Although a certan sense of planned balance s suggested by the overall appearance,.of the north (front) elevaton, the ndvdual detals are dverse, and the rear sectons of the house *re abandoned to the twsts and angles characterstc of pcturesque nrchltecture. A second Arlngton rtplaced the frst one n 893. Ths hotel was a massve fve-storey, dark-red brck structure, desgned n the Spansh Renassance style. Encompassng more than fve hundred rooms, the new Arlngton establshed a xeputaton as one of the best hotels n the state. n addton to hs personal control of the Arlngton Hotel, Samuel Sttt, through hs poston as presdent of the Arlngton Hotel Company, managed the Hotel Eastman, eomonly known as the "Monarch of the Glen." Flotel Eastman, at the tme of ts 890 constructon, was perhaps the largest hotel n the Unted States (52P rooms). Sam~el Sttt before hs death n 93 dd more than possbly any other hotel owner-manager to provde accommodatons sutable for a frst-class resort. Two other well-known Hot Sprngs ctzens spent perods of varyng lengths n the Sttt House. Wllam Ganes lved n the house for the last sx years of hs lfe ( ). He had come to Hot Sprngs n 85, whereupon he marred Mss Mara Beldng. After the marrage, lyllam.- Ganes pressed the land clam of Mss Beldng's deceased father, Ludvcus, who, as a pjoneer settler n 828, had lad clam to much of the land upon whch Hot Sprngs was bult. The clam was dsputed by at least three
