2 Page 2 Getting to know your Parish Councillors Parish News If you spot any problems in the following areas you can report the defect or problem to Central Beds Council. Sally Reynolds Chair Nigel David Vice Chair Ben Jackson Councillor After returning to the village in 2013, following three years studying at University of Leicester, I joined the Parish Council and have enjoyed playing a more active role in the village that I grew up in. From a young age I played for Woburn Lions and also attended Woburn Lower School. As I grew older and looked to become more involved in the village I have been lucky enough to manage in half of Woburn s pubs. I now work at a local PR agency specialising in the hospitality industry and occasionally still lend a hand behind the bar at the Black Horse. - Pavements & cycle ways - Street lighting - Potholes & road defects - Traffic lights - Highways verge maintenance - Flooding - Snow, ice and road gritting - Signs - Overhanging trees and hedges The contact options are: Online: hways Phone: Mail: Central Bedfordshire Council Highways, Woodlands Avenue, Manton Lane, Bedford, MK41 7NU Letter to the Editor Bee Orchids Woburn Parish Council meets every second Tuesday of the month in Woburn Village Hall at 7.30pm. In the middle of June I was delighted to find 2 Bee Orchid plants in flower on the apron of grass at the entrance to Timber Lane from Leighton Street. Returning 2 or 3 days later I was saddened to see the grass had been mown and the orchids had gone. This is the second year that this has happened with 2 plants on the other side of the path also mown when in full flower in Could I please appeal through the newsletter for the grass cutters to check before cutting the grass in 2016 to encourage the survival of these lovely plants in our village. Many thanks Judy Knapman To contact the Parish Clerk woburnpc@gmail.com

4 Page 4 Woburn Village Hall The Village Hall Committee meets on the first Tuesday of every month in the Hall at 7.30pm. We are always looking for new members so if you are interested in helping to run the Hall please come along. Our next meeting is 1 September, then 6 October and our AGM is on 3 November. Bonfire Night, held on the playing fields behind the Village Hall, will be Saturday November 7th. The Woburn Lido organise the fireworks and there will be hot refreshments served in the Hall. Look out for more information nearer the time. We also hold Bingo nights and the next one is planned for early December. The Hall is available for weddings, parties and other events with a bar available if required. And there are special rates for Woburn residents. If you would like to know more please phone Joyce on Open Garden Day & Scarecrow competition Inclement weather didn t dampen spirits at the Woburn Open Gardens Day on 20 June. Rain didn t stop the garden lovers appreciating and enjoying the fresh looking gardens, while numbers were down a little on the previous year it was still a great day. 15 gardens and two allotments were open around the village. Although the Woburn Lower School allotment had been vandalised two weeks earlier the children and teachers had done a great job repairing the damage and it looked wonderful. The scarecrow competition went well and one of our regular scarecrow makers, Trissie Boote, won the adults competition, beating the Woburn China Shop by one vote. Woburn Lower School children produced a fantastic collection of scarecrows, which were arranged under the trees on The Green. First prize went to Silven Verdu while Ashley Mepham came second. The children s prizes were kindly donated by Kate at Matilda Bay. Woburn Heritage Centre thank all the residents who opened their gardens, especially those who served refreshments, the scarecrows makers and the school for their support and participation. Fingers crossed the weather next year will be better.

