Construction is expected to continue until 30 SEP / NZZC RNP AR Trial Within Christchurch CTA Effective:9NOV17to7NOV18 A 12-month RNP AR approach trial will commence within the Christchurch CTA from 9 NOV 17. The trial has been developed in conjunction with Airways New Zealand, Board of Airline Representatives New Zealand (BARNZ), and Christchurch International Airport Limited. RNP AR approaches use satellite-based navigation and vertical guidance to improve safety, reduce flight time, burn less fuel, emit less carbon dioxide and fly more quietly. These approaches will contribute to international aviation carbon dioxide emission reduction proposals, and are aligned with the Government s National Airspace and Air Navigation Plan (NAANP) as implemented by the New Southern Sky programme. Three RNP AR approach flight paths already operate at Christchurch Airport servicing the crossing runway (RWY 29), and three RNP AR approaches with associated standard arrival procedures (STARs) will be introduced for each of the two main runways (RWY 02/20). The trial will evaluate aircraft performance; airspace management; operational benefits, including time, distance, fuel and carbon emission savings; noise monitor results; and public feedback. An interim review of the trial will be carried out in May 2018, and adjustments may subsequently be made to RNP AR instrument flight procedures. Interested parties can learn more about the Christchurch RNP AR flight path trials and outcomes at 24/ NZZC New Plymouth AD Construction of New Terminal Effective: 1 FEB 18 The New Plymouth AD (NZNP) operator advises that construction has commenced on a new terminal to the immediate west of Terminal 1. 19 56/ NZZC New Plymouth Aerodrome Trial of Distance Based Longitudinal Separation for PBN Departures Effective: 24 MAY 18 Background Airways provides a Procedural Approach air traffic control service at a number of aerodromes, including New Plymouth. One control technique used to provide procedural service is Distance Based Longitudinal Separation. Depending on relative speeds separation distances are either 10 NM (D10) or 20 NM (D20). This separation standard is currently used between aircraft flying in a straight line to and from a NAVAID or waypoint. Following the implementation of PBN procedures this option has been largely removed, due to the nature of the SID/STAR turning profiles. In recognising the changing profiles resulting from PBN implementation Airways has investigated potential options for a PBN version of the D10/D20 separation, based on the proven existing separation, and taking account of the turns designed in PBN procedures. Trial Airways has CAA approval to conduct a trial under Part at New Plymouth, for PBN SIDs. The trial is planned to start 24 May 2018 and run for an initial period of 3 months. If the initial trial is successful, Airways will seek an expansion for the trial to include PBN STARs. The trial proposal is detailed and includes complex PANS OPS calculations to allow for turns; however, for operators the trial concept is straightforward: O Pilots flying a PBN SID from NZNP will be asked to report at a waypoint, or at a specified distance to a waypoint (this is the D10/D20 location). O Subsequent departing aircraft can then be cleared to take off. The aim of the trial is to reduce delays and increase efficiency whilst maintaining the same level of safety. If the trial results are acceptable to CAA, the intention is to seek approval for these separation standards to be applied at other procedural aerodromes.
