3 President s Report Page 3 First I welcome the commi2ee for 2017, Gary Fuchs, Peter Kla2, Maryann Kennedy, Gavin Lill, Chris0ne Parkinson & back on the commi2ee Judy Palmer who will hold the posi0on as Club Liaison Officer. The last month has been very quiet on the roads due the wet weather. The only event was a small group from our branch traveled down to Mi2agong for the weekend to celebrate the Wollindilly Wanders 30 year anniversary, a big achievement for their branch. (Woy Woy Peninsula Branch is approaching 7 years in June). Looking forward to AGM in Port Macquarie in May & everybody that is considering going to 2018 AGM in South Australia we will have to look at booking accommoda0on very soon! Let Judy or myself know if you are interested. Looking for the Sun & Dry Roads! Q Peter, Gavin, Garry, Mark Judy, Chris<ne, Maryann A really big thanks to Mike and the team at Peninsular Office Supplies for printing our Branch Newsletter. 4 Secretary s Report Mar 2017 Hi all Page 4 Well it has been a quite month with a number of our rides cancelled. A number of us a2ended the Wanderer's 30 year reunion. The club had put a lot of effort into the event but unfortunately it was marred by rain. They did however provide us with a car your of the history of Mi2agong which was quite interes0ng. The dinner on Saturday evening was also enjoyable. With the AGM out of the way the commi2ee is looking at a number of changes to mee0ngs especially formats to make them more enjoyable. Maybe you have a few ideas, by all means let us know. Then commi2ee also approved the forma0on of a Club Liaison Officer. This role has been filled by Judy who will provide a brief of the new role. See you Friday night The Colonel Call Lois Jones Shop 9 Umina Mall Ocean Beach Rd

5 Wollondilly Wanderers Ride (Sort of) Page 5 Fri 17/3/17 saw 11 of our members head from different corners of the state to Mi2agong for the Wollondilly Wanderers (Mi2agong) Ulysses 30th anniversary celebra0ons. Grey skies and morning rain were the order of the day but we all gathered at Mi2agong Caravan Park. We all drove cars or RV's due to the bad weather. We went and registered and were greeted by some very happy Wollondilly Wanderer Ulyssians, full of informa0on about planned rides (weather permiong), dinner for Saturday night. We received magazines, patches and badges commemora0ng their anniversary. Dinner at the RSL and then drinks con0nued in Judy's cabin. Light rain for the evening and quite cool. Sat 18/3/17 saw more showers and a cool 18c but we all met up with the Wanderers at Mi2agong RSL where due to the rain there were only about 5 riders. They kindly bought their cars to transport those visi0ng, around the area without transport. We were treated to lovely morning tours with personal tour directors and a history lesson at the Gibraltar Lookout (known as the Gib) where their former President 'Lucky' gave us all an informa0ve talk about Mi2agong and the commencement of the Steel Works. With further rain on and off we headed to the 'Eden Brewery' and enjoyed a gourmet pie and a taste or two of a few beers. Very enjoyable. Then off to the Katoomba Lookout (which is so called because you can see Katoomba on a clear day). There was quite a rough walk to bush to the Lookout and Sue decided to do a bit of that on her backside! (But she was OK). The 30th anniversary dinner was at Mi2agong RSL and a lot of work had been put into making it a lovely event with great memorabilia, decora0ons, MC and meal. A party atmosphere ensued and then music and a band and an enjoyable night. Sunday saw it pouring s0ll so a few of us decided to cut our stay short and come home a day early. Some remained to head off for further travels the next day. All home safe and sound. Judy Palmer (aka Mousie) More Pics from Wollondilly Weekend Page 10 and on our website of course

