President s Report Page 3 Hi all members & guests, The last month has been very quiet for some members & extremely busy for other members! From what I have heard, the members that traveled to Tasmania for the AGM (5000km plus) had a wonderful me! Great weather, great roads with wonderful group of people! I'm looking forward to hearing the stories & seeing more photos at this months social mee ng! I think there were many wooden spoon award moments & choosing the winner will be difficult! Those members that stayed home, we had small, quiet & in mate social mee ng & rides! We s ll had 8 to 10 bikes which was very enjoyable rides & lunches at Kurri Kurri & Bellbird Hotel. On the last ride to Bellbird, Chris ne rode her bike with the group for the first me & did very well. On April 3rd we will be have a ride lead by Steve Whitehead. This ride will finish at Max's place where he will be cooking a spit roast for lunch. Max has told me he won't be riding because he has to watch the spit go round & round, while constantly checking the temperature of to champagne (with his lips), to ensure all is perfect for our arrival! Thanks Max! This weekend we will be riding to the Pines Cafe on Bells Line of Road. We have done this ride before & it is a very nice ride, hope to see you all then! We have to start thinking about booking accommoda on for the 2017 Ulysses AGM at Wauchope/Port Macquarie 22nd to 28th May. I have made some inquiries & have costs on a range of accommoda on for camping, caravan, cabin & motel in Port Macquarie. NOTE: The 2019 Ulysses AGM will be held on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Let s have Fun & Let's Ride! Q #61963 A really big thanks to Mike and the team at Peninsular Office Supplies for printing our Branch Newsletter. NEW SPONSOR WANTED
Secretary s Report September 2015 Hello Members and guests Page 4 Another great trip to the AGM and believe me there was more than a few laughs along the way. A detailed report has been provided by Judy so I will not go over the detail. Safe to say there could have been any number of wooden spoons awarded during the trip. Well the AGM, the purpose of the trip, was as "dry as toast" There were a number of awards presented and these will be highlighted in the minutes as they are released. Just some of the high lights. - Approx were registered - Vendors were not doing very well due to the increased cost of getting there wears to Tasmania - Mornington Peninsula will be the site of the 2019 AGM with a number of Victorian branches involved - There were a number of accidents involving Ulysses members. The status will be reported via the National Web Site - Court case regarding the printing of the Riding On magazine has not been fully resolved with further negotiations ongoing The extended Natcom meeting, which I also attended, covered of everything as the AGM with the exception of the Elections. Thanks again to everyone who had a hand in organising the trip. I think most of it went of without a hitch but I do know for a fact there is far less fudge and nougat in Tasmania now than what there was when we arrived. 5 Page 5 Pick-a-Pub Ride 21st February bikes and 10 people departed Woy Woy at 9:00am(ish) and headed north via Kangy Angy, Hue Hue Road and Wyee Road. Turning east at Morisset, we followed Wangi Road to our morning tea stop at Toronto Maccas. Occasional drizzle was very welcome on this warm and sunny day. Back on the bikes we headed west to Freemans Waterhole, then north via Mulbring to the cool interior of Kurri Kurri bowling club for lunch. Heading back home via a stop at Freemans for cool drinks, ominous black clouds did not dampen any spirits. Another great day with happy riders and smooth roads. Ride Leader Steve W
Page 6 Bellbird via Wollombi Ride 6th March 2016 Bellbird Pub ride another near perfect day (a little warm at times). Nine bikes eleven riders set out from Woy Woy Mackers, up Woy Woy rd to Mount White cafe (old road warriors ) for morning tea. After coffee we headed back on old road out through Peats Ridge and onto Wollombi, short stop then onto Bellbird Pub. Food was reasonably priced and quite good, the Chef even came out to make sure we were happy. After we all had a feed and a few drinks we headed off via Ellalong down Sandy Hollow rd to Brunkerville, Coorangbong, Ruttleys rd then The Lakes Beach cafe for drinks then home. Great to see Christine ride along with us on her bike, went the full distance too, seemed very happy with herself well done. All in All a terrific day. Ride Leader Kevin Murray
TASMANIA RIDE REPORT FEB Page AM on Friday 19/2/16 saw 6 bikes leave from Kariong to Gundagai via Goulburn. Fine weather, quite warm. Overnight stay at Gundagai. 