Mike.. Life is a journey filled with opportunities and experiences. As Catholics we are uniquely privileged because our journey is one which involves our loving God who not only walks with us but at times carries us through our difficulties. As a priest for the past 22 years, my journey has taken me to encounter God in many different communities and circumstances. During these past two years at La Purisima Concepcion I have had the unique opportunity see God working in the lives of this Catholic community. I consider myself blessed to have had the opportunity to minister here. Not only have I seen God working in your lives, I have also seen God working in my life through this pastoral experience. For this I am eternally grateful. Though it may appear this journey is taking us on different paths, in reality we are on the same path. We are on a journey of faith with a God who loves us unconditionally. So let us continue to pray for one another as we move forward on our journey of faith. I ask you to pray for my new ministry at Bishop Alemany High School (Mission Hills). Pray for the students that they may be open to a relationship Jesus. The Catholic Daughters are the largest National organizations of Catholic women in the world dedicated to strenghtening their spiritual life through Christ and His Church and are dedicated to the principles of Unity & Charity. They were founded in Utica, New York in Certificates of Achievements were awarded to local contest winners: Anya Gallardo, Constantine Hall, Nathan Edwards, Gabriel Adams, Diego Torres, Raphael Adams, Mia Carrillo, Thomas Apolinario, Natalie Escobedo, Julia Adam& Gabriela Huizar. Ther first place winners in each catagery were sent to State. Anya Gallardo will now go on to National. Rita Adams, Vice President of local court also presented the school with a $3,500 check from the fundraiser Tea held in April. The local court also supports the Bridge House, Community Kitchen (feeding the homeless every Friday), Relief Emergency Fund and numerous local, state & national charities. Guatemala Disaster Collection July 7 th & July 8 th On June 3, 2018 devastation struck just 30 miles southwest of Guatemala City when the Volcán de Fuego erupted resulting in approximately 114 deaths, 200 missing persons and close to 3 thousand displaced persons from destroyed homes. The volcano is generating currents of hot gas of 1,000 degrees in temperature that are fast flowing and reaching speeds of up to 430 mph. On top of these terrifying statistics, the volcano has been producing gas and ash eruptions, which make search and rescue efforts extremely dangerous. During this time, Guatemala is in solemn need of our prayers and support as they face such devastating loss within their community. In solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters, Archbishop Gomez has asked all parishes to consider conducting a non-mandatory special collection during the weekend 7th and 8th of July, All checks should be made payable to The Society for the Propagation of the Faith- memo: Guatemala Disaster. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battlefield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battlefield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. La vida es como un viaje lleno de oportunidades y experiencias. Como católicos somos privilegiados porque nuestro camino es uno que involucra a nuestro Dios amoroso que no sólo camina con nosotros sino que a veces nos lleva a través de nuestras dificultades. Como sacerdote durante los últimos 22 años, mi viaje me ha llevado a encontrarme con Dios en muchas comunidades y circunstancias diferentes. Durante estos dos últimos años en La Purísima Concepción he tenido la oportunidad de ver a Dios trabajando en las vidas de esta comunidad católica. Me considero bendecido por haber tenido la oportunidad de administrar aquí. No sólo he visto a Dios trabajando en sus vidas, sino que también en mi vida a través de esta experiencia pastoral. Por esto estoy eternamente agradecido. Aunque parezca que este viaje nos lleva por caminos diferentes, en realidad estamos en un mismo camino. Estamos en un viaje de fe con un Dios que nos ama incondicionalmente. Así que continuemos orando unos por otros mientras avanzamos en nuestro camino de fe. El 3 de junio de 2018, la devastación azotó sólo 30 millas al suroeste de la Ciudad de Guatemala cuando el Volcán de Fuego entró en erupción, resultando en aproximadamente 114 muertes, 200 personas desaparecidas y cerca de 3 mil personas desplazadas de sus hogares destruidos. El volcán está generando corrientes de gas caliente de grados de temperatura que fluyen rápidamente y alcanzan velocidades de hasta 430 mph. Además de estos aterradores datos estadísticos, el volcán ha estado produciendo erupciones de gas y ceniza, lo que hace que los esfuerzos de búsqueda y rescate sean extremadamente peligrosos. Durante este tiempo, Guatemala está en la necesidad solemne de nuestras oraciones y apoyo, ya que se enfrentan a una pérdida tan devastadora dentro de su comunidad. Todos encontraron obstáculos en su ministerio. Ezequiel fue llamado para que profetizara a los israelitas, convertidos en un pueblo rebelde (Ezequiel 2:4). San Pablo relata cómo se le ha metido una espina clavada en mi carne (2 Corintios 12:7). El Señor Jesús no puede realizar demasiados milagros en su tierra natal. El Evangelio nos dice que estaba extrañado de la incredulidad de aquella gente (Marcos 6:6). Nosotros, también, algunas veces nos topamos con obstáculos al transitar el camino de la fe. Muchas veces en nuestro viaje nos sentimos débiles. Que las palabras del Señor a san Pablo nos animen hoy: Te basta mi gracia, porque mi poder se manifiesta en la debilidad (2 Corintios 12:9).
