9 AIRVENTURE 2016 Youth Aviation Program Students Headed to AirVenture 2016 By Bill Rial Six months ago a few Candler Field Museum volunteers formed a committee to answer a question Would it be possible to get Candler Field Museum Youth Aviation Program students to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this year? This idea had been discussed among key museum volunteers for a long time. While it was clear that the want and the desire were there, more questions had to be answered. Questions like, How many can we take? How will we get them there? How much would this cost? Thanks to a very successful fund-raising effort headed up by museum member Sue Hutson, funds became available for this trip. The wheels were then put into motion to answer all questions and to make this trip happen. Next, a selection panel formed and selected two students for an all expenses paid trip to AirVenture. The winners were Rachel Dumas and Jacob Gates. With the who and the what answered, the next big question was the how How are we going to get them there and back? Simple let them fly the Aeronca Champ they restored! You got it on Saturday, 23 July, the Youth Program Champ will launch from Peach State for a two-day flight to Oshkosh, WI. Youth program mentors and pilots AC Hutson and Bill Rial will alternate with Rachel and Jacob, planning to arrive Oshkosh on Sunday, 24 July. The group will enjoy AirVenture on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then begin their trip home on Thursday, 28 July, with planned arrival at Peach State late afternoon on Friday, 29 July. 11 The Candler Field Museum Youth Aviation Program is surely about airplanes and the projects the mentors and students are working on. But more importantly, the students are really why the program exists. So, let's look at what some of the students have accomplished recently. Since most of our students are working toward obtaining their Private Pilot Certificates, let s look at those who have already obtained that goal. Both Amanda Denton and Kanyika Mswia obtained that level of certification within the past year. Amanda has also been busy taking college level courses while in her senior year in high school and is now working as a receptionist at a Fixed Base Operator at Tara Field while continuing her education. Kanyika, a high school senior is a member of the Griffin Civil Air Patrol Squadron based at Candler Field. Both of these students will continue their pursuit of advancement in aviation. With a break in school during the summer, some of the students have taken advantage of opportunities presented to them. Students Channing Gray and Eric Harris Jr. both did that recently. Channing was chosen to attend a summer program in Atlanta, sponsored by the Tuskegee Airmen Aviation Career Training ( TAACT ). Upon completing that busy aviation filled session, Channing was one of four cadets, out of forty, chosen to attend the Delta Airlines National Flight Academy ( NFA ) to be held in late July in Pensacola, FL. His busy aviation summer is not over yet! Eric, also a member of the Griffin CAP Squadron, was selected to attend a week long aviation filled time at Laughlin AFB, in Texas, where he attended ground school with U.S. Air Force personnel. Then he participated in flights in some neat U.S. Air Force aircraft. He had a broad smile on his face when he told us about his Texas trip. Eric is in Phase One of the CFM-YAP Flight Training Curriculum. Another busy student is Cayla McLeod. She is active in our Youth Program in every way. Repairing the aircraft in the shop has earned her the hours necessary to begin the Flight Training Curriculum where she hopes to solo shortly. The neat thing that has enhanced her activities in our program is the recent announcement that she was the recipient of the first High Flight Scholarship, administered by Candler Field Museum, and in memory of Ed Bowlin, a local aviation legend and a long time member of the Candler Field Museum. This scholarship will help with the cost of Cayla's path forward in obtaining her Private Pilots Certificate and beyond. There are two more students that I need to tell you about. They are Rachel Dumas and Jacob Gates. Their upcoming assignment, after being chosen by a board made up of program mentors, is to fly the recently completed Aeronca Champ to the big aviation event, called Air Venture in Oshkosh, Wisc. in late July. This will be a great adventure for both of these students. They will be accompanied in the air by adult mentors A.C. Hutson and Bill Rial. While at Air Venture they will act as Ambassadors for our program where our Champ, Chief and DC-3 aircraft will be displayed. Rachel is in Phase One and Jacob is in Phase Three of our Flight Curriculum. We hope to make this kind of trip an annual event as a reward for students who stand out in our shop aircraft restoration activities. So you can see that while all of our students are taking advantage of the opportunity to learn aircraft restoration in the regular shop sessions and flight

