Introduction Rainer Janke, Vice President Marketing & Sales, Lufthansa Technik Philippines Breaking new ground Dear readers, The Philippines is ranked the second fastest growing economy in 2015 and is projected to grow as much as six percent or more, according to Bloomberg. Within this period of robust growth, more international airlines have started operating in the country. With newly launched routes by Turkish Airlines and Oman Air, LTP was tapped to provide technical support for the airlines flights (page 8). LTP and Qantas recently signed a 10-year agreement for base maintenance of Qantas s A380s (page 3). Since our maintenance campaign for the airline s A380s back in 2012, we strive to continue providing the best service and cost-efficient solutions for their fleet. This year, we broke ground and began construction on a hangar extension. Soon, we will be able to work on up to two base maintenance checks for the A380 simultaneously and expand our potential to include base maintenance for the Boeing 777 and other future aircraft types (page 4-5). Always welcome at our hangars is the fleet of our long-time customer, Philippine Airlines. Our partnership with PAL is stronger than ever, with our recent 2-year base maintenance agreement for its Airbus fleet (page 6). Additionally, we are pleased to welcome new and returning customers: Air Mauritius, Thai AirAsia X, AirAsia Philippines, Cebu Pacific, and Aurora Airlines (page 7). No matter where in the world we are, LTP employees ingenuity and skills shine bright. A handful of our mechanics and engineers have been assigned to Lufthansa Technik North America and Air Mauritius (page 9-10). The past few months have been very eventful for us at LTP as we are driven by a positive outlook and new opportunities. I am pleased to share with you this issue of TechniLink, which chronicles our shared successes with our customers and our journey towards MRO service excellence. 3 Base Maintenance Entrusting its flagship fleet Qantas Airways signs exclusive, long-term agreement with Lufthansa Technik Philippines for its A380s Strong partnership. Left to right: August Wilhelm Henningsen, former Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik AG; Dr. Burkhard Andrich, Lufthansa Technik Philippines President & CEO; Sandra Nieuwenhuijzen, Qantas Head of Maintenance Operations; Chris Nassenstein, Qantas Engineering Executive General Manager. A irline operators have very tall requirements when it comes to the care of their aircraft. Given the sheer amount spent in keeping it up in the air, it should be no surprise that they have crafted stringent requirements to take care of their investment. For third-party MROs, gaining the trust and loyalty of airlines has become the ultimate objective. The goal is attainable, when the relationship is based on fair partnership, and both sides meet each other s expectations. It was an important occasion then, when Lufthansa Technik Philippines and long-time customer Qantas Airways, signed an exclusive long-term agreement. It is one of the largest base maintenance contracts throughout the Lufthansa Technik network, says Dr. Burkhard Andrich, President and CEO of LTP. We We look forward to building, in the next 10 years, a partnership based on commitment, reliability, and quality between our two companies. are pleased that Qantas has chosen us for the upkeep of its A380 fleet. This landmark agreement reinforces our capabilities as a reliable aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul provider in the region. Starting this year, all base and heavy maintenance checks required by Qantas for its 12 Airbus A380s, will be fulfilled by LTP. That includes various modifications, C1-checks, C2-checks, C4-checks, and in the future, C8-checks. The signing reflects the long-term trust and partnership between the airline and MRO, which started in 2006, when LTP first performed C-checks on Qantas s Airbus A330 fleet. According to Chris Nassenstein, Executive General Manager - Engineering of Qantas Airways, Lufthansa Technik Philippines is a trusted MRO of Qantas. We look forward to building in the next 10 years, a partnership based on quality and reliability between our two companies. The agreement also reaffirms LTP s commitment to further its A380 expertise. Since opening its first A380 hangar in 2012, the MRO has been steadily developing its capabilities by gaining the C4 heavy maintenance approval last year, and embarking on a hangar expansion project this year, to accommodate a second A380 line. 1st-2nd Quarter

