Introduction Dominik Wiener-Silva, Vice President Marketing & Sales, Lufthansa Technik Philippines Dear readers, We had quite a celebration in our facility recently when we broke ground for our third hangar, underlining Lufthansa Technik AG s further commitment to the country and Lufthansa Technik Philippines. This hangar is extra special as this means a boost in our capability in servicing the expanding range of Airbus models including the A380 (page 5). As we continue towards this path of further growth, we are increasing our reach to tap markets that present vast opportunities. The Middle East, which is projected to double its narrowbody and widebody fleets in this decade, offers huge potentials to LTP. Read about the major inroads that we have created towards establishing partnerships in the Middle East on pages 6-7. In this issue, you will also read about our successful efforts in increasing the diversity of our customers. For one, we have been successfully supporting customers of Lufthansa Technik s Total Technical Support TTS product, a prime example of which is Japan s Starflyer (page 4). Secondly, we have continued to gain the trust of more customers from all over and had in fact South American aircraft in our facility for heavy maintenance check at the same time (page 9). These successes and expansion would not have been possible without the recognition and trust of the customers in our expertise. We are sharing some of the recent approbation from our customers on page 3. With all these exciting developments, our editors were inspired to introduce further enhancements in Technilink. Big or small these improvements are meant to provide you with a more informative and pleasurable read. Sincerely yours, Dominik Wiener-Silva dws@ltp.com.ph FOUNDED IN the year 2000 as a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik AG and Philippine aviation service provider MacroAsia Corporation, Lufthansa Technik Philippines offers a wide range of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services to customers worldwide. 3 Line maintenance Asiana Airlines commends LTP Qantas is newest line maintenance customer Ten Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) line maintenance mechanics and an account executive from the Marketing & Sales department were recently recognized for their combined efforts in the excellent handling of an Asiana Airlines aircraft that was on ground (AOG) last May 1. The aircraft, an A321 flying a Kota Kinabalu to Incheon route, was diverted to Manila due to a fuel auto transfer hazard. The customer was pleased to have LTP respond immediately and efficiently despite May 1 being a holiday in the Philippines. In his letter of commendation to LTP, Keon Jung Kim, Asiana Airlines general manager of Maintenance Administration writes, As soon as [our] technicians arrived in Manila, the aircraft was perfectly prepared for inspection and [the LTP staff] involved did an excellent job on the aircraft along with our technicians. Therefore on behalf of Asiana Airlines, I would like to express sincere gratitude for your superb and timely cooperation. The commitment and dedication demonstrated by the team is a testament to LTP s drive to exceed customer expectations constantly in quality and turnaround time. Asiana Airlines is a line and base maintenance customer of LTP. JAL says thank you to LTP Japan Airlines (JAL) recently sent a letter of appreciation commending LTP line maintenance mechanics for their exemplary efforts during workaround checks for JAL. In a letter addressed to LTP foreign airlines terminal operations manager Roland Serrano, JAL maintenance manager Osamu Yoshida states, An LTP mechanic found that the electrical wire conduit guide was missing and detached from the right main landing gear of JA653J. He also reported it to the JAL staff promptly. As a result, the defect was repaired immediately, and the aircraft was able to depart on schedule. On a separate letter, Yoshida states, An LTP mechanic found a nail on the no. 5 wheel tire during a walkaround check in spite of dark conditions. He reported it immediately and the tire was changed due to air leak. Both mechanics were similarly recognized by LTP when they were conferred with the Small Wins Award during the recently concluded Crane Awards. Qantas Airways and Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) are expanding their existing collaboration. The flag carrier of Australia has chosen LTP to provide line maintenance services with Release to Service (RTS) for its Airbus A /300 starting June The aircraft, powered by CF6-80E1 engines, flies four times a week from Sydney to Manila and back. LTP is a long-time partner of Qantas Airways for base maintenance checks of its A330 fleet since LTP has also provided cabin reconfiguration and painting for Qantas and Qantas wholly owned low-fare carrier, Jetstar. Earlier this year, Jetstar has also signed up for line maintenance services for its Airbus A320/A321 with LTP. Qantas is the world s second oldest airline and Australia s largest domestic and international airline operator. The flying businesses of the Qantas Group operate under two major brands Qantas and Jetstar. Domestically, Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar operate around 5,600 flights a week serving 59 city and regional destinations in all states and mainland territories. The Group s network comprises 182 destinations in 44 countries, including Australia and those served by codeshare partner airlines. TechniLink 2nd Quarter

