3 Page2/ DAY 4: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 TEMA-ACCRA: Accra Tour-Visit Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum & Jamestown. Breakfast at leisure. Morning Accra city tour including the W. E. B. DuBois Center for Pan Africanisn. National Theatre, George Padmore Library, Independence Square & Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, a park dedicated to the first President of Ghana. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, 1 st President of Ghana, and his wife Madam Fathia Nkrumah are laid to rest in a tomb at the park. Afternoon visit to Jamestown, the first fishing port of Ghana. The tour ends with a shopping trip the Arts Center. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Prepare for the next day trip to the Ashanti Region. Accommodation: Royal Nick Hotel or Similar Meals: Breakfast /Dinner Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Accra Jamestown, old fishing port DAY 5: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 - ACCRA/KUMASI-ASHANTI REGION: Journey to the Ashanti Region, the Cultural Center of Ghana. Visit the Ashanti Craft Villages. Very early breakfast and depart for Kumasi, Capital of the legendary Ashanti Nation and the Cultural heart of Ghana. On our way, we shall visit the three famous Ashanti craft villages for shopping and witness craft making demonstrations Bonwire, the Kente weaving village; Ahwiaa, the woodcarvers village and; Ntonso, the home of Adinkra. These visits will afford you the opportunity to see how African crafts are made and to buy directly from the artisans who make them. We ll continue to Kumasi and check into our hotel. Dinner. 4 Page 3/ DAY 6: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 KUMASI: : Visit the Ashanti Palace Museum & the Kejetia Open Air Market. Breakfast and depart for Central Region. Upon arrival in Kumasi, we will visit to the Manhyia Palace (home of the Ashanti King). This old palace which is now a Museum contains a collection of historical Asantehene relics dating as far back as the first King of the Ashantis; His Majesty Nana Osei Tutu Opemsoo, who was crowned in Afterwards we will experience the hustle and bustle of the Kejetia Market, acclaimed as the largest open-air market in West Africa, with 45,000 stores/stalls. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Prepare for the next day trip to the Central Region. Accommodation: Miklin Hotel or Similar Meals: Breakfast/Dinner The Royal King of the Ashanti Nation Kejetia Market DAY 7: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 KUMASI/CAPE COAST: Journey to Cape Coast to visit the River of Last Bath & Cape Coast Slave Castle. Early breakfast. Drive south into the Central Region, stopping at Assin Manso to visit the African Diaspora Ancestral Shrine and the River of Last Bath. It was here that African men and women from the north of Ghana and surrounding countries - who were captured by slave traders - were brought to the Donko Nsuo river to be washed and inspected before being sent to the nearby slave castles of Cape Coast and Elmina. Continue the drive to Cape Coast for an afternoon visit of the Cape Coast Castle museum and the Castle dungeons. Experience the dark dungeons where slaves were held for months and then forced onto slave ships that took them to the Americas and Caribbean Islands to work as slaves. 5 Page 4/ Coconut Grove Beach Resort DAY 8: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 - CAPE COAST/ELMINA: Elmina Slave Castle and Kakum National Park. Breakfast at leisure. Morning departure for tour of the Elmina Slave Castle (the oldest slave castle in West Africa). A tour guide will lead you through the dungeons where slaves were held before they passed through the Door of No Return to the ships carrying them to the Americas. It is an emotional and often life-changing experience as one can almost feel the presence of the slaves in their iron shackles and hear voices from the past crying out in anguish. Afternoon trip to the Kakum National Park. Experience the rainforest of Ghana at one of only 3 locations in Africa with a forest canopy walkway. Walk across the bridges hanging ft above the forest floor, connected by seven tree top stops, with views out over the forest. Return to the hotel. Prepare for the next day trip to Accra, with stop in village of Otuam. Dinner. Overnight. Accommodation: Coconut Grove Beach Resort or similar Breakfast/Dinner Elmina Castle Door of No Return Kakum National Park canopy walkway Day 9: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 - CAPE COAST/OTUAM/ACCRA: Check out of the hotel and depart for the small fishing village of Otuam and the palace of King Peggy, Nana Amuah Afenyi. Experience a libation ceremony with King Peggy s councilmen. See the fishing boats down on the beach and the fish being sorted. Visit schools and a health center of the village that was transformed by the fairy tale story of an American secretary at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C. who became the female king of Otuam. (King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed an African Village by Peggielene Bartels and Eleanor Herman. Lunch. Continue to Accra hotel for check-in. After freshening up, we ll proceed to a selected restaurant or a Private Home in the city for a farewell dinner. Return to the hotel. Overnight.