Base Maintenance Computer generated perspective of the finished widebody hangar Breaking ground on new capabilities Hangar expansion project to make room for second A380 line and new B777 capability A t the start of the year, Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), broke ground for its main hangar s expansion. The event signifies a major step in the company s ongoing efforts to widen its expertise, involving the construction of a second A380 bay, and the build-up of a new, Boeing 777 base maintenance capability. We are excited about this project, because once done, we ll be able to increase our yearly capacity by 200,000 manhours, says Sascha Leitner, Head of Strategy and Corporate Projects. Not only will the hangar be A380 and B777 capable, we re building flexible, multi-aircraft bays, which will allow us to adjust according to different aircraft types and market requirements. This key development changes the façade of LTP s main hangar. Presently, it fits 4 widebody aircraft at the same time. When the hangar opens in November, it will have two of its bays (Bay 2 and Bay 3) extended out to fit the A380, and another widebody for heavy maintenance events. The extension is in parallel with the existing A380 hangar, sitting at the main hangar s left, when facing the facility from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport runway. Built in two stages Angela Green, who serves as the hangar expansion s project manager, was brought in after her successful project with Lufthansa Technik Malta. According to Angela, the construction will be conducted in two phases: first is the clearing and digging out of concrete foundations for additional hangar space and new door rails, before the second phase, which is where the actual heavy steel construction begins. A total of 126 x 24 meters will be utilized from the apron area. To make room for that amount of space, will affect aircraft 1st-2nd Quarter 2015

Base Maintenance movements and daily operations. Therefore, before starting the heavy construction, a change in the aircraft parking layout, towing lines and relocation of several offices was necessary to keep any operational impact at a minimum. Having identified the necessary space required to fit, for example, an A380 and another widebody in Bay 3, settles the need for additional floor space. However, additional airspace is also required. To solve this, the extension s roof will be raised above the original hangar roof. With over 30 meters in height, this ensures the A380 s tail stays well within the extension s enclosure, even if the plane is jacked. Sustainable and flexible multi-aircraft bays A number of support structures such as mezzanines, aircraft docking and linking bridges, will be built to provide increased accessibility to the planes fuselage. To make sure the structure is built sustainably, Bay 3 s docking system will be designed so that the servicing of future aircraft types such as the Boeing 777-9X, B787 and Airbus A350 will be possible. Offices and direct access to backshops will also be constructed, with efficiency and proximity to the aircraft in mind. Certifying staff, engineers, planners, tool room and other support personnel are required to undergo additional theoretical, familiarization and practical trainings to make certain that they are licensed and prepared for the increased capabilities. Strong expertise and faster turnaround times LTP s expertise has grown significantly since its first A380 hangar opened in Prior to its hangar expansion project, it has gained the C4 (6-year check) approval from the CASA and EASA. To date, very few MROs in the world are already capable of maintaining the A380. The C4, its biggest check is even fewer. LTP has built up a wide range of capabilities for the A380, from cabin reconfiguration, to wing-rib modification as well as C1, C2, and C4-checks, says Marek Wernicke Senior Vice President for Base Maintenance at LTP. At present, we have concluded over ten C1 and C2-checks, two C4-checks, and various cabin and wing-rib modifications. These events have strengthened our expertise and improved our turnaround times. Growing customer base Previously, Qantas and Air France have flown their A380s to Manila for C-checks and modifications. To add to its portfolio, LTP welcomes its first Asian A380 customer, South Korea s Asiana Airlines. The 3-year agreement which was signed in January includes Asiana s two A380s, which will be in LTP starting By that time, LTP will have two A380s undergoing maintenance checks side by side. It s double the capacity, for an aircraft that s twice the regular widebody s size. In order to stay competitive, LTP constantly improves its organization, growing its customer base in tandem with the demands of a constantly evolving market. 1st-2nd Quarter

Base Maintenance LTP and PAL continue cooperation Base maintenance agreement for two years signed Philippine Airlines (PAL) has renewed its partnership with Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) for base and heavy maintenance checks on its Airbus fleet. Following the successful conclusion of their maintenance contract for 2013 and 2014, PAL and LTP have extended the agreement for another two years. Beginning first quarter of 2015, the agreement will cover 58 maintenance events comprising heavy checks for PAL s Airbus A320, A321, A330, and A340 aircraft. Preparation and open communication between both parties have been vital in our collaboration through the years, says Yayo Esquillo, Head of Key Account Management and Customer Service for Lufthansa Technik Philippines. We are grateful for PAL s continued trust in our capabilities and for challenging us to build on our strengths and services. Philippine Airlines outstanding track record and technical operations are bolstered by the airline s strategic partnership with the Philippines largest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul company, Lufthansa Technik Philippines. 