VATSIM-UK Essex RTS STANSTED CROSS THE POND PILOT GUIDE 25th October 2014
VATSIM UK and The Essex RTS a happy to welcome you to London Stansted as part of this year s CTP Eastbound event. Please take a look at this guide, which is full of useful information to ensure you have a safe, expeditious and pleasant arrival into this wonderful, challenging airfield. Airfield Information Charts Charts are available from the NATS AIS website, which can be found here. Click UK Aeronautical Information Publication (IAIP) On the left hand side, click Aerodrome Index Specific and navigate to London Stansted. Scenery UK2000 Scenery offer great scenery for Stansted, in both a fully featured payware version, and a freeware version. Those can be found here. If your system can t handle complex, add on sceneries, we recommend you download an up to date AFCAD file. Default FSX scenery is radically different to the current layout, and you may find yourself lost! Frequencies The airspace around Stansted and the London TMA is very complex, these are some of the frequencies you may need to contact during your arrival. Please make yourself familiar, so you don t get caught unaware! ID Sector Name Frequency LTC_NW_CTR London Control ESSEX_APP Essex Radar EGSS_APP Stansted Director EGSS_TWR Stansted Tower EGSS_GND Stansted Ground EGSS_ATIS Stansted Information
Step by Step Guide Arrival into the EGTT FIR Dependent upon tracks, you will be arriving from The EGPX or EISN FIR. You will most likely be handed to LON_N_CTR or LON_W_CTR. Upon first contact with the London controller you will be assigned the appropriate STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route) Expected arrival routes are via BEDEK (LOREL2S), GIBSO (LOREL2D) and WAL (LOREL4F). However, please refer to controller instructions, as situations may change. PLEASE NOTE: ASKEY is only used during a failure of the BKY VOR, and is therefore isn t used on VATSIM. Use only LOREL STARS. If unable to comply with any ATC instruction at any point, please inform us. We can deal with a situation we know about. When you require descent, and haven t already been told to do so, inform the controller, and they will attempt to accommodate your request. You will commonly be told; BAW123, when ready, descend FL200 to be level by ROGBI This means that when you reach your top of descent, you can begin to descend. If you are unable to comply with a restriction, such as the one above, then don t hesitate to inform the controller. Descent Planning Actual Descent clearance will be issued by ATC, however, please plan your descent as follows: STAR Waypoint Planned Flight Level LOREL2S BEDEK FL180 LOREL4F ROGBI FL200 LOREL2D GIBSO FL270 You must cross the SLP (speed limit point) on your STAR at 250kts IAS or less, unless otherwise instructed by ATC. 3
Holding Holding may be required in periods of heavy traffic, please make yourself familiar with the LOREL hold, and the two en-route holds into Stansted. If you are unable to hold, please inform the controller. Hold Inbound Course Speed Leg Time (Turn Direction) LOREL 188(L) 220kts 1 Minute VATON 027(L) 220kts 1 Minute BOMBO 093(L) 220kts 1 Minute Intermediate Approach All LOREL STARs route to BKY VOR, you can expect to leave the STAR there, however in times of heavy traffic, you may be instructed to: Route BKY BUSTA LOREL If so, please follow the remainder of the STAR, and if no further instructions are given, you must hold at LOREL. Speed restrictions will be issued as required by ATC, and you must follow them at all times, however, please plan to have a speed of 220kts passing BKY, as the descent can become steep from this point. 4
Final Approach Please be aware, the Transition level is variable in the UK. When cleared to a Flight Level, ensure you have 1013 hpa set on your altimeter. When you have been cleared to an altitude, set the local QNH setting issued by the controller. Once vectored for the ILS, you will be typically instructed to: Maintain Speed 165kts, until 4dme Please follow this strictly, as it allows us to squeeze in as many aircraft as possible! Landing & Vacating the Runway When landing, please vacate the runway as fast as possible to prevent go arounds. We suggest planning to vacate using one of the rapid exit taxiways, this reduces runway occupancy time as much as possible. Once vacated you will be instructed to contact the ground controller, who will then issue taxi instructions and allocate a stand for your aircraft. Go Arounds During your approach you should always plan for a possible go around. Please configure your aircraft so that you are prepared for a go around situation (e.g setting the missed approach altitude on the autopilot). If the controller initiates a go around, you will most likely be given the instruction: BAW123, Go around, I say again go around, acknowledge This implies that you should follow the standard missed approach (given below). Any further instructions will then be issued by the controller in a separate transmission. Controllers may also issue tactical headings and altitude restrictions (as the situation requires) Runway 04 Runway 22 5
