For long term strategic planning, specific detailed interconnection studies are often not possible or useful due to the longer timeframe considered and lack of knowledge about locations and size of future plants. Nonetheless, there has been a need to understand what the current, or expected, network can accommodate, in terms of either installed MW or the MW injection from utility scale or distributed renewables, or from the increase in load due to increased electrification. To address some of the challenges related to long-term transmission interconnection planning, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) developed a high-level screening tool to support utilities in developing strategic plans to accommodate increasing penetration of renewable generation while maintaining desired reliability levels. The tool is developed using used Siemens PTI PSS E transmission planning software and Python scripting language. Vikas Singhvi (Senior Technical Leader from EPRI) 5:00pm PSS MOD User Forum Lead by our PSS MOD customers; share your knowledge, experience, and feedback with fellow users and product experts. Joe Canterino (U.S. Software Business Lead) and Chuck DuBose (Senior Engineer,

Joe Hood and Greg Mahlum (Senior Engineer, Siemens PTI) 2:00pm User Presentation: Aggregate Impacts of DER on Bulk Power System Performance The North American electric power system is transforming to a resource mix that is integrating more Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The 2017 LTRA1 indicated that a penetration of DER continues across the North American footprint with an estimated addition of more than 26 GW of non-utility photovoltaic (PV) that will be added NERC-wide by Furthermore, the 2017 LTRA indicates that neglecting to monitor (model, plan, analyze, forecast, and observe) for higher levels of penetration of DER can lead to unexpected aggregated impacts(high penetration levels of DER) on areas of the BPS and begin to affect BPS operations. As a result, NERC is working with industry to develop a set of guidelines to assist in modeling and assessments such that owners/operators of the BPS can evaluate and model aggregate DER in the Bulk Power System (BPS). Mohamed Osman (Lead Engineer, System Analysis Department at NERC ) 2:30pm Break Foyer of Leon 3:00pm What s New & Upcoming in PSS ODMS Learn about the latest features implemented into PSS MOD and view live demonstrations. Highlighted new features include: New items in PSS ODMS v11.3: Model Management Window, Project/Scenario Life Cycle Attributes, Project/Scenario Import and Export, Case Browser, Configurable Analysis Engine Dimensioning, N-1 Contingency RAS/Protection Schemes, PSS E v34 Support, Enhanced Transformer Modeling. Gautam Bajracharya (Power Solutions Engineer, Siemens PTI) 3:30pm User Presentation: Updates on the PSCAD-PSS E Co- Simulation and Data Conversion Modules E-TRAN is a widely used translation tool to automatically generate PSCAD cases starting from PSS E power flow and dynamics data files. Co-simulation module and Parallel processing model are also part of the E-TRAN software, enhancing the E-TRAN capabilities. Recently, several new features were added to the E-TRAN software to automate the faults logics in transmission line/transformer subpages in the PSCAD circuit, to add CLOD type load models at the user specified locations to replace static loads and to automate the Chaminda Amarasinghe (Electranix) 1
12 generation of co-simulation cases starting from the PSS/E cases. During this presentation, these new E-TRAN features are discussed. 4:00pm User Forum Lead by our customers, the user forum gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the products or presented topics and provide your feedback. This will also include a live review of the ideas implemented into the PSS Ideas Portal throughout the UGM. This informal discussion will close out the 2018 U.S. User Technical Conference! All
