The three-storey mans10n remains much the same as when first erected; but kitchens have been modified six bathrooms added and an elevator 1nstalled. The lower exter10r portion of the house is rubble-squared granite whereas the upper storeys are half-t1dbered. The twenty-two room mans10n also has four chimneys and each is 11nked and pierced. The horne has numerous overhang1ng gables and the main roof above the front entrance 1S of the bellcast gable type. All the roofs are shingled. Descr1bed 1n a clockwise fash10n and beginning w1th the northwest corner the features of the house are as follows: First there 1S an entrance to a carriage porch. Next there 1S a double-door main entrance and a porch - above wh1ch 1S a large semi-circular arch made of stone. D1rectly above th1s arch are a set of bay w1ndows. Most of the windows on the front as well as throughout the build1ng are of the casement type; but there are exceptions. On the front are lccated two second-storey port hole w1ndows. Many of the w1ndows on the front and throughout the horne are also leaded. Completing the front face of the bu11d1ng are a shed dormer on the roof and a lesser gable on the northeast end. The east end of the house has a large ground-floor porch...a secondstorey sleeping balcony and a double-gabled roof. t The south side has ~oth a smaller and a larger gable pl9b two ch1mneys.! m m z - ;0 c:: n - o z The west side has two gables; the f1rst one 1S large but the second 1S a small dormer-balcony with pediment. Beneath is the;carriage porch. The 1nter10r has an impos1ng hall wh1ch stands two storeys high and 1ncludes a mezzanine. ncluded on the second-storey portion of the ) hall 1S a wood-carved balcony wh1ch overlooks from a second-floor master suite. Originally the walls were hung with blue tapestry. Elaborate sta1rways were also built throughout the house and lion heads were carved dn the marble fireplace. The house was and still 1S opulent; and i~terestingly even the windows in the kitchen pantry are leaded. Although electr1c1ty was ava11able when the'mansion was constructed light~ were added later. r The arch1tect had the responsib111ty of furn1sh1ng the horne and even traveled East to find select1ons. Although a number of purchases were made the balance of the furniture was spec1ally made to fit the size of the ro::'rns and to match the golden oak woodwofk. Newspapers "

James N. Glover long noted as the "founding father" of Spokane arr1ved 1n the area in 1873 and purchased 160 acres from a pa1r of horse thieves who had come to th1s lonely region to escape the law. Located adjacent to the falls of the Spokane River Glover bu11t a store and began trad1ng W1th the ndians for furs. TO help get a town going Glover offered forty acres of free land the owner of a sawm111 located near present-day Rathdrum daho. owner accepted and moved h1s operat10n to Spokane Falls. Desp1te generos1ty and siffi11aracts - or perhaps because of them - Glover to The this prospered; and so did Spokane. n t1me Glover's 1nterests 1ncluded not only the development of the Couer d'alene m1nes 1n Northern daho but financ1ng as well. By the late 1880's Glover was a mil110naire and pres1dent of a bank. t was at this t1me (1888) that Glover built his mansion wh1ch was commensurate w1th his new status. The panic of 189~ however drove Glover nearly to bankruptcy; and he eventually lost ppssession of the mansion. The owners S1nce that t1me have been: Frankj H. Graves a lawyer ( ); Charles Sweeney a ffi1neowner (1904-~908); Patr1ck Welch a contractor (1~ );and the Spokane Unitarian Church (1943- present). At the t1me of construct10n the house was located outs1de of town at the end of a diri road that wound through pine trees to the base of the basalt cliffd that r1nged the commun1ty. nd1ans still occasionally roamed this area; and Mrs. Glover disl1ked being left ~lone in the house. Stone fo~ the structure came from a quarry near the little Spokane RJ. ver t.{nmales to the north. Although 1he house had an unusually 1mpress1ve " baron1al hall the features most noted at the t1me of construct10n were the three bathrooms - placed ins1ae! Glover's mansion ~as des1gned by K1rt1and Kelsey Cutter Spokane's famous Architect. Th1S fact is all the more sign1ficaot when 1t is noted that th1s was probably Cutter's f1rst major architectural effort. After the construction of Glover's home Cutter-designJd mans10ns qu1ckly became popular among Spokane's well-to-do - particularly the ffi1n1ngmagnates Obviously it was a big undertaking' to build such pretent10us homes in th1s small frontier C1ty that had so few crafts f... _-

Glover lous e Jest 321 Eighth Avenue Spokane ~A Current Ow ne r : Uni tari all Chu rch of Spokane W. 321 s t.h Avenue Spo~ane A Proposed Cilange: Tilat the stateolcnt of slgnificance be expanded to include tile entire grounds of tile Glover House property. Justif1cat10n: The James tl Glover House was one of the first bu i ldlnq s i n Sp o ka ne to be norai ua t ed to the National Register in ly70. And rightfully so for it was the lome which bore test1rnony to the phenomenal success of the "rather of Spokane" James il. Glover. At the time however the text of the nominat10n om1tted treatment of the entire property parcel on Wh1Ch tile louse sits 1ncluding once beautifully landscaped and terraced grounds drives curbed ith stones curvi ng concrete steps and an impressive cut granite garden wall wllich still runs the length of the or1ginal property. The remnants of this landscaping bear considerable historical significance as an integral part of James Glover's architectural legacy to tile City of Spo~ane. Co n t eup o r ary accounts state t ha t in 1888 James Glover bought from the Nortllern Pacific Railroad a large tract of 1 and wh i ch extended from Hashi ngton Street to ~ccl ell an Street and bac~ to tile rinrock (the cliff of Spokane's South H111). A 1977 interview witll a descendant of the Patrick Welch ho own ed the property from 1906 to 1943 reveal ed that during tile Welch's tenure the grounds were elaborate e no uq h to requ i re the services of two full time gardeners. There were tenn1s courts a green house an orchard and vast lawns. At least four wells were located on the property. Photographic cv1uencp indicates that the formal landscaping and tile construct10n of the beautiful gran1te garden v a ll wn i ch runs along Eighth /lvenue were a cconplished soon after Kirtland K. Clltter COMpleted the res1dence. A very early pllotograph shows the cut edge

While this latter photograph does not include the area lhere the stone wall is located the finished appearance of the portion of the grounds which does appear would 1ndicate that the wall had already been built. n any case the stone wall the elaborate beds and the manicured 1 awns we rc certai nly v el l establ ished by 1908 when Patrick Welch took possession of the mansion. A ser1es of photographs taken by Spokane's famous Charles A. L1bby in 19Q8 (three of lhich are enclosed) reveal the grandeur of the estate at that time. The Glever louse grounds have diminished to the one acre now ownea by the Unitarian Church of Spokane and thcy have changed considerably. The Church added a new chapel building d oun the slope to the northeast of the house and the lush and sllapely flower beds on the east portion of the grounds have been lost to necessary walks and stairways and to another property owner. But the stone wall vh i ch has a lvay s articulated the property and defined its manor-like setting rema1ns an important part of Spokane's patriwony.
