KUDOS Congratulations to Donna Flood on becoming President of the Foothills Trail Club at our Fall Potluck on October 18th, in accordance with our 2014 elections which took place at the annual membership dinner in April. Donna has always been very active with FTC and the FLTC, and most recently was the lead organizer for the FLTC Fall Campout. Donna is extremely knowledgeable of issues pertinent to FTC and has managed FTC publicity for many years. We look forward to working with Donna in her new role as President. A huge thank you to Jeanne Moog who stepped down after serving as our President for the past 2 1/2 years. Jeanne did a fantastic job during her tenure and we appreciate her leadership and sage counsel. Jeanne will remain active in FTC and we know we ll see her on the trail. NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Foothills Board of Directors met on September 29 at the Julia Reinstein Library in Cheektowaga. Meeting highlights include: FTC currently has 228 members. This is down slightly from last year, due in part to the CT end to end participants who joined to hike this event. Reminder postcards to those who have not renewed have been sent out. The Rock City project is complete. For those planning to hike the Blue Trail on CT 4, landowner permission was lost and part of the trail is now on a railroad track. Stay safe Some members are experiencing issues with downloading the electronic version of TALES. It appears this may be a problem with MAC computers. The next Board meeting will be on November 24, Foothills Trail Club 2

4 TALES September 2014 FLTC FALL WEEKEND AT CHAUTAUQUA Overview The 2014 Fall Weekend at Chautauqua was a success due to the efforts of many members who served as hike leaders, hospitality organizers, and check-in volunteers, along with Dee McCarthy, Myra Lucero, my not so silent partner Jim Flood, and yours truly. The weather cooperated for two glorious days of hiking, sightseeing, biking and almost held out for the third day. The accommodations were clean, spacious, and the food was really good. We have many dessert aficionados (I m in that mix) who were not disappointed with ice cream sundaes and lots of pie. My has been filled with many thank you s from participants all over New York State. For many, it was their first trip to Chautauqua and they enjoyed the charm of the Institution and the hikes in the rolling countryside. We have to acknowledge Mike Schlicht and Brock Carmichael for their end to end hike of Allegany State Park in one day which is a feat not too many of us could accomplish. Our speakers, Jonathan Schmitz, archivist and historian of the Chautauqua Institution, and Ed K a s p e re k of Niagara S e a r c h a n d R e s c u e g a v e u s i n s i g h t s into history of the lake and how to stay safe on the trail. Search and Rescue has come a long way in a few years to fill a niche that s a v e s m a n y c l i e n t s. Following Ed s advice to be prepared and that everything in your pack must have dual use will prevent mishaps and help hikers out of what could happen. This event is one of several planned through the years, across the state, and on the trails that the Finger Lakes Trail Conference coordinate, maintain and protect. Myra Lucero Myra Lucero Carol Kobrin Our thanks go to Mrya Lucero for the Happy Hour on Friday and to Dick Hubbard and the Forever Society for the Saturday reception. The Forever Society is funding protection of the trail. The paths you hike are on public and private property and volunteer easements will allow future hikers to enjoy the same vistas and views that we see today on the trail and not on Foothills Trail Club 3

5 TALES September 2014 a road. Again, many thanks go to all those who made it possible for their volunteer efforts, and to the Chautauqua Institution for their excellent facility. Carol Kobrin Donna Flood Thank you After almost two years of planning the Fall Outing that Foothills hosted for the Finger Lakes Trail Conference at the Chautauqua Institution, we are happy to announce that it was a success? We had 133 attendees, beautiful weather and a fabulous location for the event. It was definitely a group effort. The event was successful only because of our loyal and dedicated group of volunteers. You all deserve a big thank you. Myra Lucero Choosing Chautauqua, New York for the location of the Fall Outing proved to be a Social hour on the deck of Bellinger Hall. Foothills Trail Club 4

10 TALES September 2014 A MESSAGE FROM OUR WEBMASTER Some of our members have been having a wee problem with downloading TALES. The TALES is sent and/or posted in PDF format. This is the industry standard because it allows people who have many different computers and operating systems to access the same files. Unfortunately, Apple, Inc., and Adobe (the maker and copyright holder of PDF format) do not seem to see eye to eye on things. If you are using a MAC or other Apple product, do not try to use Internet Explorer. Try Safari or, better yet, Chrome, as your Internet browser. These browsers can be downloaded for free from the Internet. And be sure to go to Adobe.com and download the correct version of PDF reader. There are many choices on the lower right side of the first page after you go to Get the right version PDF files are used by millions of users. It is not the fault of the PDF file. If you have issues after carefully following the above, do not hesitate to contact webmaster@foothillstrailclub.org by , and your question will be answered.
