3 3 Presidents Report Hi Ulysseseans, We have had a very busy 2 months since my last report & I ll start with the sad news of the passing of Garry Johnson. Garry s fight with cancer started 2 years ago but with his love of riding his bike he was still riding with us up to a few weeks ago & all though he was in a bit of pain & discomfort he was still smiling & having a joke. I would like to thank all of the 20 members that attended Garry s funeral. It is wonderful to see that Ulysses has brought us all together & the friendships that have been formed with in our branch & I m so glad to have meet you all! We also had a BBQ at Mitre 10 to raise money for UCARF. Thanks to everybody that came & helped out. We raised approx. $220. We have had some very enjoyable rides in the past 2 months (too many to list, see web site for details) and a group of 8 bike 2 pillions, 1 RV & a dog travelled to Broken Hill with local historian Lois Jones guiding the group through every part & back streets of Broken Hill. The full story is still being documented & will be in a future newsletter. Our Xmas lunch is at Kevin & Brenda s place on the 15th 11.30am. The cost is $10pp, we need to know numbers ASAP. Call me on Swansea camp over on 8th, 9th & 10th of December, with secret Santa present up to $15. On 13th January 2019 we will be having our Family Day BBQ Ride. This is a day we are wanting you to bring family members on the back of your bike, or if they have a bike to come ride with us, or come by car for the BBQ lunch at Parsley Bay, Brooklyn. The more the merrier! Oh Oh Oh and a bottle of Rum! I mean Merry Xmas Q #61963 Secretary Report May I congratulate Gavin on an outstanding ride on Sunday Last.Great work. Also the ride to Katoomba was a beauty as well especially as Gav was so ill. Congratulations again to Steve and Mary Whitehead, Gavin Photographer and assistant (no name) WHO MADE THE DAY FOR A LOVELY 86 year old Lady who won a ride on a Harley by buying a raffle ticket for Woy Woy Rotary. Congratulations to all our Lady Riders who attended and returned safely from the Dubbo it looked like a Fantastic ride for all concerned. Your Hard Working Committee is coming up with 2 weekend rides away in March 2019 one of these is to A Rifle range with older style bore rifles (that do not have the KICK of 12 gauge shotgun so Alan advised). The other is on Saturday the 16 th and 17 of March, 2019, leaving at 8.00am from Maccas. We have brought back the Foster Ride from years gone by, same Motel, same pool. Same Bowling Club for Dinner, same hot breakfast and 4 rooms booked already, please let me know if you wish to come along. Lyn and I will be taking the trailer for our next ride/ flight at Mangrove Mountain on the any different foods required please contact either of us so that we are prepared.. Your Committee is also discussing welfare issues to contribute any left over money that we may have at the end of the year (these monies are dispersed so that we do not get hit with a Tax Bill) and helps local constabularies. Wishing all Members the Best of Health and riding Weather Lois
4 4 Some riders would have been hoping for a repeat of the epic 2015 Whiteout, but this time Mother Nature only teased us with some early drizzle. We rolled out from Woy Woy with dry road and sunny sky, making a beeline for Berowra. We crossed Berowra Creek via the ferry and climbed through Arcadia, dodging falling tree branches while a truck carrying a shipping container carved its way up the road ahead of us. We carried on via Cattai Ridge Road and Windsor to our morning tea pit stop at Richmond. Castlereagh Road and Springwood Road brought us to the hairpins at Hawkesbury Heights. Gazing out across the Cumberland Plain between 180 degree turns was definitely a highlight! A smooth run on the Great Western Highway. We turned off at Leura and followed the Blue Mountains Drive around the clifftops to The Three Sisters. We squeezed in among the crowds of sightseers to snap a few pics. Next stop at the cable car for lunch. We all agreed the queue for the cable car ride was too long so we gave that a miss. Happy with our trip, we headed for home. Some rolled back down the hill into the Big Smoke, others took the scenic route through Mount Victoria, Bell and Bilpin. Smiling riders all round! Gav Lill #65483