Customer Profile Luxe affairs: Compatibility with Starflyer s quality standards A Total Technical Support (TTS ) agreement inked between Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT) and Starflyer in 2007 had started a growing partnership between its Manila subsidiary, Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), and the Japanese airline. The TTS agreement covers maintenance, engineering, component services and base maintenance. True to its promise of being in close proximity to its customers, Lufthansa Technik has tapped LTP, its Asia-based subsidiary specializing in the Airbus family, to provide base maintenance services to Starflyer s Airbus A320 fleet. The first layover events proved to be significant for LTP as the company became the first and only foreign MRO firm and the first in the Lufthansa Technik Group to have been conferred a certificate of approval by the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB). The regulatory certification allows LTP to extend extensive support services, particularly that of airframe maintenance tasks on the Airbus A320 aircraft of a Japanese airline. Today, the airline continues to send more A320s from its fleet to LTP s hangar facility for scheduled maintenance events. LTP has completed 17 C-checks for Starflyer since it started sending its aircraft to Manila in Starflyer continues to be one of LTP s major customers in the A320 base maintenance segment. We are grateful for the unwavering trust the airline has for LTP as its partner in ensuring the safety and quality of flights for its passengers. We are looking forward to more business partnerships with one of Japan s best airlines today, says LTP president and CEO Bernhard Krueger-Sprengel. Starflyer is a low-cost, high quality airline based in Japan. It began its scheduled flight operations on March 16, The airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320s equipped with 144 passenger seats in an all-economy class cabin layout. It targets business travelers from the expansionary local industry who need these business flights to manage their trade and connection flights in the capital. Reliable support for Starflyer Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) successfully supported an A320 aircraft of Starflyer during an aircraft on ground (AOG) situation. The aircraft was given a one-time flight permit to Manila where LTP successfully performed a skin panel repair/replacement as well as additional maintenance tasks. The reason for the special layover was attributed to a bird strike on the aircraft s upper lateral skin panel. The prompt response to AOG situations, communication, and coordination between the LTP team and the customer, ensured Starflyer s aircraft to return swiftly to service within sixteen days. Starflyer is a fast-growing, value-based carrier and is one of the few airlines that fly Airbus aircraft in Japan. Since 2007, LTP has been providing maintenance services to Starflyer under the Total Technical Support (TTS ) agreement which the carrier signed with Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT). 5 News & Updates Focus Construction starts for new widebody hangar The newest hangar of Lufthansa Technik Philippines would allow the company to further build up its capability on the Airbus family. Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) has broken ground for the construction of a new aircraft hangar designed to meet the growing world demand for widebody aircraft maintenance and overhaul. The new hangar project in Manila represents a US$30-million investment and capacity expansion by LTP and is expected to boost its capability in servicing the growing range of Airbus models that includes the A320, the A330 and the A340. The proposed new hangar could also give LTP the option to accommodate the A380 aircraft which would allow the company to further build up its capability on the Airbus family. With a 8,448-square meter footprint, the new hangar will rise beside the existing four-bay hangar of Lufthansa Technik Philippines at the Ninoy International Airport complex. Upon completion, the facility will be capable of accommodating one widebody and two narrowbodies or four narrowbodies at any given time. MRO IT solution improves efficiencies Just as customers place their trust in Lufthansa Technik Philippines for quality aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, the same holds true for its capability in implementing TRAX, a comprehensive and fully integrated MRO software system, to help its customers achieve high efficiency. LTP channels its expertise from its long experience in using TRAX for almost every aspect in its operations from production, engineering, technical training, component, maintenance and engine shops, to finance. The company first introduced TRAX in its operations in Since then it has expanded its knowledge and competency on the software. By 2005, it obtained a memorandum of agreement with TRAX USA Corporation enabling LTP to be able to implement TRAX and as part of its consulting services, assist customers on its usage. Our expanding competency in TRAX enables us to offer this integrated MRO IT application system as a service to our customers to help them meet their business and regulatory compliance requirements, shares Dr. Roberto Asuncion, LTP vice president for IT. To date, LTP has played a key role in successfully helping local and international customers apply TRAX in their operations. Its local customers includes Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines, SeaAir and this year, Cebu Pacific and Zestair. Zestair has also recently signed up for base maintenance for its A320 aircraft in addition to TRAX implementation. LTP s IT team has Please continue on page 8 TechniLink 2nd Quarter

