned a very good or exellent response: % projet managers 87.60% industry advoates 87.30% dairy farmers Cows Create Careers has a database of 940 students who are interested in a dairy industry onnetion or work experiene. Students onsider a dairy industry areer (aspirations influened, beliefs and attitudes influened). An inreased number of people entering dairy industry employment and areers. The Cows Create Careers projet has reorded data from eah partiipating student on a number of topis both at the projet ommenement and after ompletion of the projet. Entry results were reorded for 2,977 students and exit results for 2,809 students aross Australia. National Projet Managers surveyed students about a number of areas in relation to the impat of the projet on students, suh as prior knowledge of the dairy industry, what is their ideal areer, how they viewed the dairy industry and were they interested in a areer in agriulture. 4.1% of the students who partiipated in Cows Create Careers live on a dairy farm. The survey results showed that there was an inrease of 38% in relation to students knowledge about areer pathways in the dairy industry and 29% in relation to where they would find information about dairy areer pathways. 78% of the students surveyed believed that the dairy industry had a lot of areer options, this resulted in a 22% inrease in student knowledge from the statistis taken at the start of the projet. 67% of the students surveyed believe that the projet would inrease the profile of the dairy industry, with 68% of these students indiating that they understood the signifiane of this industry to their loal region. This perentage demonstrated a 13% inrease in student understanding from the start to the end of the projet. Students were asked if they were interested in a areer in the dairy industry, 940 students indiated they would be interested. These students were asked to name their preferred areer pathway, the highest result reorded was veterinary siene pathways with 42% (400 students) indiating this as their preferred hoie, the seond highest result was dairyfarming/farming pathways whih resulted in 35% (337 students). The proess for delivery of Cows Create Careers is doumented; ommuniation strategy; projet logi; quality assurane; delivery apability et. The Cows Create Careers projet has developed a ompre-hensive planning spreadsheet that sets out proedures for the Regional Projet Managers. It provides these offiers with a quik glane guide and overview of milestones, timelines and ations required. Further work is underway with assistane from Pauline Brightling and Anne Hope from The People in Dairy to assist National Projet Managers to build on the existing ommuniation strategy. I 8

Leveraging of funds National Projet Managers ontinue to work with Regional Projet Managers and Exeutive Offiers (of RDPs) to leverage funds to support the projet. During 2009 funds were obtained from Toal College (NSW DPI), Mid Coast Learning, Australian Dairy Conferene, Vitor Harbor Rotary Club, North Coast Institute of Tafe, UDV Distrit Counil No. 2, ANZ, IMB Community Foundation, NSW Dairy Conferene, FP Ag, ABS, Berkefeld Family Dairying, National Foods, Dairyfarmers, Rural Finane, Mypolonga Traders, Goolwa Lions Club, Horizon Farming, Best-Fed. Other supporting sponsors inlude Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Assoiation, Dairyfarmers, National Foods, Cadbury, Betta Milk, Noro, Parmalat, IGA Mount Gambier and Apple and Pear Growers Assoiation in South Australia. FINAL PRESENTATION AND AWARDS DAYS The Cows Create Careers projet onludes with a final presentation and awards day in eah region. This provides the dairy industry with an opportunity to engage the students, highlight eduation and training pathways and leave students, teahers, industry advoates and dairy farmers with a feel good message about the dairy industry and its offerings. Dairy training providers have been able to showase areer pathways to students, teahers and parents. Guest speakers entertained audienes by sharing their dairying experienes. During 2009, approximately 3,055 students, teahers, industry advoates and dairy farmers attended the presentation days for eah of these regions. Stakeholders are onfident of the value of their investment in the proess All Projet Managers ontinue to maintain good relationships with stakeholders. The re-investment of these ompanies indiates the onfidene that they have in relation to their involvement in the projet. The retention rate of Cows Create Careers sponsors is greater than 95%. 9 I

MEDIA COVERAGE Objetives Community has a positive pereption of areers and eduation opportunities in the dairy industry. The Cows Create Careers projet has reeived extensive media overage during the 2009 season aross Australia. Cows Create Careers has reeived an estimate of $107,872 of publiity during the 2009 alendar year, with a print media irulation of 878,443 readers. In addition, Cows Create Careers news stories have been published in shool newsletters and a reent google internet searh using australia 2009 media ows reate areers as a searh riteria resulted in 4,029 linkages. 16 A SNAPSHOT The Cows Create Careers projet delivered on all the milestones and timelines that were set for the projet delivery aross Australia for the 2009 alendar year. The implementation of the projet in Queensland and Western Australia was a great suess and offiially delivered a National status to the ahievement of the Cows Create Careers projet. The 2009 year has seen an inreased involvement and introdution of new Regional Projet Managers in many States whih has resulted in a wider awareness and regional involvement in the projet. The projet has grown from 9 shools and 141 students in 2004 to 167 shools and 5,845 students in 2009, whih is a tribute to a ommitted dairy team of industry advoates and dairy farmers who are the fae of the projet in shools. National Projet Managers have started to see evidene in New South Wales and Queensland of other industries vying for a position in shools and the opportunity to talk to students, however at this stage the reah of these projets has not extended to the level of Cows Create Careers. There are many examples of students who have taken up either areers in dairy or dairy eduation pathways as a result of the projet.
