Introduction Dominik Wiener-Silva, Vice President Marketing & Sales, Lufthansa Technik Philippines Dear readers, Our cover says it all. Quality service that goes beyond the expected clearly differentiates a company from the rest of the pack. That rings true especially in this industry where competition is always fierce. For Lufthansa Technik Philippines, its highly skilled, service-oriented and English speaking workforce drives this kind of service. We have repeatedly honored our employees who have gone the extra mile for our customers. For us, the employees are the PLUS factor of the company. It was welcome news again when our employees proved this when recently a mechanic and two subcontract personnel returned valuables that they have found while working on an aircraft (page 3). The conscious effort to care more and do more fuels our desire to improve quality and turnaround times continuously. The nod of satisfaction that we received from Swiss International Air Lines for the recent IL-check and cabin modification that we performed for its A340 aircraft further gave validation to our claim of providing high quality maintenance services and reliable turnaround times (page 7). Undoubtedly, a contract renewal from one of our valued customers is a clear sign that we are doing things right. We are delighted to announce the renewal of our base maintenance contract with AirAsia X (page 7). Our track record has also convinced our long-time line maintenance customer, Asiana Airlines, to send us one of its Airbus A320s for IL-check. We are thoroughly pleased with Asiana s decision to expand the scope of its relationship with us (page 6). Lastly, to provide the market with new services, we have again developed a new capability. We kicked off the year with the expansion of our capability to include the ATR aircraft type. Along with this latest addition to our portfolio, we also welcomed Cebu Pacific Air into our roster of customers (page 10). In as much as delivering quality at its best in all our products is our ultimate aim; we also believe that the plus factor that we provide would help ensure the success of our customers. Happy reading and more happy landings to all! Sincerely yours, Dominik Wiener-Silva dws@ltp.com.ph FOUNDED IN the year 2000 as a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik AG and Philippine aviation service provider MacroAsia Corporation, Lufthansa Technik Philippines offers a wide range of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services to customers worldwide. 3 News & Updates EASA gives Lufthansa Technik Philippines its design organization approval Spells short TATs and minimized costs for customers Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) now boasts of a comprehensive in-house design team, having received from Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT) the certification and qualification for its newly authorized Compliance Verification Engineers (CVE). This development makes LTP the first authorized design organization among the LHT subsidiaries outside Germany. Having an in-house design team spells advantages for LTP customers who would benefit from swifter approval process that results to reduced turnaround time for aircraft and minimized costs for minor repair designs, said Rene Zaragoza, LTP vice president for Technical Services. Two years ago, LTP became the first subsidiary to receive an EASA 21 extension from LHT. The extension meant that LTP could develop minor repairs or alterations without the needed coordination with original equipment manufacturers. LTP Design Engineers (DE) who were trained and certified to make recommendations and develop Change/Repair Approval Sheets (CRAS) would send the CRAS to LHT CVEs for verification, and then certification. This is the first step in the process. With the help of LTP s in-house Compliance Verification Engineers, LTP is now authorized to execute the second step in the design process. After this, final certification of the CRAS is sent to LHT. The EASA gave the approval to LTP s new Compliance Verification Engineers after a successful audit in the Manila facility. The audit was part of LHT s plan to authorize CVEs within LTP. t LTP employees are truly priceless Special citations given Made of good stuff. LTP recognized three workers for exhibiting the company s core values. Discipline, responsibility, excellence, commitment, team orientation and reliability these are the traits that define Lufthansa Technik Philippines core values. Yet again, LTP personnel truly exemplified the principles that shape their behavior in the workplace when one of its aircraft mechanics and two sub-contractual workers returned valuable items that they have found in an aircraft cabin. The three workers returned the diamond stones and a piece of jewelry that they have found during a recent layover for a Virgin Atlantic Airways aircraft. These items were reportedly owned by a passenger of the airline. LTP takes pride in the exemplary technical skills of its people but it is exceptionally proud of the character of its employees because this embodies the true ideals of the company. t