5.30am Saturday 20/2/16 saw the remaining 6 bikes and a car leave Kariong straight through to Albury. A hot, long ride and happy to arrive. Sunday 21/2/16 altogether we rode to Melbourne and enjoyed the a ernoon at the pub, wai ng to board the Spirit of Tasmania. We waited in line for some hours slowly wai ng to board the Spirit and enjoyed a jovial evening aboard the ship. We were then packed into cabins, o en 4 of us to a small room with bunks. A lot of laughs and not much sleep. A good crossing but some swell and rocking. Arriving early at Devonport and Up early to ride off the ship, which was much quicker than boarding. Garry and Sue had a bike sensor problem, so they soon found the Harley Davidson shop. Then a short ride to Launceston Airport in cloudy weather to pick up the 6 lady pillions. A bit of difficulty even leaving the airport! A group ride to beau ful Bicheno which was towards the east coast of Tasmania. We spent 2 relaxing days and nights exploring Bicheno and some enjoying some amazing roads to ride out to - Campbell Town and down the coast to Wineglass Bay for picnics and walks. Wednesday 24/2/16 saw us all heading off south down the east coast to beau ful Richmond. A beau ful historic town where we explored the old fashioned shops, bakeries and lolly shop. Photo opportuni es galore. We con n- ued south down to the very southernmost point of the Tasman Peninsula to beau ful Nubeena in an Eco-village. A few riders con nued through to visit historical Port Arthur and enjoyed an informa ve convict tour. At Nubeena it was Bo led water only, lovely motel rooms and an on-site mul -na onal restaurant where we all thoroughly enjoyed a diverse dinner including goats curry, wallaby, schnitzel stacks, all washed down with unique Tasmanian wines and beers. A memorable night all with a short walk to our rooms. The following morning Thursday 25/2/16 we rose to a cool and misty morning and Jeff's bike wouldn't start! A new ba ery in order, so off he went searching for one. As we headed north back up towards Richmond, Kate was following Lois and Lois' "Oggy nog" came off, bouncing long and hard along the road towards Kate. We saw Kate swerve to her right to avoid it, narrowly missing an oncoming car and over double unbroken lines! It was a terrifying moment for Kate and those watching! We pulled over soon a er for Kate to se le her nerves - Sue never did find the lost Oggy nog! A phone call from Mon "where is everybody"! We re-grouped for a de-brief. Kate did amazingly well and everyone was OK. We con nued west and arrived in beau ful Hobart. A lovely town where we stayed 2 nights and relaxed with a few taking rides down through Huonville along the coastline, others walking around Hobart and Cons tu on Dock, a horse and carriage ride for some to enjoy an evening exploring Hobart, a walk through Ba ery Point and the first subdivision of Hobart an area called "Arthur Circus". 8 Tasmanian Odyssey Con nued Page 8 ". A visit to the MONA Museum (Museum of Natural Art) which was an amazingly different and modern museum, a guided tour of old Hobart Gaol, a ride on the red bus through Hobart. Many and varied things enjoyed by many. Our accommoda on was two bedroom self-catered rooms right in the heart of Hobart. The nearby "Irish Murphy's pub" was a regular mee ng place in the heart of Salamanca. Sat 27//2/16 saw us all up very early, star ng with a visit to the famous Salamanca Markets right at our door. We then rode North West on another sunny and cool day along some gentle 80kmh roads. We then visited an out of the way place called "The Wall" near the Derwent River Bridge. The Wall is a wooden hand sculptured wall of everything Australian and is metres long and high. An amazing display of hand carved woodwork. Con nued on through some amazing forest country, so splendid in environment and climate through the Cradle Mountain Na onal Park. We then hit some incredible ght bends (101 of them to be exact) heading into Queenstown. Not our favourite road. Cli ops, ght bends and the road was in terrible condi on, making it the least enjoyable ride of the trip! Some stopped in Queenstown to enjoy the historical Queenstown Railway where we boarded an old refurbished fully working train. One bike decided to go on ahead to our next overnight stop, Strahan. But this rider made a wrong turn and he and his pillion travelled 30km into dense forest on a fine gravel road. And then 30km back out and finally arrived, a er most of us, at Strahan! Strahan for the night in a cold and cloudy town but in some lovely warm cabins. Sunday 28/2/16 saw us all up early to board the Franklin Gordon River cruise exploring the river, salmon farms, convict Sarah Island and the sawmill. The going was rough and Lois took a tumble and badly injured her knee. She was met by the ambulance and taken to Burnie hospital, which is directly north at the top of Tasmania, about 250km away! "Ac on sta ons". Car re-packed ready for Lois to travel in the back, her gear off her bike and ready for Judy to ride. Monday 29/2/16 and the hospital did all the scans and Lois had ligament/tendon damage. Some drugs later and Lois hobbled out of Burnie hospital to be picked up by Sue in the car and those of us on bikes. We arrived around lunch me and Lois couldn't wait to get in the car - she had thrown away her crutches and leg brace and we carried on north, away from the clouds and rain. We visited the chocolate and fudge factory, the cheese factory and Strawberry Farm. Samples and purchases made at every stop. It was a very cold ride to Burnie through some cool and amazing bends. Some riders took another way and met us in Stanley. Amazing how we can do our own thing and join in with others and explore so much of Tasmania. We then rode west through some cold and drizzle but spectacular scenery along the northern coast and camped in Stanley for the night. The pub for tea and an early night with wind and rain. The following morning Tuesday 1/3/16 saw us up to more wind and light rain. We talked about how the wind howled all night through the hostel Windows and doors and one member commented "I thought I was in Mawson's Hut!" & coin opp Laundrette Phone: Shop 1 Oscar Street 10 % DISCOUNT FOR ULYSSES MEMBERS 10 % DISCOUNT FOR ULYSSES MEMBERS Ricki & Elizabeth Jones info@obdc.com