Focus: Middle East AOG support for Gulf Air Once again, LTP demonstrates its expertise in MRO services when it supported Gulf Air in an AOG situation Last February, Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) provided Aircraft on Ground (AOG) support to Gulf Air. An engine change on a Trent 700 was performed on one of its A330 aircraft that developed an oil leak during transit in Manila. The engine change was performed in the LTP hangar by a support team from the Aircraft Overhaul department and was released in time for a planned commercial flight. Gulf Air had to charter a freighter aircraft to bring in the replacement engine. Gulf Air, flag carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, flies to 45 international destinations in 28 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, including Manila, Philippines. Gulf Air has been LTP s base maintenance customer in 2006 and line maintenance customer in Sun rises in the Middle East With narrowbody and widebody fleets set to double this decade, the Middle East offers a large slice of pie for maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) players to partake. This remains easier said than done since the competition that Middle Eastern MROs present is hot as the dessert sun. Nevertheless, foreign MROs couldn t resist the allure and opportunities of the Middle East. Lufthansa Technik AG for many years now has developed partnerships with major operators in this region. Lufthansa Technik Philippines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik, also looks after Middle Eastern carriers which fly to the Philippines. LTP provides technical services to Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, Saudi Arabian Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Recently, Kuwait Airways joined LTP s roster of customers when it decided to establish a partnership with LTP. It is sending two of its A340 aircraft for heavy maintenance to Manila. LTP sends engineers, technicians and IT personnel to share its expertise with Middle Eastern operators and MROs. Etihad Airways and currently, NasTech in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are benefiting from the Filipinos expertise and world-renowned customer orientation. Indeed, the sun rises in the Middle East. LTP is more than keen on enjoying the sun s life-giving rays. 6 TechniLink 2nd Quarter 2011

Focus: Middle East Kuwait Airways sends A340s for heavy check, painting The airline is confident that this partnership will enable it to continue in providing safe and relliable flights Two A aircraft of Kuwait Airways are set to enter Lufthansa Technik Philippines hangar this May and September for heavy maintenance checks. In the agreement, the two A340s will undergo IL-checks and aircraft painting. The appointment of LTP is in line with Kuwait Airway s commitment to providing the finest service and comfort to passengers while continuing to rank safety as one of its highest priorities. Partnering with one of the leading providers of aircraft maintenance supports our commitment to maintaining global standards in flight operations. Together with LTP, we are confident that we will be able to continue to provide safe flights and at the same time ensure that our aircraft are operating in optimum condition, said Khalid Al-Hulail, Kuwait Airways engineering director. Dominik Wiener-Silva, LTP vice president for Marketing and Sales, said, We are very pleased to welcome Kuwait Airways, one of the most successful and enduring airlines in the Middle East, in our roster of base maintenance customers. We stand firm in our promise of providing top quality service delivered through fast turnaround times. We look forward to more years of fruitful partnership with them. Established in 1954, Kuwait Airways fleet now comprises three A s, three A s, five A Rs, four A s and two Boeing B777s, bringing the fleet to 17 aircraft that are equipped with the latest entertainment systems. Kuwait Airways aims to re-establish its network to reach more than 46 countries around the globe. In 1978, Kuwait Airways entered the widebody age by taking delivery of its first two B s, adding a third the following year. This expansion permitted Kuwait Airways to extend its network to New York to the west and Manila to the east. NASTech receives technical support from LTP Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) sent a group of nine personnel consisting of engineers, maintenance planners and a systems analyst for a one-year program provisioning technical support to NASTech. The agreement includes tasks on NASTech s TRAX maintenance