News & Updates Personnel Movements The Quality Management department of Lufthansa Technik Philippines recently welcomed its new vice president, Dr. Joern Dahmen. Succeeding Norbert Krueger as vice president of Quality Management, Dahmen was previously director of Quality Management Strategy, Projects & Monitoring in Lufthansa Technik Hamburg. Dahmen came on board LTP this January. He says, I am looking forward to being part of the continuous improvement at LTP and I am happy to join LTP s excellent staff in the daily strive to satisfy our customers and authorities expectations. Richard Lynch, formerly vice president of Material Management, is now vice president of LTP s A380 Project, which entails the development of an additional hangar that will house LTP s A380 capability. AirAsia-LTP Elite Golf Tournament: Enriching a relationship Lufthansa Technik Philippines recently invited top golf players of AirAsia for a day of friendly golf competition in Manila, aptly titled, AirAsia-LTP Elite Golf Tournament. The invitation drew an enthusiastic response from AirAsia s best players with participants composed of players from AirAsia Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines joining LTP players on the field for the 18-hole game. After a sumptuous lunch buffet, an awarding ceremony hailed the best players of the tournament. It was part of a simple program acknowledging the enriched bond between the two organizations. The first ever AirAsia-LTP Elite Golf tournament was also a great occasion to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the first entry of an AirAsia X A340 aircraft into the LTP hangar, which preceded the start of the A330/A340 base maintenance checks of AirAsia X in Manila. The special layover took place during the same month of last year t Taking up the position of vice president for Material Management is Gilbert Cu, who was previously assistant vice president of Material Management He is responsible for the facilities group, general materials purchasing, strategic purchasing, and the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority- Philippine Economic Zone Authority (MCIAA-PEZA Cebu) project. Succeeding Cu as assistant vice president is Jennifer Lim Gan. She is responsible for aircraft-related purchasing. She was previously division manager of Material Planning & Procurement, Aircraft Overhaul & External Component Services. Both Cu and Lim Gan have been with LTP since its beginnings in t

News & Updates Focus Elevating the expertise in Malta Frame 47 modification delivered A group of thirteen mechanics from Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) made its way to Malta during the first quarter of this year 2011, to perform a frame 47 modification task required of a Lufthansa German Airlines A aircraft currently undergoing heavy maintenance at Lufthansa Technik Malta (LTM). In close collaboration with the Airbus team, LTP s mechanics demonstrated their skills and know-how on the modification. LTP initially worked on the preparation and removal of parts, and was followed by significant cuts done by Airbus. The entire procedure was finalized by LTP with the installation of parts and oversized bolts. Doing this specific task in LTM has been crucial in meeting a fast turnaround time target for the release of the Lufthansa aircraft after its heavy check, most especially with this modification task possibly affecting the said TAT. In a scheduled time of ten days for this modification, LTP is proud to have completed the task successfully on time as it relied on its own expertise for this accomplishment. This project under LTP s Personnel Assignment program has been a big leap towards taking the A330/A340 expertise into a more solid ground of experience. To date, LTP has performed twenty frame 47 modification works alongside maintenance events for the A s. The recent deployment to Malta is a proof of LTP s mastery of this craft. We have greatly built up this knowledge on the frame 47 modification, and with LTP s skills and experience on the task, it can be said that we are not just a facility, but also a source of good products and services that can be delivered anywhere else across the globe, says Helge Hoeck, LTP team leader for Structures. Upon the request of LTM, the same group of production personnel will be flown to Malta before the first quarter of the year ends for the same repair procedure. It is interesting to note that the second event in Malta will be in parallel to another frame 47 event in Manila on another A aircraft. LTP is also the first MRO facility to have a frame 47 modification performed outside of an Airbus facility. The task was done on a Lufthansa German Airlines A back in year 2007 and was immediately followed by more aircraft from Cathay Pacific Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways undergoing their maintenance checks. t LTP and MacroAsia launch water efficiency project Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) along with MacroAsia Properties Development Corporation (MAPDC) kicked off the start of the year with an inauguration for the newly built reclaimed water system. This system is one of the several green projects aimed towards sustainability and reduction of the company s ecological footprint. Located along the LTP facility perimeter, the reclaimed water system filters wastewater into cleaner reusable water for purposes such as gardening, toilet flushing, and aircraft cleaning. It is important for LTP to be aware and accountable for its contribution to the environment being among the biggest employers in the country. The reclaimed water system was a joint effort of MAPDC and Inauguration of the reclaimed water system. L-R: FPIP director & PEZA president Hector Dimacali; LTP CFO & SVP Edison Que; MacroAsia Corp. president Joseph Chua; PEZA director general Atty. Lilia De Lima; LLDA OIC for the Environment Adelina Santos-Borja; MAPDC president Christopher C. Lu; and MacroAsia Catering Services general manager & COO Rhodel Esteban LTP s Material Management Department with the support of Bernhard Krueger-Sprengel, LTP president and CEO and Edison Que, senior vice president and CFO. The inauguration featured distinguished speakers from LTP and MacroAsia headed by Joseph Chua, MacroAsia Corporation president and Christopher Lu, MAPDC president. Notable guests from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), and Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) joined the ceremony. t

Base Maintenance Asiana Airlines sends A320 to LTP LHT subsidiary to provide heavy maintenance check Asiana Airlines has expanded its cooperation with Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) when it contracted the Manila-based maintenance, repair and overhaul facility to perform heavy maintenance check on one of its Airbus A320 aircraft. The track record of Lufthansa Technik Philippines in base maintenance check for the Airbus family of aircraft is one of the compelling reasons for entrusting one of our A320s to them. We are confident that with LTP s expertise behind our base maintenance requirements, we will be able to continue providing our award-winning service in the skies, said S.H. Lee, Asiana Airlines general manager for Aircraft & Support Purchasing. The IL-check on Asiana s A320 will start on mid-february and end by the start of March. The A320 aircraft is part of Asiana s mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft which now totals seventy. LTP is now able to provide base maintenance checks on Korean-registered A320 and A330 aircraft through the Approved Maintenance Organization certificate issued by the Republic of Korea. LTP has been providing line maintenance services to Asiana s flights to the Philippines since At present, LTP renders line maintenance services to Asiana in Manila, Clark and Cebu. To date, Asiana is one of LTP s most important line maintenance customers. We welcome this development in our years of partnership with Asiana. We are glad that they have recognized the years of partnership that we have with them and our efforts of providing them consistent and top quality service, said Dominik Wiener-Silva, LTP vice president for marketing and sales. Lufthansa Technik and Asiana Airlines have already been cooperating Dominik Wiener-Silva, LTP vice president for Marketing and Sales shakes hands with S.H. Lee, Asiana Airlines general manager for Aircraft and Support Purchasing, after the contract signing. for about twenty years. Currently, both companies are also working together in the fields of CF6-80 engine maintenance and component services TCS for Airbus A321 and Boeing B737 aircraft. Based in Seoul, Asiana Airlines is one of South Korea s major carriers. Asiana was awarded the Airline of the Year 2009 by ATW (Air Transport World) and then was named Airline of the Year 2010 by Skytrax. Nominated for such prestigious awards demonstrates that Asiana s quality of service is broadly recognized and trusted. Recently, Asiana, has placed an order for six Airbus A380s, and plans to take delivery of them from t Dragonair A330 benefits from LTP s accurate findings Fierce and legendary as the dragon creature, the aircraft which tail sign bears the same character underwent a special layover involving a landing gear change for its A aircraft. Dragonair, hailed as the world s best regional airline in 2010 by Skytrax, had entrusted one of its A330s for replacement of the aircraft s two main landing gears and nose landing gear. Delivering above expectations on customer s quality requirements, Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) further proved its reliability in this layover performance when it made a crucial discovery its team of production personnel found an extensive corrosion in the main landing gear s fittings. LTP immediately communicated the findings to Airbus to make way for an expeditious cure on the fittings damages, allowing the aircraft to fly back to service on time after successfully completing all required tasks to replace the landing gears. Dragonair, an affiliate member of oneworld, is a Hong Kong-based international airline, and a member of the Cathay Pacific Group. Established in 1985, the airline now operates a fleet of 14 A s, six A321s and 11 A320s providing quality passenger and cargo services. The airline s network covers 32 destinations across the Asia- Pacific region, including 17 in mainland China. t