12 training on our program aircraft, many are taking advantage of additional aviation activities described above. I could tell you more but that's enough for now. Oh, one last thing; we need to thank all of our mentors for creating the opportunities for the CFM-YAP students, and thanks too, to those who have contributed tools and monetary support to our program. 13 FLABOB AIRPORT OWNER PASSES Tom Wathen, owner of Flabob Airport in Riverside, CA, passed away on June 20th. Tom was 86 when he died. He was responsible for saving California's historic Flabob Airport from becoming a housing development. He went on to establish the Tom Wathen Center, a nonprofit organization based at the airport with a mission to educate young people. Tom was a very active aviation supporter and owned several airplanes including the 1934 de Havilland DH.88 pictured below. He will be missed. FIRST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT The first High Flight Aviation Scholarship was awarded by retired Delta Air Lines Captain, Connie Bowlin during Vintage Day. This scholarship program was founded in 2014 in memory of aviation legend Ed Bowlin. The intent of this scholarship

14 program is to provide an avenue to reach deserving young adults and to provide them with assistance in beginning an aviation career. The first recipient of the program was Cayla McLeod. Cayla is a member of the Candler Field Museum's Youth Aviation Program. Cayla is currently receiving flight instruction in the Youth Program's Aeronca Champ. She will receive a total of $1,500 to be used to earn her Private Pilot license. Candler Field Museum is privileged to be a part of the High Flight Aviation Scholarship program. NEW BUILDING TO BE ERECTED The hangar pictured above was taken at the original Candler Field in Atlanta during the late 1920's. The hangar was initially called the "Pitcairn Hangar" and was used by Pitcairn Aviation, the forerunner of Eastern Air Lines. The company started with the formation of the Pitcairn Flying School and Passenger Service in 1924 and built this particular hangar in The company was initially formed to manufacture airplanes - hence the Pitcairn Mailwing, etc. The aircraft were built mainly for air mail service. Candler Field Museum will begin construction on a replica of this hangar within the next few months. The new hangar will be located next to the Doug Davis hangar

16 and will be used to expand our current Youth Aviation Program. We project a cost of $230,000 to complete this facility. We will provide more information next month on a fund raising drive that we plan to launch to raise the needed money. NIEUPORT 11 PROGRESS In a joint venture between the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and the Candler Field Museum, a Nieuport 11 will be restored to flying condition. The replica was built by Gordon and Kay Bainbridge in the 1960 s and flown at Old Rhinebeck until an unfortunate accident thirty years later.

17 Craftsmen at Candler Field will bring the Nieuport back to life. It will remain on display in Georgia for a period of three years before returning to Old Rhinebeck. It will be powered by the original LeRhone rotary engine. Anyone interested in assisting with the restoration should contact Brian Karli at the museum. Please CLICK HERE to view progress on the restoration. CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB The Candler Field Flying Club remains very active. Over 100 hours were flown in June with two aircraft. Currently, the club Citabria is down for maintenance as is one of the Cessna 172's. We hope to have the 172 back in the air by the end of this month. The Citabria landing gear has been repaired and now the fuselage has to be prepared for new fabric covering. We plan to have this airplane flying within a couple of months. The club is also looking for an Aeronca Champ to place in our fleet.

Members of the Marine Corps detachment of the Marine Corps Light Helicopter Squadron visited Barnstormer's Grill July 7th to make a presentation. Major Charles Crownover and Captain Jared Housand presented the restaurant with a plaque to recognize Barnstormer's Grill for their service to the Marine Corps unit. Members of the unit have been flying into Peach State Airport regularly to dine at our facility. We provide discounts to military personnel in uniform. The helicopter unit is moving from Robins Air Force Base to another location. We will miss having their Cobra and Huey helicopters visit with us. We wish them the very best in their move.
