If you experience difficulty printing the application, please send an to: John Konz /johnkonz at msn.com Better Riding thru Added Rides By Bill Selsky, LIBC President Several years ago, one of our stronger riders asked how we were able to ride both Saturday and Sunday. He wasn t asking about the schedule, or household responsibilities acting as a deterrent to more than one ride a week. He was asking about feeling strong enough to ride two days in a row. Aren t you too tired, he wanted to know. He was assured that he could do it, and that every ride category had some riders who would do their best to show up Saturday and Sunday. It was noted that some of us went on multiday tours, sometimes with a week or even two weeks of consecutive days of riding. Not only was he a strong rider, he was told, but actually stronger than he knew, and he would be fine riding both days. And, he was and enjoyed it, though sometimes for sure he, like the rest of us was tired the second day, especially if the day before the ride was very challenging, but he was fine. And then there were the club members who rode to work during the week, not usually lengthy rides, in fact sometimes quite short. These people were among the strongest and steadiest of our riders. The additional rides seemed to work pretty well for them. One year before a tour, several of us met to ride during the week after work. Again, the rides were not long. We tended to finish either just before the sun set or occasionally just as I did. The rides made a difference and the tour, which went through Utah and Arizona, with one day over 100 miles, seemed less tiring overall than previous tours. Now, as several of us reach or have reached the will you still need me will you still feed me years, a couple of rides during the week seem to be doing the same thing as those after work night-time rides. Again, not too lengthy, with rides in the mid-thirties to 40s, and sometimes fast and sometimes not, but the difference is noticeable on weekends, most of the time. So, here s some advice boys and girls: If you can, find some time to ride during the week. You will feel better than if you are just a weekend warrior. Even one or two days additional will make a difference. Most of us are looking for reasons to ride more, and this is a good one. And if that is not feasible, my other suggestion through personal experience is to get a dog, or behave as if you did, and do a lot of walking during the day. See you on the road or walking the dog! 3 A Rides Schedule Note-All rides, unless otherwise indicated, will start at 8:30. A Saturday ride might be replaced with an offisland ride. FRIDAY, AUG. 31 MONDAY, SEPT. 3 LIBC weekend in South Londonderry, Vermont- Great rides, hot tub, good food and beer- unfortunately I won t be there this year, but I will be at the lot. No scheduled rides. Paul s Ride-58 Miles-Paul Block Paul is no longer working on Saturdays so will finally be able to lead. He has stayed strong by doing something (mountain biking?). If Larry is there it will probably be too much for Lynn to bear so don t count on Lynn s presence. Frank s Joint A-B Ride-56 Miles. Frank Seipp At press time it seems like Frank will be leading a joint A-B ride. The destination will be back at the Westbury lot, but he plans on getting there by some north shore route. Magary s Ride -60 miles- Magary Aimee Magary has some new and controversial ideas on men and women. The Beacon closed his ears when he heard them. Magary will expand on them on his route to possibly Nissequoge. Mike will be there. Magary needs him. Phil s Ride? Not sure yet. Larry s Ride-61 Miles- Larry Serras It pains me to say it again, but Larry has turned into a good leader. He might get able assistance and professional help from an esteemed female A rider. The 3 Idiots Ride-an old idea brought back because we happen to have many idiots around. We can expand to 4 or 5. Each idiot will lead for approximately a half hour and then turn it over to another idiot. Actually, quite a success. Lee s Ride miles-shi-wen Lee Lee rides once a week and manages to stay strong. He must be sprinting around his place of work. Nothing at this point, but a few can be drafted. Lynn has not been listed as a leader this month, but she is subject to the Make-Up Rule. Larry was the first to have this rule imposed on him and Lynn might be the second. Be ready Lynn. Phil B Rides Schedule Reminder, all rides from the lot will start at 8.30 for one more month, until Oct. Remote starts may have different start times as the ride leader see fit. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 Daniel s ride will be 60 miles with a lunch stop in Fort Solonga SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 ride plans MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 Maybe some members will join for a holiday celebration ride Steve T. will be leading a 62- mile ride to a destination to be announced. Open-Roll Your Own. Now that Magary has led an A ride, he will share his learnings with us on a 65-mile trip to Nissequogue Hamid will lead in his usual steady and strong style, the route and destination will be posted prior to departure Frank will take us on route including some favorite north shore hills in preparation of the Bear Mtn ride the next week. ride plans. With a remote start, Jayne will lead us to Perkins observatory and a tour of Bear Mtn. Please check the Yahoo messenger for details and to sign up for the ride. ride plans SEPTEMBER 2018 GOLD COASTING PAGE 3