Base Maintenance Successful release of Swiss A340 by LTP Completes heavy check and cabin modification on-time A Swiss International Air Lines Airbus A successfully underwent a heavy maintenance check at Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP). We are very pleased to report the successful completion of our first heavy maintenance check and cabin retrofit for Swiss International Air Lines. The trust and cooperation that both Swiss and Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT) extended to the overhaul production team played a vital role in this success. We look forward to servicing more of their aircraft, said Dominik Wiener-Silva, LTP vice president for Marketing and Sales. This event marked the first time that Swiss International Air Lines, a member of the Lufthansa Group, sent an aircraft to the Manila-based Lufthansa Technik AG subsidiary for maintenance work. LTP had previously provided base maintenance services on the A330/A340 fleets of Lufthansa Airline Group members: Lufthansa German Airlines, Austrian Airlines, and bmi. Along with the D1 check, LTP performed cabin modification which involved installation of flat bed seats in the business class section and the consequent reduction of the tourist or economy class seats to accommodate the wider new business class seats. This modification brings the total to eight first class seats, 47 business class seats and 164 tourist or economy seats from the previous eight first class seats, 48 business class seats and 174 tourist seats. Since LTP performed aircraft overhaul in 2002, its Cabin Repair team has done cabin modifications on Airbus widebodies and narrowbodies and on the Boeing 747. The aircraft types along with the varying extent of each modification have tested this group s capability and flexibility. LTP s Cabin Repair team has vast experience in seat re-layouts, re-installations and removal of seats, IFE systems, modules, stowage bins and panels. t AirAsia X extends contract with Lufthansa Technik Philippines Entrusts its Airbus fleet once more In a show of its continued trust in Lufthansa Technik Philippines, AirAsia X, the world s first successful long-haul, low-cost airline, renewed its contract with the Manilabased maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company. Anaz Ahmad Tajuddin, AirAsia X s Head of Engineering said: The expansion of the agreement between AirAsia X and Lufthansa Technik Philippines is our commitment towards providing continuous quality services to our passengers. The teamwork and partnership we receive from Lufthansa Technik Philippines has ensured proven reliability of our aircraft thus far. We look forward to further breed this partnership in ensuring we are the world s best. The signing of the supplemental contract comes a year after the signing of the threeyear base maintenance agreement between the two companies that covers base maintenance services to AirAsia X s Airbus fleet of nine A330s and two A340s. The recently signed supplemental contract covers C-checks to be done this year for AirAsia X s Airbus fleet. During the first year of the agreement, LTP provided MRO services including C-checks, a heavy maintenance check, several cabin retrofit and aircraft painting. The expansion of our agreement with AirAsia X is a true manifestation of the success of our partnership with one of the world s fastest growing airlines today. We intend to make this partnership evolve further by staying committed in delivering results in terms of quality, short and reliable turnaround times, and cost predictability, said Dino Santos, LTP sales manager. AirAsia X is the long-haul low fare affiliate of AirAsia, Asia s leading and largest lowcost airline. It was introduced in January 2007 under the concept of providing longhaul flights at affordable rates. AirAsia X s network of destinations includes Australia, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan France, India, New Zealand, Tehran and the UK. t 7

