However, we did have some issues with bees. Numerous people were stung. It seems that the bees were housed in an old log that someone had inadvertently kicked and bingo the bees were everywhere. Fortunately our sag people came to the rescue and took some hikers to their cars. We are happy to say that everyone who got the unwelcome attention from the bees is in fine health. This event just verifies the wisdom of being prepared for just about anything whenever a hiker ventures out to enjoy the gifts of Mother Nature. E2E hike # 8 August 27 th, 2011 Sunshine and blue skies were the order of the day for this hike. This hike brought the hikers through the previously infamous Holland ravines. The hikers enjoyed the many trail improvements that resulted from four Alleycat work projects. All in all, everyone enjoyed another great hiking day. E2E hike # 9 Sept. 24 th, 2011 What a great day for this season s last hike and picnic! Great weather, wonderful people and a delicious and bountiful picnic - what more could we ask for! Our sag people took care of all the slicing, dicing & chopping of the fresh vegetables and fruits that we served at the picnic in addition to getting everything ready for the hikers as they came thru Erie County Forest. A special thanks to Kathy Laynor who has helped out on every sag (9 sags)! A huge thanks to everyone involved in this hiking series: Pam Bassett, Bill Boehm, John Burnham, Sally Castren, Joe Chaya, Kathy Clerkin, Susan Collier, Donna Flood, Kathy Foote, Donna Frantz, Marcia Haslett, Kathy Laynor, Kalista Lehrer, Carol Mallon, Dee McCarthy, Jeanne Moog, Frank Occhiuto, Melanie Okoniewski, Gus Phillips, Gloria Potzler, Florence Rott, Mike Schlicht, Shari Senefelder, Denise Smith, Connie Umland, Carol Walz, Quinn Wright, Great job everyone looking forward to 2012 and the end of the series. Jake, Mike & Annette

4 Help Wanted Landowner Coordinators needed!! Please consider helping out! Landowner Relations Team We need members to come forward to help out and take over a map and be landowner coordinators. WE need at least three people each person would be responsible for ONE map only. Even better, if more people volunteer, we could split a map between two people. By taking responsibility for one map the task would be spread out and the club would have a team effort to accomplish this very significant task. Most likely members have seen this help wanted listing in the Tales before so now is the time to step forward and help out. I believe somehow our mission (as per our Constitution) "to build, maintain, enhance and promote the Conservation Trail as a footpath" has fallen by the wayside. Too many of our members are only hiking, strolling, or walking and not giving back to the Foothills Trail Club. We need landowners who will permit the trail to be on their property. If we continue to ignore the vital task of maintaining positive relations with the property-owners, we risk having a trail that is only on the roads. Dave Potzler has agreed to maintain contact with the landowners on Map 4 and Annette Brzezicki already works with landowners on maps 5 & 6. Jake Kern has agreed to maintain contact with the landowners on Map 7. Annette is willing to teach anyone who volunteers how to do the job. We need volunteers to work with landowners on CT maps 2, 3, and 8. Basically, this is not a hard job! A landowner coordinator introduces him/herself and the club to the landowner (No phone calls please) and thanks the landowner for allowing us to have the trail on the property. If the trail is not on the property, the coordinator asks permission to have the trail on their property. If the answer is Yes, that is wonderful news. If the answer is No, then the coordinator moves on. We do not pressure landowners. Anyone who agrees to take on this vital task will receive an updated list of landowners some have been contacted and some have not. Each coordinator will receive detail maps showing each parcel of land. Landowner coordinators contact all of the landowners, especially those that have not yet been contacted. Annette says that In my experience most that have not been contacted are aware of the trail and the orange or white blazes. Some are very new landowners and have just bought the property while others have been there for years. I m willing to work with anyone who steps forward to take on a map. David & Gloria Potzler will update our landowners list whenever a team member provides them the information Contact Annette Brzezicki if you are willing to help. Landowner Coordinators needed!! Please consider helping out! Annette Brzezicki, anet42brz@roadrunner.com Trail Steward There are several trail steward and assistant openings on Maps If you are able to take on a section, please contact Dave Potzler at dpotzler66@wildblue.net or MEMBERSHIP In a separate mailing a current membership listing will be sent to all members who receive the Tales by means of the U.S. Postal Service

5 Sixth Annual Conservation Trail Fund Appeal Dear friends and fellow club members, Hikers on the Conservation Trail or the Finger Lakes Trail have certainly had their lives enriched. We have met people and been places we might never have gotten to know on our own. Most of us have shared many laughs and conversations, some heavy-hearted and some light-hearted, with our long-time or new-found friends. Sharing a love of hiking with other like-minded people is a wonderful experience. And, how did this all start? Some outdoor enthusiasts who liked hiking in the woods thought, 'We need a trail!', and they built it. The Conservation Trail came out of such a humble start and has continued to positively affect many lives for many years. In 2012 the Conservation Trail will celebrate its 50 th Anniversary. The mission of the Foothills Trail Club is to build and maintain a footpath forever! To fulfill that mission requires many, many volunteer hours for trail maintenance a cost in many hours of labor given out of love for the trail. We always need trail workers! Not only do we need volunteers to fulfill that mission, but we also NEED money to pay for trail improvements such as puncheons, steps, bridges, picnic benches, fire rings, privies and lean-to s. This year s project at Hunters Creek required more than $5000 and could not have been accomplished without the very generous support of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference which paid for more than half of the costs. We have projects planned for the next few years that will cost well over $7000 and we have no more money in our trail account. Your help is desperately needed!! If you, like us, feel an obligation to continue this legacy please donate to the Sixth Annual Conservation Trail Fund. The dollars set aside in this fund will be used only for the good of the trail. To make a donation, no matter how small, is an honor and not a burden. Please join us in helping to make the task easier as we continue the rich heritage of maintaining the Conservation Trail! Foothills is not a 501-(c) (3) organization If you want to your contribution to this fund to be tax deductible, complete this form and make your check payable to the Finger Lakes Trail Conference. Mail your form and check to the FLTC at, 6111 Visitor Center Road, Mt. Morris, NY Mark restricted to Conservation Trail in the memo section.
