The majestic snow-capped peaks of John Muir s celebrated Range of Light provide the ideal backdrop for current evidence-based topics in Wilderness Medicine. Don t miss this opportunity to connect and collaborate with top educators and fascinating guest lecturers at this intimate conference. The High Sierra Wilderness Medicine conference is designed to meet the needs of those who may encounter life-threatening situations with limited resources. This includes not only emergency physicians, but also internists, family practitioners, backcountry rangers, and members of the search and rescue community. Through both lectures and skills workshops, we will explore topics including survival and field treatment of environmental illness, rescue techniques, and lessons learned from medical delivery in austere settings ranging from the Gobi Desert to the large Western National Parks. This course is proudly presented by the University of California San Francisco-Fresno Wilderness Medicine Program. PRE-COURSE OBJECTIVES OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the High Sierra Wilderness Medicine Conference, attendees should be able to: Apply evidence-based management options of medical problems that are unique to the wilderness setting including high altitude illness, environmental exposure, lightning injuries, and toxic plant ingestions; Improve necessary skills for remote medical care including patient assessment, trauma care, orthopaedic manipulation, wilderness improvisation, and pearls of basic survival; Incorporate leadership and teamwork skills in the wilderness setting to affect improved patient outcomes. Upon completion of the High Sierra Wilderness Medicine Pre-Course Workshops, attendees should be able to: Wilderness Navigation: Identify map symbols, topographic features, and compass markings; Interpret different types of maps, knowing what information is obtainable from each; Demonstrate taking bearings, navigating a course, and triangulating using landmarks.
