2 Steve Shiflett First Solo Flight 9 August 2012 N29513 Piper Warrior Kevin Marpert CFI Rare Storch Arrives at Cable Airport CAF... 3rd Pursuit Squadron to begin restoration and they plan to fly it! Months of negotiations are over! The CAF s Storch is now at Cable Airport s 3rd Pursuit Squadron awaiting full inspection prior to restoration. Cliff Heathcoat took an elite, crackerjack recon team to abscond with the WWII warbird from the famous CAF museum at Midland Texas. This Storch is very rare, and is the only ambulance version left in the world. The Storch is probably best know as the airplane that rescued Mussolini from an Italian mountain, however there are other milestone achievements by the Storch. It is the first airplane to land and take off from a street corner in downtown Berlin, and a Storch was involved in the last aerial battle of WWII. (With a L-4 Piper Cub.) More information on this project and the history of the airplane will be presented at the upcoming meetings. Story by Bud (LOUD PIPES) Ukes. Join the 3rd Pursuit Restoration Team and get to fly this real piece of history. Call Tony Settember

4 Pomona Valley Pilots Association Annual Scholarship Awards Thursday, September 20, 7:30pm Brackett Airport, Pilots Lounge Scholarships will be awarded to; Mt San Antonio College, Chaffey College and Orange Coast College Students Following the Awards will be a presentation by Gary Pat Macha Aircraft Wrecks in the Mountains & Deserts of the American West Gary Pat Macha is a Huntington Beach resident who teaches history and geography at Hawthorne High School. He is California s premier aircraft archeologist identifying and documenting wrecked or abandoned aircraft. He has written 3 books and produced a video, Lost but Not Forgotten, featuring footage of crash sites from 1930 to the present. One of his current searches is for the last WASP unaccounted for who departed from Mines Field (now LAX) in October 1944 and disappeared while delivering a P-51 to Arizona. Fuel Leak Nearly Forces Jetliner to Ditch in Pacific New York Times A Trans World Airways jumbo jet made an emergency landing after developing a leak and running low on fuel, but airline officials said they were not sure how close it came to a forced ditching in the Pacific. The plane, T.W.A. Flight 235, from Los Angeles to Honolulu with 205 people aboard, landed early Monday at Hilo International Airport on the island of Hawaii, 200 miles southeast of Honolulu, because it was the closest airport, Don Morrison, a spokesman for the airline, said in St Louis. Asked about a televised news report here that the Lockheed L-1011 had about four minutes of fuel left when it landed, Mr. Morrison said that had not been determined. Editor s note: This story is about a flight our very own Cableite Joe Anderson, left seat Captain, took in This is only an excerpt the remaining story is on the Cable WEB Gram. The story was written by the right seat Captain. Dick (Flight Engineer) informed us that he could see what he perceived to be a vapor stream coming off the left wing, near the number one engine. The check captain went back as well and confirmed that yes, we did have a fuel leak. A quick calculation showed that we would run out of fuel a few hundred miles short of Honolulu, not exactly a good scenario! My swim suit was in my bag, as it always was on these flights but still, I had no desire to go swimming at night nor did anyone else, I m sure! Coincidentally, I had experienced a similar fuel problem a year earlier while flying in another L-1011 to New York from Los Angeles. We were over Missouri when a United pilot called to tell us that he could see fuel streaming out of our wing. Fortunately, we were over land and, after shutting down the affected engine, I proceeded to land at Kansas City, our maintenance base. This time, however, there was not land beneath us with a myriad of airports to choose from. Déjà vu a year later Hilo, on the big island of Hawaii, is actually one hundred miles further east than Honolulu, as the islands run southeast and northwest. I immediately programmed that airport into our computer and a quick check showed that, even though it was closer, we still wouldn t have enough fuel to make it. It was at that time I believe when Dick said something like we re screwed. He probably voiced what all of us were thinking. While Joe was trying to figure a solution to our problem, I was on the radios. I don t know why but I thought of the Apollo 13 crew and their famous line that went Houston, we have a problem. When I initially talked to the controlling air traffic facility, my first words were Center, this is TWA 235; we have a problem. We declared an emergency and I explained the situation to them after being asked for information including amount of souls on board. I really didn t like that word; we were still living, breathing people and not souls! They said that they d get back to us Join us on for this exciting story Page 2

5 As The Beacon Turns.. Cableites have been busy with their projects; traveled to the far reaches of the world; joined together in the proverbial search for a fun place to fly for breakfast, brunch, or dinner; and taken that terrifying step into the wild blue yonder, trusting that their many hours of love and labor will hold together until they touch down again. Most of us other Cableites never hear about these adventures or possibilities. Along with other pertinent happenings affecting Cable Airport.. As The Beacon Turns Do you perform your own oil changes on your aircraft? Are you a loyal customer of Mathisen Oil, as your choice of supplier, for your petroleum needs?