software. The initial analysis and configuration on the software were done in December 2010 by LTP s TRAX administrator and key user. This was followed with full support by the team flown to Riyadh during the start of the year LTP continues its dedication to bring its expertise into the global field as the deployed group fulfills responsibilities around different areas of the business such as engineering, maintenance planning and production. Presently, they are also providing assistance in building TRAX codes and configurations as well as with establishing standards and quality processes in the use of the said maintenance software. LTP s former vice president for Technical Services, Rainer Conrads, is currently Lufthansa Technik AG s representative to NASTech. He takes in the position of executive director for the company. Lufthansa Technik provides engine and component maintenance services for the entire NAS fleet. NASTech, the new maintenance subsidiary of NAS, is building up capabilities for line and light base maintenance of narrowbody aircraft, especially for the Airbus A320 family. Lufthansa Technik is supporting the process with engineers and technical advisors. Based in the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, NASTech is part of National Air Services (NAS) group of companies. It is licensed by the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority (GACA) and Cayman Island Aviation Authority (CAACI) to perform light maintenance checks on single-aisle and business jet aircraft. 8 Base maintenance Strategic Airlines A320 undergoes bridging check Seen again within Lufthansa Technik Philippines hangar is Strategic Airlines, this time with its Airbus A320 aircraft. In this layover, a bridging check was successfully carried out for the Australian carrier at the start of the year s second quarter. The scheduled check for the aircraft provides a ground work for an LTP provides technical support to AirAsia A Lufthansa Technik Philippines technical support team comprising six mechanics and one engineer flew to Kuching, Malaysia from Manila to provide technical support for an AirAsia aircraft. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, had veered off the runway upon landing in Malaysia s Kuching Airport from Kuala Lumpur and sustained a damaged landing gear as it carried its passengers to safety. The team successfully led the removal of the landing gear despite obstacles such as working inside an unfinished hangar that housed the aircraft and not receiving the necessary tools earlier. Despite these, it took the team only a couple of days to complete the removal task. Following the successful removal of the landing gear, LTP mechanics turned over the aircraft to AirAsia. Airbus will perform further assessment and repair work on the aircraft. To date, LTP has a steadfast partnership with AirAsia s widebody affiliate AirAsia X, Malaysia s hugely successful long-haul, low-cost airline. The carrier has entrusted upcoming heavy check of the same aircraft type in June. We are delighted to see another Strategic aircraft in the facility as they entrust their maintenance needs to LTP. They form a big part of our growing airline network in Australia which presently includes big names like Qantas and Jetstar. We are looking forward to further building this relationship with one of Australia s newest international airlines today, says Ryan Cariaga, LTP Base Maintenance project manager. Strategic Airlines signed its first agreement with LTP in 2009 for a special layover involving painting tasks on its livery for its first Airbus A The Brisbane-based carrier was officially launched on the same year. It currently utilizes its fleet made up of A330 and A320 aircraft to operate regular services across six major city destinations, namely, Melbourne, Phuket, Brisbane, Perth, Bali, and Derby. a number of aircraft to LTP for MRO services including C-checks, a heavy maintenance check, several cabin retrofit and aircraft painting. From page 5 MRO IT solution improves efficiencies already begun its project to implement TRAX, provide project management, technical support and training for Zestair for the upcoming months. Since January of this year, LTP has been providing onsite TRAX systems administration services to NASTech in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In December 2010, IT held a special TRAX course for Aviation Concepts, an aviation consulting and management services company based in Guam. Following this successful seminar, a couple of LTP employees flew this April to Jetstar s office in Sydney, Australia to assist their employees on TRAX. TRAX implementation and training is part of LTP s consulting services and is a product of its developed expertise in the use of the system. Looking forward, LTP s IT group plans to expand their product and services portfolio. It will include creation of computerbased training (CBTs) modules for TRAX as an alternative to existing classroom-based training, development of wireless applications on mobile devices such as notebooks and Androidbased tablets, and programming specialized applications around TRAX to improve efficiency in managing and controlling particular functions such as production planning, man-hour capturing, materials management and reporting. 8 TechniLink 2nd Quarter 2011

