President s Report Page 3 Hi all members & guests, The year has started with some very hot days, which has made riding our bikes a li2le unpleasant! But it will cool down soon which will get more bums on bikes. Our Australia Day Ride & breakfast BBQ was a great morning with big turn out of members ea0ng Egg & Bacon sandwiches enjoying the view across Brisbane Waters. A reminder to all members this Friday is our Social mee0ng followed by the AGM. You must bring your valid Ulysses membership card to a2end. Also make a note that our March Social mee0ng will be on the Friday 24 th March ( week later than normal) due to the large number of members going to Mi2agong for the Ulysses Wollondilly Wanders Anniversary weekend. Stay Healthy, Stay on Two Wheels Q #61963 A really big thanks to Mike and the team at Peninsular Office Supplies for printing our Branch Newsletter. FREE LOANER CAR 10 % DISCOUNT FOR ULYSSES MEMBERS

Secretary s Report Jan 2017 Hi all Page 4 Well we have now come around another year and another AGM. I will say that I, personally, find it a li2le disappoin0ng at the number of nomina0ons for posi0ons, but it is what it is. I have enjoyed my 0me to date and encourage you to step up and have a go. It is not onerous, does not consume huge amounts of 0me and I find enjoyable. I do not believe the role of the office bearers or commi2ee is there to do all the work. The role of the commi2ee is to provide the means for the members to do what it is they want to do. Another successful social event, being the lawn bowls, was a success with 12 bowlers and a number of spectators. It was hot but the fun negated the discomfort of the heat. Thanks Maryanne for organising but unfortunately from what I saw there will not be any highlights on Jack High. There is a process for submikng postal votes for the Ulysses AGM. If you wish to do so let me know and will provide the info received from NatComm. A number of enjoyable rides but I will say the "ride with the Tigers" had to be one of the ho2est rides home I have experienced. The day itself was Enjoyable with Chris0ne gekng a run in one of the planes. See the ride report but I think all enjoyed the day. Anyway the AGM is the next mee0ng. Make sure you bring your Ulysses membership card and that you are a current member to be able to vote. Al. Other par0cipants will be asked to leave the mee0ng space while the AGM is conducted and will re-join the mee0ng one the AGM is concluded. See you this Friday The colonel -- Regards Garry Call Lois Jones Shop 9 Umina Mall Ocean Beach Rd

Austraila Day BBQ Breakfast Ride Page 5 The ride distance might have been a little shorter than the 100km published in the calendar, but the short run up to Somersby Falls provided the perfect backdrop for our traditional Australia Day group photo and rendition of the national anthem. The ride is, of course, designed to give our master chefs one hour of breathing space to work their magic. Riders arriving at Koolewong found a mouth-watering barbecue waiting which they promptly devoured. More singing soon followed to celebrate birthdays for Monica and Mark. Thanks again to ride leader John P and master chefs Maryann, Mark, Max and Peter.

Page 6 Lunch with the Tigers February 4, 2017 Tigers are elusive creatures, but recent reports of sigh0ngs in the Hunter Valley inspired twenty-five members and friends to seek them out. Heading north up the freeway, light showers washed away any sign of 0ger tracks but provided welcome relief from the increasing heat. A half hour drink stop at Freemans and we were away again. Rolling into 0ger territory, we soon heard the dis0nc0ve throaty rumbling of nearby 0gers. Within the next minute, we saw several circling us. Chris0ne quickly made friends with one of the magnificent beasts and was carried off for a tour of the local area. The 0gers, not exactly energe0c during the heat of the Australian summer, soon withdrew to rest in the shade. Who could blame them? They stayed there for the asernoon, quite happy to be admired and stroked. Tigers are (of course) carnivorous. They know a thing or two about meat. The steak sandwich lunch rated 11 out of 10 as it melted in my mouth and quickly vanished. What is it about the Hunter Valley? The steaks and burgers are superb! A great day out. Another visit to 0ger territory may be scheduled for a cooler 0me when the 0gers are more ac0ve. Gav Lill #65483

Barefoot Bowls Page 8 On a warm Thursday night at the Woy Woy Spor0es (Bowling Club) a con0ngent (13 players plus some spectators) of Ulysses Club Members enjoyed a couple of ends of Barefoot Bowls. ASer a confusing start, some instruc0ons like the small circle on the bowl to the inside if you want to bowls the ball to the right and get it to curve to the les!@#4. Or was that big circle? Some prac0ce balls sort of cleared that up. Then a lot of balls ended up in the gu2er (people used to Ten Pin Bowling?). Some kept score others did not, some had great shots others caused the opposi0on to get 3 shots extra, that s the nature of this game. ASer 6 or 7 ends the call was made to end it and have dinner. Great night and as Gavin said on the Facebook page All were winners we par0cipated. Thanks to Maryann for arranging the night. Peter Kla2