7 Base Maintenance Growing customer base Lufthansa Technik Philippines signs up new clients for base maintenance T he second half of 2014 up to the first quarter of 2015 was a landmark period for Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), as it grew its roster of customers and signed up many firsts. In September last year, as part of its existing partnership with the AirAsia X Group, LTP performed a C-check for Thai AirAsia X the first event for a Thailand-registered airline. While the first layover was in connection with the AirAsia X Group, a direct contract with the Thai low cost carrier will commence this month, to cover two more A320s. Thai AirAsia X operates medium to long-haul flights. Another noteworthy first is the completion of base maintenance checks for two local Philippine carriers: AirAsia Philippines and Cebu Pacific. In January, Russian carrier Aurora Airlines flew an Airbus A319 to Manila for a C-check. It s a first under the company s rebranding from Vladivostok Air. Meanwhile, LTP welcomes back Air Mauritius, a returning customer whose last aircraft was released in This year, the airline signed a 3-year contract for base and heavy maintenance checks, covering 13 A330 and A340 aircraft until The campaign commenced in early March, with the first A330 undergoing a C1-check. We are very pleased to have closed these deals with our new and returning clients, says Rainer Janke, LTP Vice President for Marketing and Sales. To stay competitive, programs that will further improve our facilities and processes have been put in place. These are aligned with the Lufthansa Technik Group s standards and are expected to yield tangible results in the near future. Our commitment is to form stronger and longer partnerships with our customers based on mutual trust and cooperation. 1st-2nd Quarter 2015

Line Maintenance Crossing borders Lufthansa Technik Philippines welcomes new flights to Manila Airlines choose LTP for launch flights Last March, LTP welcomed Turkish Airlines to its roster of line maintenance customers. LTP will provide releaseto-service for the national flag carrier of Turkey s A340 aircraft. The airline has recently launched non-stop flights three times weekly between Manila and its main hub, Istanbul, following a recent Philippines-Turkey agreement granting direct flights between Turkey and the Philippines. Last year, LTP welcomed Oman Air, Oman s national carrier. The airline, commenced its inaugural flight last December and has chosen LTP to provide release-to-service for its A330 aircraft flying four times per week between Muscat and Manila. It is the first time for the carrier to operate a direct Muscat to Manila route where it can be of service to Filipino overseas workers in the Middle East and help strengthen the cooperation and tourism between Oman and the Philippines. LTP receives thumbs up from All Nippon Airways All Nippon Airways (ANA) recently expressed their appreciation to Lufthansa Technik Philippines line maintenance team for supporting their Boeing 767 aircraft on short notice. During unexpected technical complications, much time and expenses are usually spent bringing an aircraft back to or sending support from the home station. But the LTP team and onsite ANA engineers were able to carry out an Air Cycle Machine (ACM) replacement on the aircraft quickly. Their swift solution enabled ANA s B767 to fly out on time, minimizing delays and inconvenience to passengers. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation for your excellent maintenance support, said Toru Watanabe, Director of ANA Aircraft Maintenance Planning & Control. Elmer Santos, LTP Section Manager for Foreign Airline Terminal Operations, remarks, It s a good feeling when a customer believes in you. 9 Personnel Assignment Bringing back the former glory Lufthansa Technik Philippines assists North American affiliate in its goal to make the legendary Super Star fly once again Lufthansa Technik Philippines is proud to have six of its skilled mechanics, work on the illustrious Project Super Star, an ambitious restoration project spearheaded by Lufthansa Technik North America (LTNA), to bring back the Lockheed L- 1649A Super Star Constellation and make it fly once again. Launched in 1958, the Super Star is Lufthansa s first long-range aircraft, able to cross oceans without refuelling. It was regarded as the most elegant and most famous passenger aircraft of the time. Considered a legend, the Super Star serves as a historic representation of Lufthansa and aviation. Demand for skilled and talented work Fast forward to 2008, when LTNA first embarked on Project Super Star, the teams recruited to work on the project started displaying special skill sets to restore the complex aircraft parts. On one occasion, a skilled metal worker was able to replicate the