News & Updates LHT supports LTP s CSR projects anew Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) received a total donation of more than 4,800 Euros from the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT) in support of LTP s Corporate Social Responsibility projects for two selected institutions Haven for Children and Marillac Hills. These two recipients were selected from a list of potential beneficiaries given to LHT for their intended 2010 Christmas donation. The grant extended to LTP was announced at a traditional Lufthansa Technik Christmas event in Hamburg that is widely attended by its management employees. This charitable act is already the third donation from LHT. Previously, LHT s donations have made their way to projects for the National Children s Hospital in 2008 and for the Balubad Health Center in Medical equipment were provided for at the Balubad Health Center for the victims of the Ketsana typhoon tragedy during the said year. Haven for Children is a temporary shelter designed to provide healing and empowerment to former street children, composed mainly of young boys, 13 years old and below, who are recovering from substance abuse or other social injustices. Marillac Hills is a temporary shelter for girls and young women who are in need of social care and special protection. Both recipients are facilities of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the country which provisions for after-care and special support services through home life, social, psychological, medical, educational and sociocultural programs. t Helping kids embrace the joys of reading CSR project teamed with Synergeia Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), through the Synergeia program, recently sponsored a three-day event for 1,200 grade 1 students of one of its three partner schools. The event was held to encourage the students to read more and improve their listening skills through active participation in group learning activities. An evaluation conducted by the teachers of the school showed that values formation and the drive to study and read were areas that needed to be addressed. This prompted the project s management team composed of LTP management and employees, Synergeia, Department of Education (DepEd), teachers, parents and a local government unit (LGU) to organize a reading proficiency program for the students. With the main goal of improving the students proficiency in English and Math, seminar and training were conducted for both the teachers and parents to assist them in giving the proper way of educating the students when it comes to reading. To further support this goal, LTP and Synergeia co-sponsored in providing workbooks to the students. Skills in reading and listening are the foundations of good education. Giving a good example and providing books are valuable contributions that LTP can make to their future, shares LTP President and CEO Bernhard Krueger-Sprengel. LTP is happy to have embarked on this project and will continue to build on its Corporate Social Responsibility program with focus on education of the country s youth. Synergeia is a highly awarded nongovernmental organization (NGO) mobilizing communities in the Philippines to help alleviate learning and education in the country, focusing on proficiencies in English and Mathematics. The Synergeia approach measures significant improvements in these two key performances which help kids to do better in school. Synergeia is highly awarded for their approach and is now being copied in other Asian countries. t

News & Updates Reaching out high Three hundred kids were given great joy at the beginning of the year as the LTP-Malaya Mountaineering Club hiked to a selected area in Sitio Madlum in San Miguel, Bulacan (province north of Manila) to distribute toys, foods, schools supplies and infant clothes. The LTP-Malaya Mountaineering Club makes a yearly effort to reach out to children by giving gifts and conducting activities for social encouragement and support. Now the club s fourth outreach activity, this project is driven by the desire to bring extra happiness to the kids in the country. It was made possible through the support and assistance given by LTP s Corporate Social Responsibility program, as well as contributions from the employees. As one of their upcoming projects, the club eyes donating mosquito nets to another selected area. This will take place before the expected rainy season as problems of dengue and malaria in the rural and mountainous regions are often reported during this time of the year. t People Discovering the rhythm of the Philippines Vladivostok Avia s director for aircraft maintenance steps to the beat of the islands Sergey Kulagin may strike you as mysterious but only because he is a man of few words. These few uttered words though bring depth and draws you to silently agree with any of the conversations he shares. People in the aviation world are different. Any job in this industry entails determination and passion to successfully pull off tasks, says Kulagin after citing an aircraft on ground (AOG) instance. After six years of studying in the Institute of Civil Aviation in the city of Kiev, the biggest aviation school in Ukraine and also the one of only two schools present in the world, the 39-year old Russian acquired his mechanical engineering degree. He then spent eleven years in helicopter maintenance where he eventually became technical director. Five years ago, a slight shift in his career took place when Vladivostok Avia took him in as director for aircraft maintenance where he underwent training for the Airbus fleet. With this role, Kulagin