4 4 Introduction INTRODUCTION The roof of of Wal es... Sno wdo ns umm it There s enough here to keep visitors busy for months even years. The main focus may well be mountains after all, Snowdonia is home to the highest peaks in Southern Britain. But the coastline comes into play too all 200 miles of it, encompassing the wild beauty of the Cambrian Coast and the Llŷn Peninsula, a spectacular finger of land pointing into the Irish Sea. Add into the mix a huge range of outdoor activities, attractions, globally famous historic sites and a unique culture and the result is one of the most complete, comprehensive and versatile tourism destinations in the world, that (forgive the cliché, but it s true in this case) really has something for everyone. The big picture Start at the top of Snowdon it s the obvious choice. At 3560ft/1085m, it s the highest summit in Wales and England. You can walk there if you want. Or catch the train. As far as the eye can see you re surrounded by rugged, jagged peaks and plunging valleys. The peak gives its name to the Snowdonia National Park, an 823-square-mile expanse that stretches south as far as another famous Welsh summit, legendary Cader Idris, and east to mountainringed Bala. But it s a mistake to think that the region is all high and mighty. Sheltered wooded vales thread in between the highlands, and along the coast there are huge beaches and dreamy estuaries where mountains meet the sea. And along Snowdon s Arm, the dramatic Llŷn Peninsula, you ll find one of Wales s official Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. So what s happening? Snowdonia Mountains and Coast is full of fresh air and the feel good factor. Ask the Victorians. They discovered the place and turned the area into one of the world s first tourist destinations. Ask the pioneer climbers, who cut their teeth on the fearsome slabs of the Llanberis Pass. Ask the team that conquered Everest for the first time they trained here. But Snowdonia can be as macho or as mellow as you want.

5 5 Brochure title 5 Por thd inl lae n, Lly Llŷn ˆn Pen enins insula Cyc lin ng the Maw dda ch trail, Bar mouth to Dol gellau lau It has serious outdoor challenges and gentle walks, exciting zip lines (the longest in the Northern Hemisphere, actually) and charming narrow-gauge railways. There s also a deep heritage and culture that encompasses everything from one of the world s oldest living languages to UNESCO world-class castles and dramatic slate mines from a rich industrial past. The outdoor activities scene is as good as it gets. Mountain bikers worship the trails in the Coed y Brenin Forest Park and Blaenau Ffestiniog. Walkers can follow mountain tracks or sections of the new Wales Coast Path. And for those who like to get their feet wet, there s sailing and canoeing, paddleboarding and surfing along the coast and in a multitude of lakes and rivers.
