2 About the Education Target Audience: Physicians and other medical professionals who engage in winter wilderness activities, including mountain travel, who counsel individuals who take part in such activities, or who practice in locations in which they are likely to encounter individuals who have been injured in such activities. a personal Message Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to: Prevent, diagnose, and manage illnesses and injuries in a mountain environment. Demonstrate increased knowledge and skill in treating high altitude illness, hypothermia and cold injuries, and wound management. Understand avalanche rescue and evacuation of injured persons. Accreditation: The Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The WMS designates this educational activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses: Most state Boards of Registered Nurses accept AMA Category 1 Credit as meeting continuing education requirements for license renewal. Nurses should check with their state board regarding use of CME credit. Physician Assistants: The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts Category 1 CME approval from organizations accredited by the ACCME. Wilderness Medical Society: If you are not a member of the Wilderness Medical Society, please visit wms.org to learn about the organization and how to become a member and get involved. Academy of Wilderness Medicine: Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine is designed for individuals who want to be acknowledged for their professional achievement in Wilderness Medicine, and wish to validate their training for their patients and clients. The Wilderness Medical Society serves as a clearinghouse for agencies, employers, and the general public wishing to verify that Fellows have met educational criteria in the discipline. (Individuals should realize that neither the Academy nor the Society vouch for the competency of any individual, only that he/ she has met established educational criteria.) WMS Members, Colleagues and Friends We invite you to join us in February at the WMS Winter Meeting: Wilderness and Mountain Medicine. This is not your typical ski conference, not even your typical wilderness medicine ski conference. This is a unique winter mountain meeting where you can ski, snowboard and snowshoe in beautiful Park City, Utah! But it is first and foremost about mountain medicine, wilderness education, Fellowship (in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine) and fellowship a gathering of like-minded souls. This year s WMS winter conference will provide the most up-to-date information in the fields of avalanche medicine, hypothermia and cold injuries, high-altitude illnesses, expedition and travel medicine, and more. We have assembled the world s leading experts in mountain and wilderness medicine to teach the core curriculum. Two intensive, experiential pre-conferences are being offered Advanced Wilderness Life Support and Level 1 Avalanche Course. During the conference, the optional workshops will provide you with necessary skills to survive in winter conditions as well as to manage common wilderness and winter emergencies. And the evening presentations will enlighten, inspire and entertain you. The Wilderness Medical Society celebrated its 25th anniversary and the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (AWM) inducted its second class of Fellows this past July. Even in these tough economic times, membership in the WMS is on the rise. And it is because of the tangibles of our mission advancement of healthcare, research, and education related to wilderness medicine and the intangible benefits of community and fellowship that our members share and our meetings offer. As Tom Meyer of Alabama, new WMS member and AWM Fellow candidate, wrote after attending his first meeting in July, This meeting was an amazing catalyst that will drive and maintain my profession and passion for years to come! We couldn t have said it better. Whether you re an accomplished expedition doctor or just beginning to gain an interest in wilderness medicine, the WMS Winter Meeting provides an exceptional opportunity for you to sharpen your knowledge and skills and to form new and lasting friendships. We hope you will join us this February in Utah and experience the Greatest Snow on Earth! Scott McIntosh, MD, MPH, FAWM Conference Chair Colin Grissom, MD, FAWM President, Wilderness Medical Society WMS WINTER MEETING: WILDERNESS AND MOUNTAIN MEDICINE offers up to a maximum of credits of the required 100 total credits of training and experience.