continuously monitors the C-checks done on the Vladivostok aircraft including those performed by LTP in Manila. It s all about work, work, work for me. I hardly find time to have a hobby or a pastime I can enjoy. If time permits, I love skating during the winters or relaxing by the Japanese sea in the summers, he shares. Kulagin expresses the common notion about the city, It is very hot here in Manila, but I can also say that this is one happy nation. Adding to his list of favorites when he finds himself in the city is the live music played in different establishments. It s everywhere. There s always live music from café bars to restaurants. I enjoy this part of the Filipino culture. Having stayed in the Philippines thrice while overseeing the C-checks of Vladivotok s A320 aircraft, Kulagin is glad to be in step to the beat of these islands happy, smiling and constantly singing people. t

Line maintenance LTP adds ATR to its portfolio Widens product range to support customers To satisfy domestic and regional passenger demand in the low-cost carrier sector, more airlines include the turboprop aircraft into their fleet to suit their business strategy. Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) is a step ahead in support of these developments as it recently made an addition to its capabilities. LTP now serves the ATR aircraft type for line maintenance needs. Derived from a completely new maintenance concept, the newly built capability is completely different from LTP s current maintenance operations and is tailor-made for the needs of low cost carriers. We have created a very lean and dedicated organization to meet the efficiency and speed which is required by customers in the low cost market. LTP has also trained their mechanics for the ATR maintenance operations to EASA standards giving them a wider range of skills and knowledge thus making them more flexible, shares Dirk Heil, LTP vice president for Aircraft Maintenance. In addition to these efforts, airlines can also take advantage of a developed technological infrastructure involving online documentation right at the aircraft and video linkage features bridging maintenance activities, the customer and support offices. This expansion in LTP s product portfolio is a strong mark of its wealth of experience in the MRO industry proving the flexibility and optimum support given to its wide range of customers and their fleet. A true demonstration of this competence arose as Cebu Pacific Air entrusted its fleet of ATR aircraft for turnaround, daily, weekly and A-check services. Material management and logistics services will also be provided for the fleet. Part of this agreement also covers the provision of hangar access and use of hangar at the Manila and Cebu maintenance bases for the scheduled A- checks of the aircraft. Cebu Pacific Air is one of the Philippines low-cost carriers equipped with the youngest fleet composed of 10 Airbus A319, 14 Airbus A320 and eight ATR aircraft. It flies to 33 domestic and 14 international destinations. ATR is the one of the world s leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of regional aircraft. It has become the benchmark for regional turboprop aircraft for over twenty years now, with over 160 operators in more than 90 countries. t New line maintenance customers Jetstar Airways Jetstar Airways appoints Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) to provide line maintenance services to its Airbus A320/ A321 aircraft operating at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1. In the past, LTP successfully carried out paint conversion jobs and cabin modifications for Jetstar Airways. This is LTP s first time to provide line maintenance services to the Australian low-cost carrier and looks forward to a long-lasting and successful relationship ahead. Jetstar is also LTP s first A320 customer to be a part of its growing LCC customer base. Two of its Airbus A320s successfully underwent maintenance events during the last quarter of the year 2010, completing C6- check and C4-check respectively. t All Nippon Airways LTP is pleased to welcome Japan s All Nippon Airways (ANA), to its roster of line maintenance customers. The airline has entrusted its Boeing 767 aircraft to LTP as it begins its new route schedule of flights from Tokyo Narita to Manila this February. This new route service will not only link the two big cities, but would also respond to the demand for convenient transfer to North America via Narita. ANA is also the first foreign carrier to operate in Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). ANA is one of the largest airlines in Japan with 153 aircraft in operation, including twenty-eight A320 aircraft. The company recently announced that its new low-cost joint venture would operate a fleet of 10 Airbus A320s. The airline maintains its headquarters in Tokyo and operates an extensive scheduled network that serves over fifty domestic and twenty-seven overseas destinations in Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. t 10
