2 David Newill USAFA 94 FTS SRT Airsailing Sports Class Competition, Reno, NV I figured since all of you have had a huge impact on the soaring program at USAFA (some recently, and some for over 40 years!!), I'd like to keep you posted on just a few things that your USAFA Cadet Sailplane Racing Team have been doing over the last 2 months: - They're currently flying their third competition of the summer (Moriarty, Parowan and Reno), they've been averaging about 240 miles per flight per day at Reno, and they've accomplished these goals with 5AF being down for a wing repair from Parowan (so they have 4 planes flying). - They now hold the USAFA distance record for miles flown in a season at over 25,000 OLC miles - They are somewhere over 50 SSA and FAI badges and badge legs for the season to include 5 silver and 5 gold FAI badges (to be claimed next month if Rollin allows!) - They are claiming 16 state youth records in CO, TX, NM, and NV since Apr - The cadet seniors are currently ranked: Dave Dunkel 113 (Top 12%), Ryan Moran 126, Sam Harms 150, Tom Swinchoski 152, Chris Olson 161 and Rob Gasper 221 in the US SSA On Line Contest (OLC) Champion ranking out of 940 pilots. - All of the cool stuff that they've done is in Cadet Swinchoski's below, and I also added the inputs to our 306 FTG Team of the Quarter to the bottom of this which has some amazing team and USAFA firsts. By the way, they won that too. - Keep in mind, these cadets all got cross-country qualified in Apr/May 2011 and they still have Aug and Sep to fly back at USAFA! All of this could not have been done without the mentoring that you've all done through the years and I just wanted to say thanks on behalf of the team!
3 6AF won the day at Reno, smashing the next closest competitor by 70 points!!! Not to mention, we are now above 25,000 miles, having demolished our team goal of flying the circumference of the globe: Aircraft/Sorties flown: 4AF, 1 sortie x 3.8 (Major Hohreiter/C2C Burns OLC Miles) 6AF, 1 sortie x 3.7 hrs (C1C Moran OLC Miles) 7AF, 1 sortie x 3.5 hrs (C1C Swinchoski OLC Miles) 8AF, 1 sortie x 4.6 hrs (C1C Gasper OLC Miles) Total of 870 OLC miles today - with four planes! State Records (NV): -Youth Multi-Place Out-and-Return, 3-Turnpoint, Free Triangle (C1C Dave Dunkel and C2C Brew Burns) -Youth Single-Place 3-Turnpoint, Free Triangle, Out-and-Return Distance to a Goal (C1C Rob Gasper and C1C Chris Olson) Federation Aeronautique Internationale Badges Earned: - C1C Ryan Moran, C1C Chris Olson, C1C Tom Swinchoski, C1C Sam Harms and C1C Rob Gasper all earned their gold badge climbs (3,000 m) - meaning the entire firstie class has their gold badges!!! -C1C Chris Olson and C1C Rob Gasper both earned their diamond badge goal legs (a predeclared distance of 186 miles)!!! Operations: - Ground crew and pilots showed up at the airport at 1000 to attend the pilot's meeting as well as prepare for operations. - All the Air Force gliders launched from , starting on task around 1415 to allow lift conditions to build a bit more in the area around Airsailing. - All gliders climbed out of the local area and set out on task. As they headed south all the gliders hooked up with a strong cloud street running south to north, flying deep into the southern turnpoint before running the cloud street back to the north and hitting a turnpoint just to the north of Airsailing. Real-Time Shared SPOT Satellite Tracker Web Page: - glid=0jue83ngvqek5lhbdympgxpackp3ymspr Soaring Society OLC Standings: The Cadet Sailplane Racing Team is ranked: 14 out of 149 soaring clubs in the United States (Puts us in the top 9.4%) 16 out of 167 soaring clubs in North America (Puts us in the top 9.6%) 114 out of 1,340 soaring clubs Worldwide (Puts us in the top 8.5%)

They were flown between 30 May and 11 Jun 12. Of the flights flown in the last 25 days: - C1C Dunkel's 30 May flight is the farthest distance ever flown away from USAFA in a sailplane (343 mile flight was 117 miles away from
5 AFA) and... - C1C Olson/C1C Moran's flight on the same day was the farthest distance a TG-10B has ever been flown away from USAFA (58 miles away south to Silvercliffe, CO), and the 2nd farthest flight in the history of USAFA Soaring in a TG-10B (L-23 Super Blanik) at miles (lost to 1st place by 887 feet). This sailplane also didn't have wingtips! The SRT is currently filing for State Records in 2 States (7 in New Mexico, 6 in Colorado, 4 General, 9 Youth records) earned since 4 Jun 12!!! This is the 1st time we have been able to claim any State Soaring records since These are the highest the SRT has ever ranked in the Soaring Society of America On-Line contest since its inception in Mr. Mark F. Soaring has been very popular here in Middle, Tennessee since the early 60's. The founder of soaring here in Tennessee was Garland Pack. Garland used two WWII TG-3's and two modified J3-cubs to get the job done, and began cranking out pilots like Dick Butler, Rand Baldwin, Bill and Kathy Mcfarlane, and many many more. Eagleville is just south of the music city Nashville. A highlight to club activities is a standing invitation to have a booth at the Tennessee Air Show held each year at Smyrna, Tennessee. We were first invited in 2011 (Mother's Day weekend) when the Air Force Thunderbirds preformed their breathtaking stunts. The smell of jet fuel had nothing on our club's display of sailplanes. Many people asked questions about soaring during the big acts. In the spring of 2012 of May (12.13) this year we were back again handing out flyers and giving away in a drawing fashion a free ride as to further their interest. This year the Navy Blue's were stirring up the noise. The most questions that were asked: "How does it fly with no engine?" "Where is the motor?" "How do you get it up and back down?" And the kids all wanted to get in and sit down in the glider. Tim Murphy and I are eagerly awaiting word to start preparing for the 2013 Air Show. The Club is growing as many power pilots transition to soaring to beat the cost of fuel. Please stop in if you are traveling, and see what soaring is all about. Eagleville Soaring Club.
