3 About the Annual Tinbergen Institute Conference Starting in 2006, Tinbergen Institute organizes a large annual international conference, in cooperation with TI s research fellows. Fellows are eligible to submit applications to organize this major conference. TI assists in funding and facilitating the conference. The goal of the 1st Tinbergen Conference was to start a series of cutting edge scientific conferences and attracting the best international researchers around targeted themes. Please click here: Organizing committee of the 13th Tinbergen Institute Conference: International Trade and Development are TI fellows Steven Poelhekke (VU Amsterdam), Maarten Bosker (Erasmus University Rotterdam), and Peter Lanjouw (VU Amsterdam). History Tinbergen Institute Tinbergen Institute (TI) is the graduate school and research institute operated jointly by the Schools of Economics and Econometrics of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), University of Amsterdam (UvA) and VU Amsterdam (VU). Founded in 1987, TI is today one of the major economic research institutes in the Netherlands, with more than 200 research fellows and over 220 PhD and MPhil students. Tinbergen Institute is named after Professor Jan Tinbergen, the Dutch Nobel Prize laureate in Economics (1969). TI has offices in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Tinbergen Institute offers a research master program in economics, econometrics and finance, as well as PhD opportunities to an international community of excellent students. TI ensures the high quality of the graduate program by selecting the best researchers and lecturers in economics, econometrics and finance of the three participating schools. In addition, internationally renowned experts are invited to serve as guest lecturers or to present the annual lectures series. As part of its mission to stimulate research, Tinbergen Institute defines quality standards for researchers. Researchers of the three participating Schools of Economics who meet TI s quality standards can become TI research fellows. TI has formed eight research groups, focused on specific fields in economics. With 30 nationalities in the institute and 70% of our students coming from abroad, Tinbergen Institute provides a truly international experience. 3

From Schiphol Airport When arriving directly from Schiphol Airport, you take a direct train to Amsterdam Zuid WTC Train Station, and walk 5 minute to the Symphony building. From Best Western Delphi Hotel Tram line 5, direction Amstelveen/Binnenhof, stop Amsterdam Zuid/WTC Walk from Station Amsterdam Zuid/WTC to Tinbergen Institute Amsterdam Leave the station via exit Zuid. You are now at the Gustav Mahlerplein Cross the square and cross the street ( Gustav Mahlerlaan ) The Tinbergen Institute is located in the Symphony s Offices building The entrance to Tinbergen Institute is the second revolving door on the left, walk up the stairs or use the elevator on the right. The Tinbergen Institute is situated on the first floor Map and directions can be found TI s website: Inside the building The Tinbergen Institutes conference venue is located on the first floor, Gustav Mahlerplein 117, Amsterdam. To find your way inside the building, the following directions may be useful: The 13th Tinbergen Institute s Conference registration/conference desk in the reception area is on the first floor, inside the revolving door, in the reception area. Plenary sessions are held in the and 1.01 room, accessible from the reception area Lunches, Coffee breaks and refreshments will be served in the reception area outside the conference rooms. 7
8 Access to conference activities The name badge that you receive upon registration entitles you to enter the conference and to enjoy complementary coffee and lunch services arranged for participants. We kindly ask you to wear the badge at all conference events. ATM There is an ATM inside the train station. Some stores accepts debit cards only, no cash. Meals Lunch, coffee and tea on arrival and throughout the conference. Lunch, coffee/tea and refreshments will be provided outside the conference room during the breaks in the program. Presentation technology A laptop, beamer, and a white board will be available in all conference rooms for presentations. To avoid the loss of time, hooking up of personal laptops is discouraged. Presenters are invited to the room at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the session, so that presentations can be copied onto the PC before the session starts. Our congress assistant will be happy to assist in case of technical difficulties. Smoking Smoking is prohibited inside the building, in all public buildings, and in all public transportation. Smoking on public transport stations is allowed only in designated smoking areas. Behind Amsterdam Central Station there is a free ferry boat that takes you to the other side. EYE is an impressive white buildings across the IJ and you will see it from the ferry on your left-hand side. There will be signing inside the building to the IJ Lounge room where the dinner takes place. Check contact details on their website: All participants are invited to join the conference dinner at EYE. If you don t have any public transport card we will provide a one-day return ticket. We expect that Dutch participants have a public transport card. Please be invited to join the organizers by public transport to the dinner..
