We re busy testing some pretty exciting items right now. I have learned a lot about radar lately, and there are a few interesting things that I can relate. This month, I thought I d share something you might want to keep in mind while you re flying in the area. Doug Newton always recommended that those of us with a low total number of hours in our logbooks add legs of over 50 nautical miles to as many of our flights as possible. That s because a lot of people have a tough time accruing enough cross-country hours to meet the minimums for more advanced certificates. It s also just great practice. It so happens that a lot of the familiar local airports are a little bit too close to count. For example, El Paso International is 46 statute miles from Las Cruces International. After going through the Anthony gap, following controller instructions, etc., you d certainly end up flying 50 nautical miles to land there, but it s only straight-line distance that matters to the FAA. Deming is 47 statute miles, so that doesn t work either. Sometimes, I ll do a leg down to Columbus (0NM0 being my airfield of choice down there), as part of a longer time-building trip to Lordsburg (50.3 statute miles) or some other place. I ve gotten kind of used to the KLRU to 0NM0 route because of this. Doug also recommended calling Albuquerque Center and asking for flight following whenever doing that kind of remote route. Choosing that option keeps you in contact with civilization, while allowing more flexibility than filing a specific flight plan. That s what I do most of the time on the way to Columbus. On a few occasions, I have just tuned up the Center frequency and listened in, without specifically asking for flight following. Probably not very smart. 3

4 A few months ago, I was on my way to Columbus, listening to Center, and paying more attention to the VOR display in my handheld than was warranted. About 12 miles out from CUS, I glanced down at my transponder and noticed that the IDENT light was illuminated. After 30 seconds or so, it was still on, which I thought was strange. I pushed the IDENT button, and it stayed lit for at least another minute or so. Thinking it might have failed, I shut the transponder off for a few seconds to try and clear it. Then when I turned it back on, the IDENT light came back too. Center seemed to not be very busy, so I called and asked if they could verify that I was transmitting altitude. The altitude they were seeing was the same as indicated on my altimeter, so I figured the transponder was just being flaky, and continued on. I made a turn over 0NM0 toward Deming, and eventually the IDENT light went out. Then it occurred to that the Customs and Border Protection aerostat was just a few miles off to my left. Hmm In talking with some people at work who are familiar with such things, I think the aerostat is the explanation. Authorities monitor the border very closely in that area to prevent illegal crossings and airspace violations. I might have looked pretty suspicious. To begin with, a 140 does not have a very large radar signature, as GA airplanes go. And from the aerostat point of view, I may have been popping in an out of the clutter they get from the Florida mountains. Maybe I looked even more suspicious when I briefly shut down my transponder. I suppose the aerostat must have had a constant lock on me, and the IDENT light was an indication that they were continuously interrogating my transponder. Is that what it feels like when a MIG has a radar boresight on you? My contacts recommend always being on either some sort of formal flight plan, or in contact with Albuquerque Center when operating close to the border. 8 (World Ultralight Fly In) For the past few years, there has been a World Ultralight Fly In. Event is announced on Facebook and people that have ultralight through light two place aircraft go for a flight and take a picture of themselves with a date stamp. In the end, participants get a certificate and lots of pictures from around the world of people enjoying flying. As its only on one day, some people will be unable to fly because of weather, but that is part of the fun of the fly in. Three of us were able to represent New Mexico this year, Chris, Tracey, and myself. Here are our pictures. 8