5 Page 5 Woburn Heritage Centre The Woburn Heritage Centre is housed in Old St Mary s Church, set back from Bedford Street next door to Woburn Lower School. The Centre has a museum of local history and a tourist information point, covering Bedfordshire and surrounding counties. We also specialise in local walks and maps. The museum and tourist information point at Old St Mary s is extending its season this year and will be open every day in October: weekdays 2pm to 4.30pm and weekends 10am to 5pm. Come and visit your village heritage centre before winter sets in! Museums at Night As part of the UK wide Museums at Night the Heritage Centre will be opening up on the evenings of Friday, 30 October and Saturday, 31 October from 6pm to 9pm. Why not pop along and see the Heritage Centre in a new light. Look out for further details. (The photo is how Old St Mary s looked in the early 19 th century). Heritage Centre welcomes Ridgmont School For several years now, Woburn Heritage Centre has enjoyed a close working relationship with local lower schools. Visits to the museum by groups of children, talks and workshops by our volunteers, and use of our resource boxes in classrooms, have made the museum a valuable educational amenity and learning resource for the local community. The Museum s Education Liaison Team was delighted when Ridgmont Lower School decided to hold their end of year day out at the Heritage Centre. Fortunately, Monday July 6 th was set fair, when 36 children descended upon Old St Mary s church, full of enthusiasm and interest. A day of varying activities was planned, combining fun and learning, and finishing with an ice cream fuelled session at the Village Hall playground. Judging by the huge pile of thank you cards, letters and pictures we received (now on display in the Heritage Centre foyer), the Ridgmont children really enjoyed their day with us. They were asked to say what they had enjoyed the most. Several commented on the Village Trail, when they walked around the village, learning about the history and buildings. Playing graveyard detectives in the graveyard proved a great hit. The children were especially fascinated to see the grave of the German soldier. The slide show and artefact handling session within the museum also proved very popular. Inevitably, however, one or two of the number claimed that the shop was their favourite bit, and for others, it was ice creams that made their day! Gill Jackson and Ann Ledger on behalf of WHC Education Liaison Team Something to share? If you have any news you want to share or run a club or have a business and want to promote them please contact newsaroundwoburn@hotmail.com. The print run is 500 with copies distributed to every house in Woburn. The next edition is due out in December. All copy should be submitted by 19 November newsaroundwoburn@hotmail.com

6 Page 6 News from St Mary s Church Open Church Woburn Church is open on the first and third Sundays of each month from after the morning service until 2.30pm and you are more than welcome to pop in and have a look around our historic building. You can also find out about the work and mission of the church and the charities which we support. Some people like to use the time for quiet reflective prayer and there is a prayer box available in our Lady Chapel for anyone who wishes to leave prayer requests either for themselves or for a loved one. The box is checked regularly and all requests are prayed over by our prayer ministry team. There is also the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one. 7 Page 7 Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2015 Recently my wife and I both bought some new shoes. When we were being served the assistant asked if we would like the boxes. I hesitated but my wife immediately said yes just that one please. I looked at her and she said it is the right size with a separate lid. She was thinking ahead as usual. Shoeboxes are of course an essential part of the annual Shoebox Appeal. Over recent years the number of boxes collected, processed and sent from Woburn has been amazing and we hope to do even better this year. Samaritan s Purse is an organisation which allows us the opportunity to show love to children who otherwise would receive no gift at Christmas. How do we do that? By wrapping a shoebox in colourful paper, and collecting small gifts to put in the box to be given to a child. At St Mary s in Woburn the Shoebox Appeal is a huge logistical enterprise involving many, many people who generously give of their time to co-ordinate the collection of EMPTY BOXES / WRAPPING PAPER / SMALL TOYS & GIFTS and the collection of FILLED BOXES from various venues in the area. All the boxes are then checked and prepared for their journey abroad to give happiness to hundreds of children. Each year the collection is marked by a service of thanksgiving at St Mary s, this year on Sunday 15 November, which is attended by a large congregation surrounded by shoe boxes reminding us to give praise and thanks to God for the time, effort and financial support that has made it all possible. If you would like to be part of this amazing experience in any way - providing items to put in boxes (a list of suitable items will be available)/ helping to fill boxes / checking boxes/ etc we at St Mary s will be pleased to hear from you. The whole experience is a great endeavour bringing joy to children, which can always be seen on the DVD produced by Samaritan s Purse, Jesus said Suffer little children to come to me and all those people who support the SHOEBOX APPEAL endeavour to do just that..by giving a filled shoebox to someone they will never meet or never know.. they show their love for children less fortunate than we are. In anticipation we thank you for any help you can give this year s SHOEBOX APPEAL. Something to share?
