1 BLACKO NEWS Jubilee Special Edition July 2012 BLACKO CELEBRATES THE QUEEN S JUBILEE IN GRAND STYLE STREET parties, dining and dancing on the recreation ground, a beacon on Blacko Tower, a firework display, a Jubilee Garden Competition and a new bus shelter; Blacko people and their friends did Her Majesty, the Queen proud! This is a pictorial record of the weekend of 2 4 June, and an opportunity to thank all those who made it such a great success, but where do we start? The Events Committee organised the dance in the marquee on the Saturday and the firework display and picnic on Monday, to watch the lighting of the beacon, as part of the official chain across the country, made possible through the generosity of John Kay, The Parish Council wrote to Her Majesty, congratulating her on her Diamond Jubilee. This is the reply. the tower s owner, and Simon Askew and David Ashworth, who built and erected the beacon. An army of willing volunteers put up the marquees (one was loaned by Peter MacGregor to use as the food tent), and even more turned out on Tuesday morning to take them down. A number of local businesses, who wanted no publicity, contributed financially, and the Events Committee was able to subsidise the ticket price for the dance, as a way of thanking everyone for their support over the years. As a permanent reminder of the occasion, the Events Committee, on behalf of the people of Blacko, donated the new bus shelter across from the Rising Sun. The Parish Council is contributing half the cost of Jubilee medals for all children of primary school age living in the village or attending the school, which is meeting the other half of the cost. Pendle Borough Council made grants available to parish councils towards the Jubilee costs, and the Parish Council secured 500. Blacko s Jubilee events were supported by the

2 The Jubilee Celebration Dance THE weather during the week before had been good, but as the Saturday progressed, the skies darkened, although the deluge stayed off until Sunday. 4 The Street Parties In the week before the Jubilee, the school held its street party in the yard Hollin Fold had planned a grand affair, but Sunday s deluge saw the revellers having fun in the marquees By Tuesday, the rain stopped long enough for Springfield s residents to go al fresco.