intricate shape of the Super Star s rear pressure bulkheads, using his experience from the family business of repairing metal car body. It was an exciting development then, in June 2014 when LTP structural mechanics Gerardo Montillano, Neil Obal, Alvin Lepardo, Noester Tablada, Ricardo Ambay, and Jonathan De Leon were sent to Auburn, Maine to work on the fuselage, stabilizer, and fabrication. Their contract ended in December, but was renewed in January and continues to this day. Historic contribution Work on the Super Star progressed well in 2014, and LTP s mechanics are proud to have contributed to that progress. I mostly do replacement of the Super Star s fuselage parts, such as the skin, frames, and floor beams, says Neil, one of the LTP structural mechanics assigned to the Super Star. What is different about the Project Super Star assignment is the contribution we are making to a historic aircraft. It also inspires us to push our capabilities. Says Andreas Pakzies, Sr. Project Manager at LTNA, The group is doing a great job within their teams. They are very well accepted, and work professionally. Edher Panganiban Account Executive Personnel Assignment edherlina.pili@ltp.com.ph Phone ext Stars align to restore Constellation aircraft series Another Lockheed Super Constellation series aircraft was spotted, this time in Manila. Qantas Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the Qantas Founders Museum, enlisted LTP s support to provide scaffolding for its latest project to dismantle a grounded Lockheed Super Constellation aircraft at the Manila International Airport Authority airfield. Previously used by World Fish and Agriculture Inc to transport fish cargo and the United States Air Force, the aircraft is not airworthy and will be transported from Manila, Philippines to the Qantas Founders Museum in Queensland, Australia, where it will be restored and join other vintage aviation displays, and Qantas heritage artifacts. 1st-2nd Quarter

News & Updates Raising the Philippine banner Personnel assignment at Air Mauritius Rafael Robles, a licensed aircraft engineer, recently returned from a 6-year personnel assignment with Air Mauritius. He is one of the three engineers assigned by LTP to the Mauritian airline, where the two others, Manuel Morales and Myer Agustin are still deployed, up to June this year. TechniLink caught up with Rafael to learn about his experiences in Mauritius. What was your daily routine like? I was involved in line and base maintenance. A routine day will involve a walkaround of the aircraft system and cabin, refueling, debriefing of the incoming captain of the status, attending to any problems that may arise, and releasing the aircraft to service. What do you consider as the most fulfilling part of your work with Air Mauritius? As an engineer, the most fulfilling part is being equipped to troubleshoot problems that may arise. There was an incident that involved a recurring landing gear problem. It was only a matter of correctly tracing the problem and making the necessary rectification, for the problem to be resolved. On another occasion, an A340 engine experienced bleed fault. By quickly identifying the root cause, a solution that was according to proper procedures was applied, and the aircraft was able to fly out on time. I m happy to help improve the airline s dispatch reliability. Six years is a very long time. What was it like working in Mauritius? Working in Mauritius was enjoyable, because the Mauritians are nice and friendly. Most of them helped me adjust to company procedures when I was new, and we became friends. What kind of activities were you involved with outside of work? People there are close to nature. So during our spare time, we would go fishing in lakes or rivers, swimming or hiking. It s something we don t get to experience often, here in the Manila. What are your plans moving forward? I m looking forward to staying with LTP s aircraft maintenance team. I also look forward to spending more time with my family, to make up for the time I was away. Through a child s eyes Quality Management holds poster-making contest among children of LTP employees Lufthansa Technik Philippines ensures its employees adhere to the strictest quality and safety standards. It understands the critical role of its safety programs, not only in keeping the workplace safe, but also to assure families of their fathers, mothers, children, or even grandparents well-being. It is in this spirit that LTP s Quality Management announced a poster making contest themed: Safety begins with the innocent mind of a child. Illustrating thoughts and ideas with true, perceptive clarity that only a child can possess, every poster submitted was able to provide invaluable insights into how a child perceives LTP to be in terms of ensuring its employees safety. In the end, the contest served not only to provide insight, but became a reminder to appreciate life in its purest, simplest form. The contest was split into two brackets: ages 6-9 and The winners of the Safety Poster Making were announced in October last year. 10 1st-2nd Quarter 2015