Page 9 We then con nued into Launceston to our apartments in Alanvale and a few of us went to the Ulysses AGM BBQ dinner in the Aurora Stadium in Launceston. It was a 'cowboy" theme and some dressed appropriately. It was held in two large tents with 2 bars in the middle and the dinner was a BBQ and cold meat and salads, followed by live music and dancing. Wednesday 2/3/16 saw a dozen of us head out early to Hollybanks Treetop Adventure - a high flying zip line adventure through the Tasmanian forest! There was lengthy instruc ons and simulated zip line flying before we walked through the forest and went from line to line up to 80 metres over the forest floor, a truly exhilara ng experience. We finished up early a ernoon, pre y red and some had a quiet a ernoon and others visited wineries. Some went into the AGM itself and the trader Draggin Jeans, Earplug Moulds, Rocky Creek Design, HD shop, lambswool seat covers, stands for Port Macquarie and SA upcoming AGM's, Ulysses apparel, pain relief and general jewellery and trinkets and a vintage car display. Food stalls were the Lions club doing breakfast, lunch and dinner, pancakes and crepes van, and a fish and chips and take away food and drink. Motorbike test rides were HD, BMW, Suzuki, Victory, Indian and Spider Can Am's and trailers. We all felt slightly disappointed at the lack of traders and motorbike brands. Thursday 3/3/16 saw a few of us head off early and enjoy a sunny days country ride to the Mole Creek caves at Marapooka about an hour away and toured the glow worm caves, lunched in Deloraine, then con nued north through some amazing countryside to the famous Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre where 2 miners were trapped for 14 days in Then a short drive to the northern coast to see Seahorse and platypus Aquariums, a short call into a nearby Swiss town called Grinwalde and a long ride home. Le overs for tea and an early night. Others went to the AGM site itself, the Motor MUseum or the nearby Cataract Gorge. Friday 4/3/16 saw us rise to another sunny day in Launceston! We all did different things today, ranging from visi ng the AGM, visi ng the Cataract Gorge for a chairli ride, amazing waterways and rock forma ons, visi ng the biggest and best HD store in Australia where some of us test rode new Harley's and others needed a new tyre due to a nail embedded in it, some went to pubs and to see waterfalls at Lilydale. A dinner at the Iron Bar Grill at the HD store ended the evening. We are all pre y red by the evening so not too much partying going on! Saturday 5/3/16 we headed into Launceston for the Grand Parade on another sunny Tassie day! Some waited at McDonalds with a coffee for the parade to start and what a parade it was! At least 1000 bikes in the parade, with flags, costumes, dogs, feathers, and lots of laughs and waves. A great parade for the City of Launceston. Most then took a leisurely ride north towards Devonport, stopping in Sheffield and Penguin for a cool rest under a tree before ge ng ready to board the Spirit of Tasmania. Garry and Judy remained for the AGM mee ng and then headed to Devonport. It was hot and sunny wai ng to board but we soon se led in, sat and had drinks whilst the Spirit pulled away from the dock and we were pre y red and had an early night, rocked to sleep whilst crossing the Bass Strait.
Tasmanian Odyssey Con nued Page 10 Sunday 6/3/16 Up early to ride off the boat at 6am (yawn) and then rode from Port Melbourne to the nearest McDonalds for breakfast and then on to Phillip Island. A beau ful ride along the coastline arriving quite early, so relaxed around Cowes for lunch and the shops and then headed east to our motel where there was a pool for a swim for some, and tourist a rac ons for others. This is our last night as a group together, before we head our different ways home. It has been 2 weeks of constantly being on our bikes, riding beau ful roads, seeing the wonderful state of Tasmania and all it has to offer - scenery, wildlife, wilderness, amazing food, wine and hospitality. Monday 7/3/16 was the day we all went different ways, con nuing their own holiday. The morning was cloudy with rain and Shane Rhonda and Lois packed up and headed off early to head straight home. They had a rainy ride to Cooma for the night. Some then rode along the southern coastline of Victoria to Bairnsdale and others further on to lovely Lakes Entrance for the night. It was a long hot ride for us along some pre y boring roads. Some had luxury accommoda on and others bunked down in a local motel. Tuesday 8/3/16 was another sunny day for a ride, but heading off from Lakes Entrance, via Cann River, a er an early day in case it got too hot. We arrived looking forward to arriving in Eden for a swim at the beach. Met up with Phil who was caravanning in Eden. Half the group arrived home safely. The remainder rode up the coast to various places, calling into family and friends and places of interest. Launceston is now raining so luckily we have le. A fantas c touring holiday travelling around 5000km.