My first Long Bike Ride - Darwin to Sydney via Townsville June 1972 Page 9 ASer winning the only significant lo2ery in my life (Na0onal Service) and aser basic training and Corps training I wangled a pos0ng to Darwin. Larrakeyah Barracks is posi0oned on a headland just on the edge of Darwin and was shared with the Navy. The army in its wisdom decided they did not need metallurgists so they trained me as a steward and I got to serve officers at their restaurant (known as a mess) and as a bar Stewart. Working odd hours such as 6am to 9pm got me off sentry duty and any marches etc. Working an 11 day fortnight also got me 3 days off every other weekend. Two others shared the same days off and we bought trail bikes, fishing rods and blasted around the countryside, osen armed only with K ra0ons and an esky or two of beer. Those days it was nothing to ride down the track doing a pub crawl to the favourite camping area which was known and UDP falls (now made famous by Crocodile Dundee). Kakadu did not exist, we ventured to the border of Ahrnhem land through creeks and never saw a crocodile, most of them had been hunted out of existence. We helped a survey vehicle that was surveying the Ranger uranium mine and frequently swam in the hole les by mining in the rum jungle. It was a carefree 0me with li2le to but work, drink and frequently go fishing. The locals laughed at me when I turned up with a small fishing rod and a 12 lb line. Bought some bigger gear aser mul0ple bust-offs. On high 0de 5-7 meters, it was possible to fish from the rocks at the end of the barracks. All it needed was bait (chicken) and I brought back massive mackerel or tuna etc. These were expertly cooked by the cooks in the OR s mess and distributed to friends at lunch 0me. Television only came to Darwin on the13 August: 1970, ABD-6 launches as Darwin's first television sta0on. So I hired a B&W TV from radio rentals and we watched sesame street aser work in our barracks. In early 1971 we had the first milk delivered to Darwin, it was long life milk in Tetra packs, but it tasted sooo much be2er than powdered milk. Several worn out bikes later, a 125 Suzuki and a 250 Suzuki trail bike and star0ng to plan the trip back to Wollongong, I bought at Suzuki 380 CC triple air cooled two stroke that now had oil injec0on Wow. Thanks to Gough Whitlam my stay in Darwin was cut short by 6 months so the trip was ON. The Army paid the equivalent of an air 0cket home so that helped with fuel and food, accommoda0on was usually a two man pup tent. Off I went on a great adventure, had to pack fuel as well as the bike chewed through fuel, especially when going 70 miles per hr plus and the lack of fuel sta0ons between Tenant creek and Mount Isa. If you look at the photos you will note a big box on the back of the bike, it held my portable tape player, no Walkman s on those days. But it did the job playing up to 8 hrs of music, usually recorded from radio shows. The days when you s0ll had to have numberplates on the front of the bike. 10 COMING EVENTS 17th, 18th and 19th March 2017 Wollondilly Wanderers Weekend Page 10 At Tennant Creek someone raided my tent and stole my camera and other stuff, no shopping 0ll Mount Isa (and no photos). The road to Townsville was s0ll dirt and flooded, with only trucks allowed through, so I hitched a ride on a freight train with the bike. The freight train had a mail car which was empty, so the bike (sans oil and fuel) was loaded in there. I was the only passenger for three days, living off supplies, camping in the passenger car, sleeping with my 0cket a2ached to my collar. Finally aser 24 hrs the train seemed to be stopped, and I was able to get off and get some food from a small town, hurry up as the train was not staying long. Finally arrived at Townsville, I found the bike was buried under tonnes of mail that had to come out first. Then had to wheel the bike to a safe spot and hike to the petrol sta0on for fuel and oil. Eventually found the campground and spent the night. 1Townsville from the mountain 2 heading South through the Tropic Because the train trip delayed my trip I was in a hurry so decided to travel the New England HWY. Big Mistake, it was June and having acclima- 0sed with tropical blood the ride through the New England Hwy with ice and fog was a miserable. One day I only travelled 50 Km before I had to give up, newspapers down my jacket front and plain leather gloves don t make the grade when it is - 4 C and foggy all day. Passing through Newcastle I was briefly escorted by a bunch of real bikies (Hells Angels) who saw the NT numberplate and gave me a thumbs up. Blue with cold I turned up at my Brothers place in Wollongong, safe and somewhat elated. Just another couple of days in Sydney Army Barracks for discharge and I was a free man again. 12 Riding in Hot weather Page 12 Tar Snakes Tar snakes are a hazard for both motorized and pedaled two-wheeled vehicles and their riders. Many states use a tar-like material to fill in cracks on the roads; these can become quite slippery when it s hot. Avoid them if possible. Treat them the same as railroad tracks by crossing them at 90 degrees and in an upright posi0on. Slow down if your rear 0re starts sliding out from under you stay calm and the 0re will grip again. Don t try to over-correct, keep your line, keep your head up, grip lightly, and keep your body steady for when the gripping ac0on returns. If there s a large patch of tar snakes and there is no way to avoid them all, I will some0mes pull in the clutch and treat the obstacle as I would a large patch of ice, coast through it, and aser ensuring that the rear wheel is clear, reengage the engine. This helps to keep from slipping. Suzuki GS500 seeks novice to nurture January 03, 2017 manufactured 2007 odometer 79,470 km regularly serviced and maintained brand new Pirelli tyres nothing for a new owner to do (just jump on and ride) registered SFN80 to July 2017 price $3,000 This bike has done a fantastic job of looking after me through my L and P plates. It has always started easily, never missed a beat and never given me a scary moment. I would like to see it do the same for another learner coming through.
