1 April 2009 The Beginning of the 2009 Cycling Season Another great year of cycling with AMC is ahead of us. The weekday rides will be starting in April along with the weekend rides. I would like to ask everyone to lead at least one ride this year. For those who have never led a ride or need a refresher on what to do, the Ride Leader training rides are planned for April 18 th and 19 th. If you can t make one of these, you can also offer to co-lead with one of our current ride leaders. A few items of interest, Wayne Tursi has replaced Agatha Pohorylo as co-chair and joins Rick Merritt and the rest of the AMC cycling committee. Wayne has ridden and led many AMC rides. We also finally have a cycling jersey. The first order is being placed as this is being published, but a second order will most likely be placed in early to mid summer. If you are interested in purchasing a jersey send an to agathalp@sbcglobal.net. As we start the new cycling season, I would like to remind everyone the importance of following the rules of the road and good group riding etiquette. Both of these are outlined below: Some CT Laws (info thanks to Jennine Ferrell) b(a) failure to ride as near to right side of road as practicable $ b(b) riding more than two abreast $ b(b) riding two abreast impeding movement to traffic failure to ride within single lane on a lane roadway. $ b(e) failure to keep at least one hand on handlebar of bicycle when bicycle is in motion. $75.00 Group Riding Etiquette Communicate Hand signals and verbal signals Right turn, left turn Slowing, stopping Pointing at obstacles and calling them out (you need to point before going by the obstacle or you are not giving the rider behind you enough warning) Car back Move over for obstacles ahead (example, Walker up ) Let other riders know when you are passing them. Avoid passing on the right. Don t use aerobars when in a group. You need to have good control of your bike and have your brakes within close reach. Submitted by Agatha Pohrylo
