1 AUGUST 2018 NEWSLETTER September Meeting - 6:45 PM - Tuesday, September 11, 2018 Chippewa Valley Museum, Eau Claire, WI August Update August has been a busy month so far. Two major goals have been achieved this month. The Crown boiler has been sold. It will be shipped to David Powell in Virginia. The Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association has completed the re-roofing of the roundhouse at the time of this newsletter. August 16th. We hosted over 150 students from Locust Lane and Longfellow Elementary Schools to train Locust Lane and Longfellow Elementary Schools Train Day Paul and Margaret Almquist introduced the students to rail safety with their great Operation Life Saver presentation. All listened quietly. Life Saver hats were giving to all students before they rode the train. Picture by Dave Peterson PAGE 1
2 CHIPPEWA VALLEY RAILROAD Dr Brown Lecture Series Marc Brown greeted the students and then split them into two groups of about 45. One group rode the train while the others were given railroad safety tips and a turntable demonstration. He also explained the operation of steam locomotives. Many had never seen a steam locomotive. For many, the train ride on the CVRR was their first train ride. Train ride Frank Garber and Al Brun were our engineers for the day. Between the two schools we made eight train runs. PAGE 2
3 Roundhouse Re-roof August 20-22, 2018 Roundhouse Re-roof Work began on the back roof and continued to the front over 2 1/2 days. Crew sized varied between 4 to 7 Home Builders volunteers plus CVRR supervising members. The upper right picture shows the modification to one of the valley flashings that was the source of the major leaks. To the left is the final crew after completion Wednesday. Roundhouse Complete August 22, 2018 The new roof looks great and will service us for some time. We will add soffits to the front and rear. They will be constructed to support new gutters. We will be asking for volunteers to complete them. Thanks to Byron Bobb, Marc Brown, Al Brun, and Dave Peterson for supervising the project. PAGE 3