LAN Airlines makes a comeback to LTP Sends A340 fleet for base and heavy maintenance Chile s LAN Airlines returns to Manila for the maintenance checks of its A340 fleet at the Lufthansa Technik Philippines facility, signifying the beginning of a long-term relationship between the two companies. Base maintenance In THE new agreement between Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) and LAN Airlines, LTP will be performing three heavy maintenance checks with one engine change and two lower C-checks with one landing gear replacement. The arrival of the first aircraft in May signals the start of the maintenance campaign for the airlines five A aircraft. Last year, LAN Airlines sent one of its A340s for base maintenance at LTP. The event was successfully concluded much to the satisfaction of LTP s first South American customer. It is our pleasure to welcome back LAN Airlines to our facility. With the longer scope of this partnership, we are confident that we can develop a more efficient work process with them that would result to a swifter delivery of high quality services, remarked Dominik Wiener-Silva, LTP marketing and sales vice president. LAN Airlines has been serving passenger and cargo clients for more than 82 years. Together with its subsidiaries, LAN Airlines currently operates 118 passenger airplanes while LAN Cargo and its subsidiaries have 13 freight planes. LAN Airlines utilizes its A340s to service its European and Oceana destinations. Bienvenido Aerolineas Argentinas! LTP performs heavy maintenance on A The arrival of an A340 aircraft bearing the Aerolineas Argentinas (ARG) livery added more Latin flavor to Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP). An Aerolineas Argentinas A at LTP is currently undergoing a 4C check, while in another maintenance bay a LAN Airlinesw A is going through a heavy maintenance check. The check on the A340, which shows Aerolineas Argentinas colors, was subcontracted to LTP by Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT) after an agreement between LHT and the aircraft leasing company AWAS was signed. This is also part of an existing lease deal between ARG and AWAS. The contract allowed LTP to obtain a new approval from Argentina s aviation authorizing body, La Administración Nacional de Aivación Civil (ANAC). We are definitely looking forward to more business from South America, says LTP sales manager Dino Santos. AWAS is one of the leading aircraft leasing companies serving markets in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific. Headquartered in Dublin, it has offices in New York, Miami and Singapore. AWAS current aircraft portfolio is on lease to over 90 airline companies in 44 countries. Aerolineas Argentinas is the flag carrier of Argentina, and a main airline of South America. 10 People In tandem: A journey to everything new Lufthansa Technik Budapest s aircraft maintenance engineers share their LTP experience When Lufthansa Technik Budapest (LTB) started accepting applications for an exchange program to the Philippines, Imre Szél and János Lengyel both had the same things in mind. We thought that a new working experience will be a very good opportunity for us. They were looking for two qualified aircraft engineers with a B1 license, among other requirements, and we re both lucky to have been chosen, says Szél. Aside from the experience, they knew how they will be presented with new challenges. It had been a challenge, because LTB only offers services for the A320s. Our first project here in Manila was on a landing gear change of an A330, and I can say we are glad that we could participate in this work, adds Lengyel. Just a month after a dropping temperature at the largest city of Hungary, Szél and Lengyel packed their bags for a threemonth stint at Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP). It s extremely hot compared to where we came from, but we are loving it here, notes Szél. The whole program had not only forged a better relationship between subsidiaries, but also encouraged ideas and opportunities for improvement. The working habits here in LTP are admirable. The optimistic attitude embodied by the Filipino workers here makes the work environment more comfortable, and that produces results you want. This is something we hope to bring to LTB, explains Szél. LTP is also employing skilled and talented mechanics. They are very focused and precise with their work, he adds. Asked what they were in turn able to impart to LTP, Lengyel says, We tried to bring in some work processes on how things are done back in LTB. I think that we have processes where LTP can benefit from to make some tasks run faster and effectively. Aside from the landing gear change, Szél and Lengyel have both carried on tasks involving flight controls. They also took part on line maintenance activities in LTP on some days. The two 29-year-old aircraft engineers may have worked hard for this project, but the city s foreign guests cannot leave without discovering the escapes outside Manila. We had limited vacation, but during our days off, we were able to fly to Bohol, Puerto Galera and Pinatubo. It was an amazing experience to see places here in the Philippines, says Szél. As always in tandem with their remarks, Lengyel couldn t agree more.