5 5 Fort Scratchley and St Albans rides from Waterfall Cafe were postponed due to rain. I was starting to think a Sunday ride departure from Waterfall Cafe would guarantee water falling from the sky. Third time lucky. A couple of welcome early showers cleared away and eighteen bikes rumbled cheerfully northwards. Or was it the rumbling of stomachs anticipating a hearty morning tea pit stop? We followed our noses to Abermain via Hue Hue Road, Cooranbong, Brunkerville and Kearsley. The home made pies did not disappoint! Rolling on through Rutherford, Aberglasslyn and Melville Ford brought us to Maitland Vale Road and a delightful cruise to Greta for lunch. The home run via Lovedale Road and Cessnock (detour via Ellalong to avoid Postie Bike Grand Prix road closures), with traditional coffee at Freemans, capped off a fun day out. 8 8 7 Signs You Need To Replace Your Motorcycle Helmet POSTED ON MAY 5, 2018 BY MOTOHELMET If you ride your motorcycle or ATV often then your helmet gets a lot of use. At some point you will have to replace it but the question is when? How long does a motorcycle helmet last? The general rule of thumb is to consider replacing your helmet every 3-5 years barring that the helmet has not experienced any accidents or significant impact. Do You Need To Replace Your Helmet If You Drop It? I m sure you have heard by now that if you drop your helmet you need to replace. Let me clarify any misunderstandings or concerns. Unless you drop it off the Eiffel tower then you don t have to replace your helmet. Many retailers may insinuate this scare tactic just to get more sales but it is simply not true. If you drop your motorcycle helmet, you do not need to replace it. Of course, you should check your helmet for any possible damage if you do drop it but chances are you won t need to replace it. You would have to drop your helmet from a significant height in order to damage it to the point that you need a new one. Helmet Material What is a motorcycle helmet made of? The majority of motorcycle helmets and dirt bike helmets consist of an outer shell made from some type of durable plastic, fiberglass, or carbon. These compounds are some of the most robust materials found on this planet. They will last for years to come. They are extremely durable and have proof of the utmost resiliency. A simple drop of your helmet onto the ground should not cause it to become damaged if it is made from one of these compounds. The interior helmet typically consists of dense foam to help absorb impact. If you dropped your helmet with something heavy inside of it, you may need to check the foam for deformation. The foam does a great job of absorbing and dispersing impact so dropping your helmet should not drastically impact the integrity of your helmet to the point that you need a new one. You will also find some type of moisture-wicking lining inside your helmet as well. This lining will help absorb sweat and other moisture to preserve the integrity of the helmet. Unless you are filling your helmet with water and then letting it free fall from your roof, you do not have to worry about getting a new helmet if you accidentally drop it. Below I have listed 7 signs to look for that will help determine if you need a new helmet. As a beginner rider, these tips helped me to know if I needed to replace mine. #1 Helmet Age How old is your helmet? Like I mentioned at the beginning of this article, if you have worn your helmet for over 5 years, then it might be time to replace it. But why should you replace your helmet every 5 years? After 5 years of consistent wear and tear, your helmet will have more than likely weakened. I know it may look like it is in perfect condition but you should consider its age and the impact it has on the components of the helmet. If you wear your helmet consistently, it becomes exposed to weather, dirt, UV rays, and other elements that you may not think about having an effect on the integrity of your helmet. These elements ultimately weaken the resins and glues that hold it together. Although there is no definitive research on this, the 5 year age expiration date is enforced by most manufacturers. There are other factors that can play into the lifespan of your helmet. So even though 5 years is the recommended age limit for a replacement, it could be a few years less or more. The average Shoei helmet lifespan is around 5 years. You can use that as a reference point since they are one of the most reputable brands in the industry. Also, Snell safety standards enforce a 5-year policy. Therefore manufacturers make sure to abide by this to prevent potential lawsuits. To Be Continued in December Issue
