Airways General on airways in EKDK Most airways through Copenhagen AOR are in some way connected to one of the Enroute VORs: Aalborg (AAL), Ramme (RAM), Vesta (VES), Alsie (ALS), and Codan (CDA). These can be seen on the map below. Figure 3.5 Often used VORs in Danish Airspace Some airways are uni directional and some are bi directional. In the sector file you ll be able to see if the airway is uni directional (and in which direction) by looking at the symbol next to the airway designator. The RSVM rules are in force in Denmark and Danish Airspace. This means that traffic only needs 1000 ft of separation up to FL410. Above FL410 the normal ICAO separation of 2000 feet applies. The NEODD rule, and a twist Most of the airways in Danish Airspace follow the NEODD rule where eastbound traffic travels on odd flight levels and westbound traffic on even

2 flight levels. However no rule without exceptions. The following airways doesn t follow the NEODD rule. Normally because the route makes a turn passing the 360 or 180 mark. Also inbound Copenhagen via GESKA and CDA VOR should hold an even flight level on their way towards CDA VOR. Figure 3.6 shows the non NEODD airways in sector A. It is only the T551 (BINRO (ENOS) AAL) and M609 (VESTA RASVI (ENOS)) that isn t shown on the map. A magenta line shows (a part of) an airway with a reversed NEODD rule. A

These are marked with an arrow in the sector file next to the name of the airway. Transit Traffic Flow In this section a small note on the general flow of transit traffic to expect on VATSIM, and is also shown on the small map below. This guidelines was written in spring The airway layout might have changed since then. Always check the newest traffic flow and/or ask a senior controller. The arrows show the main flow of transit traffic through Denmark. Furthermore you ll soon learn which entry/exit points are used most of the times. It is initially a good idea to turn the 5 main VORs on individually in your radar client or keep a list of entry/exit points next to you. Although there are many airways a few corridors are the ones mainly used by transit traffic. These main flow routes designate in 6 areas. Clockwise there are: 1. The Northern corner: Traffic from Oslo to the rest of mainland Europe and vice versa. 2. Via Göteborg: North West European traffic to/from Stockholm and Finland. 3. The south eastern corner: Traffic passing over Sjælland between Bremen FIR and Sweden. 4. Over ALSIE: near ALS VOR a lot of European traffic gather to/from the continent. 5. The North Sea mostly have traffic that is on its way to/from the UK sectors. 6. The Oslo Corridor: Traffic between Oslo and the UK.

5 Figure 3.8 General transit routes Direct routing When possible we encourage ATC s to give pilots a direct routing as far as possible, however never any further than the Danish area of responsibility without a pre agreement with the next ATC. Never give a direct routing that clears the aircraft through foreign airspace (e.g. aircraft from Sweden leaving the AOR at TIPAN They will cross in to Dutch airspace) and finally be aware that a direct routing makes traffic leaving the airways. So be sure you still want the aircraft outside the corridor later on. More important than shortcuts is that you can maintain an overview of the consequences of a direct routing. Refer also to Section FRA below Mandatory Reporting points Copenhagen FIR only uses "On Request" reporting points. No Mandatory reporting points are found any longer. FRA (Free Route airspace) Denmark and Sweden have established a common FRA allowing pilots to plan their routes freely not necessarily following the airway structure. Some conditions must be met, however. The most important is that FRA

6 only applies to airspace above FL285! This section highlights the main concept. For more information see EK SUP at slv.dk. Overview FRA is the airspace in Denmark above FL285 and Sweden UIR A FRA entry and exit point must be entered in the flight plan. Valid FRA Entry/Exit points in DK is listed in ENR 4.4 or table below. For Sweden see lfv.se ENR 4.4 A direct route segment between waypoints is written as DCT in the flightplan For arriving/departing traffic FRA Transit routes have been established A Transition Point is a point, where traffic can change from FRA to normal fixed route operation. Entry/exit points in denmark In figure 3.8 below Entry points are shown in yellow, Exit points in blue (none at present) and points used for both entry and exit are shown in green. As seen on the chart no points are found along the Danish/Swedish border, as the FRA is common between Denmark and Sweden. Entry/exit points in sweden If a complete flightplan check for flights entering Sweden via Denmark is needed the controller have to check the flightplan for the appropriate FRA Entry/Exit point in Sweden. This is probably not usually needed and Swedish controllers will provide assistance on request. A chart of Entry/Exit points in EKDK/ESOS is found in the EK SUP For flights via Denmark the following FRA Exit points are appropriate: ARR ESSA: ARR ESSB: ROGMI ARR Östgöta TMA: DETSO, MIKNA, VIBAR, ARMOD and ROGMI DETSO, UMTON, MIKNA, VIBAR, ARMOD and BEDOS, LURAR and DETSO Flights to Denmark should have been checked by the Swedish controller, so no additional action should be needed. Departures, arrivals and transit routes Traffic departing or arriving at Danish airports or airports in Sweden close to

7 the Danish AOR must enter or exit the FRA via FRA Transit Routes. Departing traffic with destination outside EKDK FIR must follow the SID. The SID termination point is the FRA entry point. If no SID is available, a waypoint within 100nm of the airport can be used as FRA entry point. For arriving traffic the FRA exit point is the STAR initial waypoint. If no STAR is available a waypoint within 100nm of the airport can be used as FRA exit point. Figure 3.8 FRA Entry and Exit points in Denmark. Traffic departing ESMS/TL via SVD KULUD can have DCT after KULUD to a FRA Exit point.