6 Kosciuszko Ride Page 6 By Alan Flores With a height of 2,228 metres above sea level, Mt Kosciuszko is the highest mountain in Australia. Various measurements of the peak showed it to be slightly lower than its neighbour, Mount Townsend. The names of the mountains were swapped by the New South Wales Lands Department, so that Mount Kosciuszko remains the name of the highest peak of Australia, and Mount Townsend ranks as second. In the Snowy Mountains there is a road to Charlo2e Pass, from which an 8-kilometre path leads to the summit of Kosciuszko. Un0l 1977 it was possible to drive through Rawson Pass to within a few metres of the summit. It was 1966 and I had just traded my black 100cc twin two stroke Yamaha with 9.5 hp and a top speed of 100km/ h, for a new HONDA CL 250 Scrambler which had a red over white tank based on the then Triumph Scrambler. ARer the 100cc Yamaha I thought I had one powerful bike with 22 horsepower and a top speed of 144 kms per hour. Mind you that was with the wind behind you and going down a steep hill. I was in my second year at University of New South Wales and a group of us had formed the UNSW Motorcycle Club, which s0ll exists. One of the members, Jim, who lived near me had an enormous bike, a Honda CB 450 twin. This was the first big Honda motorcycle with a 444cc straight twin, dual overhead cam engine producing 45 horsepower. Being typical young males in the late six0es Jim and I decided we would ride to the top of Australia the following weekend. There was no motorway in those days. It was an hour to Campbelltown, two more to Goulburn, another one and a half to Canberra and then another three to Jindabyne. A total of seven hours without breaks. But because we were young at heart we s0ll decided to do it in a day but via Bega. We made no specific plans just that we would meet the following Saturday morning early at Blakehurst. We took sleeping bags, some canvas for a tent and that was it. Simple. We did not have the internet let alone a mobile phone. So we had no idea how cold it might get or if it would rain. Saturday morning we met at 7am and headed off on a nice sunny summer day. We decided that we would take the Princess Highway down the coast to Wollongong then Nowra, Bateman s Bay for lunch and finally Bega. Going through Moruya I was pulled over by a cop and charged with doing five miles over the town limit of 30 miles an hour. I told him I was accelera0ng to pass another car, which I was, but he had none of it. If you want to come back to Moruya and plead your case, he said, Feel free mind you, you will lose more in pay than the fine. We carried on. If Jim had told me then that although I was studying Psychology I would be the Public Librarian at Bega within ten years I would have not believed him, yet I was. We reached Bega late in the arernoon as in those days the Princess Highway was a winding two lane road with slow trucks and buses. ARer a short break at Bega (eleva0on 83 metre) we started for the top of the mountain. Although the weather at water level was fine we had been told it was blowing a gale at the top of the mountain. The ride up to was fine but then we had to climb Brown Mountain. A li2le steep for my bike, but soon we were

7 Kosciuszko Ride Con<nued Page 7 riding the nice wide corners into Cooma. Unless of course there was a wind gust and then we were riding in the wrong lane. We followed the Snowy Mountains Highway to the Monaro Highway to Cooma. (Eleva0on 807 metres). We filled up at Cooma then took the road to Coolringdon. ARer a stretch in town we took the Kosciuszko Road to Jindabyne. (Eleva0on 902 metres). We had travelled 572 kms in twelve hours. Being smaller bikes we took copious breaks to stretch and eat and drink. Although the breathalyser had not yet been introduced it was not a very long pub crawl. We stayed at the Jindabyne Caravan Park and ate in town at the pub..many beers later we walked back to the caravan park and we stretched the canvas between the two bikes and snug in our sleeping bags and with our sleeping bag covers stuffed with clothes as pillows we went to sleep. We woke to frost on the grass and our canvas, it was cold, bloody cold but we were young and we were on a mission to ride to the top of Australia. We washed and changed, warmed ourselves up and then fired up our steads for the word had passed around that the colt from Old Regret had got away. In warming up the bikes we no0ced some coughing, and Jim being the engineer reckoned the air was thinner here and we should reset the carbs to compensate, no fuel injec0on then. We then took the Kosciuszko Road to Smiggins Holes (eleva0on 1687 metres). We kept going through Charlo2es Pass. (1764 metres). In the next few minutes we were to climb another 500 metres. We did not stop. It was bi2erly cold and foggy. We edged our way out of the Pass and through breaks in the fog we could see a sunny day and Australia beneath us. There was nothing higher than us and being alone we were the highest men in Australia at that 0me on that day on those bikes. We ler Charlo2es Pass and drove the short distance to the top of the mountain. We were all alone, it was 7am. We had made it. We stood on top, enjoyed the view then turned our steads back to Jindabyne for breakfast. We ler the mountain and the fog began to clear, we rode through Jindabyne, onwards through to Cooma for breakfast. Soon we rode through to Queanbeyan, then took the back road following the railroad tracks to Goulburn. We kept one eye on the road and one out for the cops. They loved a good chase. In those days they had to follow you for one mile at a high speed to be able to book you. They were either in Mini Cooper S or a Honda 750 Four. It was now noon and 0me for a long lunch. We wanted to get to Sydney before the Sunday arernoon bumper to bumper queues started. We soon got to Mi2agong and took the back road to Picton again following the old rail line. Over the Razorback, through Camden then Campbelltown, Liverpool and home. 487 kilometres in nine hours. The bikes never missed a beat. My mum asked where did I go and I just said, To the top of Australia, and she said Oh, that s nice.
