INTRODUCTION MT--RJ fber optc connector kts (reference part number ) are avalable for multmode and snglemode applcatons. The kts, shown n Fgure 1, are desgned to be appled to 2.8--mm DUALAN cable and 1.8--mm mn zpcord cable. Refer to Fgure 1. Read ths materal thoroughly before startng assembly. All numercal values n ths nstructon sheet are n metrc unts [wth U.S. customary unts n brackets]. Dmensons are n mllmeters [and nches]. Fgures are not drawn to scale. Reasons for ressue of ths nstructon sheet are provded n Secton 6, REVISION SUMMARY. 2. DESCRIPTION (See Fgure 1) Each connector kt conssts of a connector housng, ferrule, pn keeper, compresson sprng, sprng push, crmp eyelet, stran relef, and dust cover. The connector kts are avalable wth or wthout gude pns. 3. 5 4.2. Termnatng Fbers 1. Prepare the epoxy accordng to the package nstructons, and fll the applcator from the epoxy applcator kt. Insert and bottom the epoxy applcator nto the openng of the ferrule assembly. Slowly begn njectng epoxy nto the ferrule. As the wndow flls, slowly wthdraw the applcator whle contnung to dspense epoxy. See Fgure Wth the fbers splayed approxmately 0.75 [.0295] apart, nsert them nto the ferrule. Do not tlt or force the fbers nto the ferrule. Be sure to dentfy the nput and output fbers. 3. In order to coat the fbers wth epoxy, use a pstonng moton, gently push the ferrule back and forth at least 10 tmes. See Fgure 19. Openng Epoxy Applcator Wndow Ferrule Assembly Fgure 18 Fbers Whle coatng fbers, do not nsert the buffer nto the ferrule. Gently Push Ferrule Back and Forth At Least 10 Tmes Fgure Carefully place the buffered fbers nto the ferrule openng. The buffer must not be vsble through the ferrule wndow. See Fgure 20. Buffered Fbers If the connector s termnated wth m fber optc cable, the buffered fber must be nserted dagonally nto the ferrule openng. 5. Rotate the cure fxture lever arm to the LOAD poston. See Fgure 21. Fgure To secure the termnated assembly n the cure fxture: a. Insert the ferrule nto ts locatng pocket. b. Place the sprng and sprng push nto ther respectve cavtes. c. Press the cable jacket nto ts retanng groove. Lever Arm n LOAD Poston Fgure 21 Cure Fxture 5 of 10
6 To ensure that the assembly s the proper length, verfy that both fbers are farly straght and the cable jacket has bottomed on the front sprng push cavty wall. See Fgure 22, Detal A. Detal A Cable Bottomed Here d. Rotate the lever arm to the LOCK poston. See Fgure 22, Detal B. If maskng tape was used to hold the sprng push n poston, remove t now. However, to ease later assembly, the aramd strands should stll be folded under the sprng push knurl. Cable Sprng Push Sprng Ferrule Assembly Detal B 7. Apply a small bead of epoxy (approxmately m n dameter) to the base of each protrudng fber. If needed, dspense addtonal epoxy nto the ferrule wndow. The fbers must be covered; however, the epoxy must not protrude above the ferrule exteror surface. See Fgure Hang the assembly down n the heat cure oven, and cure the epoxy for 15 mnutes at 115 C [239 F]. 9. After curng, use the cable to gently lft the assembly out of the heat cure oven. Fgure 22 Lever Arm n LOCK Poston Small Bead of Epoxy Appled to Base of Each Protrudng Fber Upon removal from the heat cure oven, the assembly wll be HOT. Allow suffcent tme for the assembly to cool. 10. Rotate the cure fxture lever arm to the EJECT poston and carefully remove the assembly. See Fgure 24. Lever Arm n EJECT Poston Fgure 23 Fgure 24 6 of 10
7 11. Place the scrbe tool drectly above the epoxy and lghtly draw the beveled edge across each fber. See Fgure 25. After scorng the fber, pull t straght away from the connector to complete the cleavng operaton. Safely dspose of excess fber. Excess Fber Epoxy Bead Pull After Cleave Scrbe Tool Tp Scrbe Tool Do not saw or cut off fber wth the scrbe tool. Ths could fracture the fber, makng the connector unusable. Also, do not allow the scrbe tool to contact the epoxy. Ths may damage the sapphre tp. Ferrule Assembly Fgure Polshng Due to the nconsstences of hand polshng multple fbers, t s recommended that a polshng machne be used. Refer to the polshng machne manufacturer for nstructons. After polshng, usng the mcroscope kt or magnfer, refer to Fgure 26, and check the end face for the followng: NEVER nspect or look nto the end of termnated or untermnated fbers. Laser radaton s nvsble but can damage eye tssue. small chps n the outer rng are permssble (large chps or chps n the center of the fber mean that the polsh s unacceptable; therefore, re--polshng or re--termnaton s necessary) deep scratches or large pts ndcate that the ferrule must be re--polshed epoxy resdue left on the end face s unacceptable and the ferrule should be re--polshed Acceptable Fber Unacceptable Inspecton Ferrule End Face Small Perpheral Chps Permssble Deep Scratches Large Pts or Internal Chps Fgure 26 7 of 10
