32 Worth knowing Choosing your wood-burning stove There is a huge hoie to pik from, but hoosing a wood-burning stove is not so simple. efore you deide, ask yourself the following five questions: 1. Where will you plae it? Is your wood-burning stove to be the primary soure of heating or will it just provide a osy fire-lit atmosphere in your home? The answer is ruial for your hoie of wood-burning stove. wood-burning stove s heat output is measured in kilowatts (kw). It is an expression of the amount of heat given out by a stove. s a rule of-thumb, 1 kw an warm up a 10-20m 2 room of average-height eiling (depending on the room s insulation). The value kw tested shows a stove s output has been tested in aordane with the European Committee for Standardisation s EN standard. 2. Radiation or onvetion? The majority of new stoves use onvetion, where air is irulated between an inner and outer steel mantle. When the air is heated, it rises and warms the room. The onvetional heat from a wood-burning stove warms evenly, but requires a stove to be plaed physially loser to the firewood than a radiating stove. 5. Combustion tehnique eta stove uniquely-designed fireboxes and air supply redue CO and harmful ombustion partiles to an absolute minimum. eta stoves use pre-heated ombustion air for a lean burn (blue arrow), i.e. the ombustion air is free-flowing and feeds ombustion without any resistane. The pre-heated tertiary air supply (green arrow) ombusts the remaining gases before the smoke vent up the himney: a ruial fator in environmentally-friendly ombustion. The warmed onvetion air (red arrow) flows aross the room, whih along with the infra-red heat from the glass front is what warms the room. This makes the stove s heat effiient and means you an enjoy looking at the flames of your fire sootfree. 3. Plate steel or ast iron? oth kinds of materials make exellent wood-burning stoves and reessed fireplaes. eta wood-burning stoves have doors and ast-iron bottom grates, so they remain tightly sealed and long-lasting. 4. Steel, glazed or soapstone? eta supplies steel or ast iron stoves. Cerami glaze, soapstone, enamel or hamotte options are available. The hoie of material is a matter of style and taste, though eah material has partiular harateristis. stove made entirely from steel or ast iron warms up faster than a glazed or soapstone stove. ut it also ools faster when the fire has gone out. Glazes and espeially soapstone take a little longer to warm up, but stay warm long after the fire has gone out. The slightly larger soapstone stoves stay warm for many hours and an easily keep a room or house nie and warm through the night, so you will not wake up old in the morning. 33 Installation You an of ourse install your new wood-burning stove or reessed fireplae yourself. ut in many instanes it would be benefiial to get help from the professionals, so you an be sure your installation funtions orretly and meets regulatory standards. Many dealers will gladly install your wood-burning stove or reessed fireplae for you. Remember to inform your loal ertified himney inspetor one your wood-burning stove is installed, so they an hek the installation and register you to reeive periodi himney-leaning. Chimney draft wood-burning stove or reessed fireplae is only part of the overall installation. There is no sense in buying the most modern and effiient wood-burning stove if your himney does not funtion orretly. The majority of modern wood-burning stoves and reessed fireplaes meet rigorous environmental standards. Your wood-burning stove will only work as it should when your himney is in full working order. Chek the data sheet of the wood-burning stove you have hosen, to see the type of himney draft required. If you have an old and worn himney, there are plenty of ways to renovate it. ave a hat with your dealer who an help. bad himney means you run the risk of soot and smoke esaping into the room when you open the door of your stove. Positioning your stove You have to onsider where you want your stove to stand in relation to walls and furniture. The data sheet of a wood-burning stove will show you the model s plaement speifiations. You should also hek the kind of floor you have. o you need a stove floor plate under or in front of your woodburning stove? ow to light your wood-burning stove 1 2 Stak small piees of wood aross one another. Plae a ouple of paraffin firelighters under the wood. 3 4 Make sure there is plenty of air so the flames are bright. 5 6 Light the firelighters and set the door in the stoking position, and fully open the ombustion air supply. Large flames mean the stove and himney will warm quikly and the fire will burn properly. One the stoking fire has redued to embers, you are ready for the next firing. Now you an use ordinary firewood. Close the door ompletely and fully open the ombustion air supply. 7 One the flames have taken hold, the air supply an be regulated to give the required amount of heat. 33

34 rying firewood ll types of wood an be used. The firewood should be hopped and left to dry for one-to-two years under a rain over, to ahieve a moisture ontent of approximately 18%. Remember, firewood absorbs some moisture during winter. ll types of wood have approximately the same alorifi value per kilogram. Oak and beeh are dense and therefore heavier, and so have a higher alorifi value per ubi meter. Fir tree is light and so has less alorifi value per ubi meter. Quik guide 1. The installation has to be orret/done by a professional 2. The himney has to be approved. n old-style briked himney with a 24 x 24 m opening annot be used. 3. Never use damp firewood or a damp stove. 4. Never burn milk artons, pressure-impregnated wood, magazines or newspapers. 5. Read the user instrutions. Stoking should take minutes to orretly warm up the stove and himney. 6. Then you an use the stove as normal. ut now use only seondary air/ombustion air and lose everything else: door, primary air, valve, ashpan, et., so that only air from the top of the door/ glass is used. 7. If glass panel and stones turn blak then there is insuffiient air. 8. Feed the fire often, with small amounts of firewood. If you feed too muh firewood into the fire, you will be inlined to turn the air supply right down, resulting in pollution. 9. Never leave the fire to burn overnight. It harms the environment as unombusted gases esape through the himney. Maintenane Wood-burning stove surfaes with a heat-resistant varnish: lean with a damp loth. If the varnish beomes damaged you an buy varnish in a spray an and repair the damage. Cleaning the glass If the wood is not suffiiently dry, the ombustion temperature will be too low. The wood will smoulder instead of burning, ausing soot to aumulate on the glass. If the glass has to be leaned, use ordinary window leaner or if needed, use speial glass leaner from a dealer. You an also remove the soot by rubbing ash around the glass with a piee of wet kithen roll. Repairing and leaning soapstone Soapstone is a naturally soft type of stone. You an repair srathes or surfae damage with fine P120 sandpaper, but you should be areful. irty surfaes (soot, grease, et.) should be leaned with water and mildly-aidi soap. the soap should be applied to the surfae - leave it for a ouple of minutes - wash the surfae with warm water - when the surfae is dry, if needed you an sand it down with fine sandpaper Combustion yle Unlike fossil fuels (oil, oal and gas) burning wood is CO 2 neutral and therefore does not add to the overall greenhouse gas effet. There is no differene in the amount of CO 2 released from a piee of burned firewood than a piee left to rot in a wood. s trees grow, they absorb CO 2 with help from the sun s energy, and unlike fossil fuels, only return the same amount of CO 2 that was absorbed, thus they do not ontribute to global warming or the greenhouse effet.
