I had three great days of riding ( if you have never ridden in John Day make time to do so). While there I got the chance to ride with Congressman Greg Walden, I found him to be a down to earth and a nice guy to talk to. I spoke with him about snowmobiling and how much all of us here in Southern Oregon enjoy our sport. He told me that we are right on track with our letters and petitions to our representatives in Washington D.C. He did add that we could also contact our state legislators to make sure that we gain their support at the state level. One other item from the OSSA convention, Dobe Griffin was voted in as our District 5 Director at Large. As I write this letter we just finished another successful Mt. Bailey $3000. I would like to personally thank all of our sponsors, our volunteers, and especially Paul Hildebrand for all the hard work he does for this event. This weekend will be our first and hopefully annual four club play day. All district 5 clubs will be present and this should be a lot of fun. We have already had to make adjustments as the meadow looks more like a snow covered lake, but the play day should still be a success. For those of you that attended or sent your proxy money for the Candlelighters Pie Auction, it was again a fantastic evening. We raised a little over $ This once again shows that this club, even in tough economic times, will always come together to support this very worthy cause. The check will be presented at the March meeting. Please attend. We also have planned our annual Candlelighter ride for March 13th at Thousand Springs. This will be a Chili and Hot dog feed please bring a side dish. As usual this will be a wonderful event. As we get close to the end of the season I always like to remind everyone that this is your club, please come to myself, or any board member with suggestions or comments to make the next season bigger and better. (it is very apparent that we all need to work on and improve our snow dance for next season) In closing, a very personal note. Many of you have asked how our grandson Matthew is doing. He is doing about the same and he is scheduled for brain mapping in Phoenix AZ in March. Please know that Lori and I thank you very much for your thoughts and your prayers. What a wonderful group of friends! And by the time you read this we will be grand parents for the 7th time. Carson Gilbert Curry is scheduled to arrive on Feb. 19, Dennis Jordan

2 Wilderness Fight Update The wilderness fight is ongoing. Keep writing letters and getting the petitions signed and turned in! David Jordan and Brian Gabaldon have gone to several meetings this month with concerned citizen groups in the valley and are gaining support for the cause. On February 27th there will be a joint statewide meeting at Diamond Lake Lodge between many interested parties like SAWS, Blue Ribbon Coalition, OSSA, and other local groups like the MRA, Cattlemen s Association and us. Our aim is to coordinate our efforts and bring more parties to the table to make a more unified and large front. We are being noticed and staying in front of this issue with your help! Groomers Corner Sure feels like early summer. We have done some grooming this month. Even with the wimpy snowfall this season, we have been keeping 1000 Springs cleaned up. For the Bailey 3000, we sent two crews towards Hamaker and groomed a great trail around the mountain. We even had enough snow to groom the Crater Creek / Wizard Creek Loop. The low snow level brings me to the next point. I have encountered several times this season some uninvited four wheel drive enthusiasts on our trail system. If you do come across one of these individuals, please stop and let them know that they are in the wrong place. You don t have to get in an argument. Just simply tell them that the Forest Service closes these roads, and they are open for winter recreation only. Thousands of dollars are spent every year to build and maintain winter recreation trails. The three families that I came across didn t have any idea that they were out of bounds. I was polite to them and asked them not do it again. Lastly, it s not too late to start with that snow dance. It would be nice to have a little longer season. I still have groomers that need some seat time for training and the little snow doesn t give us much to work with. So DANCE please! -Jim Gulrich Page 2 ROGUE SNOWMOBILERS

3 FEBRUARY Page 3 Deep Snow Tracks The poker run weekend has come and gone and was not a friendly one to my sled. Don t know why but double hump hill has my number this year. The poker run went well, the riding was excellent and we all had a great time. The Bowman s had trouble with trees as did I. Jim M. tore up the snow and as usual Dennis J. tore it up and possibly his knee as well. I would like to thank everyone who attended my avalanche class and hope it was informative and fun...the riding after wards was good. I believe several of us may have got a get-out-of-a-ticket-free card as there were sheriffs stuck all over the place. I would like to make special note that Brandon D. is really tearing up the slopes...better watch out Albert. Still have not received any s about riding stories know there s plenty out there so send them in. -David Jordan

4 Award Nominations It was brought to my attention that I forgot to write about a little incident in December that could potentially win that person an Outhouse award. So before we all forget our stories for next year s awards, send them in as they happen! 5 Page 5 Once again we had another successful Mount Bailey Poker thanks to all that stepped up and help me run this event. Our turn out and intake was low no thanks to the current economical conditions; however, we need to continue to move forward because we hear nothing but great comments from the folks that attend, constantly thanking us for putting on such a wonderful event. Snowmobilers love to attend family fun events such as the Poker Run and if anything at all it keeps our sport alive for future riders. We ended up selling approx. 380 poker hands and had approx. 125 riders in all. The course was 55 miles long and even with the low snow conditions it took riders to places where they could enjoy some beautiful scenery and off trail riding in the higher elevations. At this time I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all that help put this event on Volunteers and Sponsors included. Every year at the awards presentation I say thank you to all of our Sponsors for getting this event off the ground and this year I forgot to mention 2010 Mt. 8 As I write this, the temperature outside is a balmy 62 degrees.what happened to the winter??? We have had so many great events in the past month. First up was the Avalanche Class and No Host Ride. The class was well attended and everyone had a great time as well as an educational one. Afterwards, many in the class went riding and I understand that Dennis and Dave taught the Sherriff's Poker Run. how to get stuck on a snowmobile!! We had an awesome pie auction this year. It was well attended and we even had the media show up. After everything was counted up, we raised $3,362 for the Candlelighters. Thanks to everyone who brought and bought the pies and thanks to Tami, Travis and Quinton for making the delicious Valentine cookies! The cookies alone brought in $189!! February: Is It Spring Already? And finally, we had our annual Mt. Bailey $3000 Poker Run. Everyone I spoke to had a great time and almost everyone won something! Although it wasn t our best year as a fund raiser, we still sold $2725 in poker hands. Please notice the yellow sleigh in the picture. You may actually see it again since despite Dennis Jordan s best efforts, he was unable to flip it over this year! I also want to mention to those of you who ride with Dobe Griffin, Bob Guthmiller and/or Brian Watson.don t expect a fire it you are lost out in the wilderness with them and need to keep warm. Calling all Boy Scouts. one, the best they could do was a little smoke!! Despite the picture of the search and rescue vehicle stuck in the mushy snow, SAR had a great training session. It was a multi county effort and the vehicles and equipment they brought in was quite impressive. We are always grateful for their help on this event and are so glad that they enjoy coming and can make it a training day as well! Everyo n e headed home before noon on Sunday as the weather wasn t very cooperative and it was raining all day Sunday. Thank goodness the rain stayed away on Saturday! This has been an iffy snow year so far so watch for updates in case the location needs to be changed depending on the snow conditions!

11 Candlelighters Ride The Candlelighter s Ride is fast approaching. It will be on March 13th at Thousand Springs sno-park. As always, we will provide lunch to the kids and their families as well as rides on snowmobiles and in sleighs. Bring your snowmobiles and a side dish to share. Also helpful is to bring any extra helmets you may have for the kids to wear.
